Dominique Strauss-Kahn Destined For Prison Or Obscurity

IMF head Dominique Strauss-Kahn has been accused of attempting to rape a New York City hotel worker. He is denying it but, if he did emerge from his suite's bathroom naked and try to force himself on a maid, as is being claimed, then it is the worst possible way to try to get elected for President and his bid is surely over. Undoubtedly, he hires some top-notch PR personnel, but there is absolutely no way to “spin” rape. Of course, he's innocent until proven guilty and, rather meekly, his wife has stepped forward to defend him despite the fact that he has cheated on her with a coworker before. Cheating is a very different thing to rape and, while Strauss-Kahn is very obviously no angel, there are some serious moral boundaries that need to be demolished before a person is capable of a monstrous act such as that which the Presidential candidate is accused of. The truth is that, guilty or innocent, charges like this stick. A word like “rape” sticks in the voter's mind and, even if found innocent, an element of doubt always remains. Words like “racist”, “murder”, “wife beater” and “pedophile” have the exact same effect. So, if Strauss-Kahn is innocent, he should prepare for some unjust hard times ahead, and he should look for alternative employment ideas because he won't be President. If he's guilty as charged, we can only hope that he's appropriately punished and the maid is able to recover and live a healthy life.
