ChatGPT Creator Sam Altman Wishes More People Were Studying This Course Before Climate Crisis 'Gets Bad Enough'

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently shared his thoughts on a topic of increasing importance that could mitigate the effects of climate change

What Happened: In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Altman, who co-created ChatGPT, expressed his wish for more research into solar geoengineering.

He admitted to having some reservations about it but pointed out that its relatively low cost could tempt a country to implement it as a temporary solution when the climate crisis worsens.

“I wish the world were studying solar geoengineering more,” Altman wrote. “Clearly have misgivings about it, but it’s so relatively cheap that i think some country is just going to do it if/when the climate crisis gets bad enough as a temporary patch.”

Altman emphasized the importance of learning more about this technology before the need for it becomes urgent.

Why It Matters: Solar geoengineering involves various techniques aimed at reflecting harmful solar radiation back into space. One approach is to position sun shields in space to deflect sunlight, reducing the amount of heat that reaches Earth.

Popular proponents of solar geoengineering include big names like Bill GatesGeorge Soros, and Jeff Bezos. Gates even backed a Harvard University experiment to gauge the effect of spraying particles in the atmosphere to cool the globe. However, there is a lot of resistance to the concept with some slamming it as a “quick fix.”
