Microsoft Corp. MSFT agreed to acquire a "big data" mining software company Revolution Analytics for undisclosed terms.
Revolution spin-off out of Yale University's computer science in 2007, and has focused on developing the open-source analystics software called R which counts more than 2 million users worldwide, according to Microsoft.
Revolution customers include large financial services organizations as well as pharmaceutical, manufacturing and technology companies.
"Microsoft might seem like a strange bedfellow for an open-source company," Revolution's David Smith said in statement.
But Smith said Microsoft has embraced Linux on its Azure cloud service and contributed to open source projects including Chef, Puppet, Docker, MongoDB, Redis and OpenJDK.
