On Wednesday, Colorado's marijuana community cheered the state's
one-day tax holiday
on cannabis goods. A loophole in the state's tax laws allowed the government to lift its 10 percent tax on marijuana goods for one day, drawing customers to Colorado's dispensaries in droves. The day was celebrated by the community as "Christmas for Pot" and many compared the long lines and eager shoppers to those seen on Black Friday.
Consumers Stock Up
Between lower taxes and dispensaries' sales, consumers were able to bulk up their marijuana stockpiles for cheaper than ever before. Dispensaries like the Denver-based Grass Station gave shoppers up to 50 percent off in addition to the tax break to celebrate the holiday.
Growers Benefit
Pot users weren't the only ones to benefit from Green Wednesday, growers were feeling the boost as well. Growers were also exempt from the 15 percent tax they must pay to the government for all sales made to dispensaries, so the holiday represented a big day for them as well. Most dispensaries ordered in extra large shipments to cope with increased demand on Wednesday, so growers were able to fill huge orders without any tax burden.
Worries About Repercussions
While many laughed off Colorado's marijuana holiday as a part of the state's quirky culture, others worried that encouraging people to buy large amounts of marijuana could send a dangerous message. Many said that such holidays will encourage overconsumption and that people keeping such large amounts of cannabis in their homes will undoubtedly make it more available to underage users.
