Chipotle Mexican Grill, Inc. CMG is the healthy alternative to McDonald's Corporation MCD's processed, calorie-heavy meals. Right?
If you are reading this from Chipotle, chomping on a guacamole-laden bite while thinking your chicken fajita lunch is clearly a healthier choice compared to a Big Mac combo, than you may need to rethink your eating habits — at least according to a new study from the University of South Carolina.
According to Delish.com, the university's study showed fast-casual chains like Chipotle and Panera Bread Co PNRA are serving consumers entrees that could have up to 35 percent more calories than a meal at McDonald's or even Yum! Brands, Inc. YUM's Taco Bell franchise.
On average, fast-casual meals contain 760 calories compared to fast-food meals, which contain 561 calories on average. Fast-casual restaurants often use nutrient-dense but higher calorie ingredients such as whole grains, olive oil and fats from nuts and fish.
Chipotle fans who opt for a scoop of guacamole with chips or sour cream should be aware that these add-ons naturally increase caloric intake. However, the option of customizing a meal does give consumers the flexibility to avoid extra calories.
As noted by Delish.com, Chipotle could tout itself as the healthier option because consumers "have the option to make smarter choice." However, consumers "probably don't, because seriously, what's a burrito without guac?"
