The Volkswagen Jetta was redesigned for the 2011 model year. Since then, it has become a paragon of style, value and versatility, offering customers a choice of four different engines, each suited to a particular driving style and budget.

Now, the latest Jetta will join the family: The Hybrid.

When it reaches Canadian dealerships this winter, the Jetta Hybrid will become the world's first turbocharged car equipped with an electric hybrid drive. For the first time, the words "fun" and "hybrid" will be used to describe a single car.

By way of proof, the Jetta Hybrid has already set two world speed records on the flats of the Bonneville Speedway in Utah, showing that frugality and power can co-exist under the same hood. In production trim, the car will accelerate from zero to sixty miles per hour in just 8.6 seconds.

The Jetta has become famous for its roominess, boasting the most spacious back seat in its class. Adding to the sleek, upscale look of the Jetta are further aerodynamic enhancements on the Hybrid model, making it all the more slippery. From the Hybrid-specific air intake to the rear decklid spoiler, the look is all business and is borne out in a Drag Coefficient of just 0.28.

Inside, the most noticeable difference with the hybrid model comes on the dashboard, where specially-designed gauges have been engineered to provide the driver with all of the data necessary to promote the most efficient manner of driving possible. The Jetta Hybrid's "Power Meter" replaces the traditional tachometer and shows the driver's present-state level of driving efficiency.

Further information is provided by the car's "ePower meter", also located within the instrument cluster, and the main radio/navigation screen, which can also display the drive condition.

The real star of the show, of course, is the powertrain.

Combining the 1.4L turbocharged four-cylinder engine with a 27 hp electric motor is what defines the car as a hybrid. The result is an elegant balance of power, efficiency and cleanliness. The direct-injected engine is not only compact and lightweight, but extremely powerful, producing a total of 150 hp. The electric drive is powered by a compact battery pack that features high-tech cooling to ensure safety, efficiency and reliability.

All of the power is routed through a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox (DSG). Fans of Volkswagen's GTI and TDI models will be familiar with this type of transmission, which combines the quick shifting and fuel economy of a manual, with the ease and convenience of an automatic.

From startup, the Jetta Hybrid can be driven in pure electric mode at speeds up to 70 km/h. In times of need, for either charging or additional power, the Jetta's gasoline engine is engaged smoothly and seamlessly by the vehicle's start-stop system. The gasoline engine provides the necessary energy to not only propel the vehicle, but also to recharge the hybrid system's battery pack. A further source of energy for the hybrid drive is the vehicle's regenerative braking system, which converts the kinetic energy of braking into electricity.

All of the characteristics that have made the Jetta one of the top selling cars in Canada have been captured by the hybrid. Handling designed and tested on the Autobahn is a given, as is the most modern of safety systems including Volkswagen's Intelligent Crash Response System which unlocks the doors, and turns on the hazard lights, as well as shutting down the fuel system in certain types of collisions.

The Jetta Hybrid will be available in three levels of trim: Trendline, Comfortline and Highline, each reflecting a level of equipment desired by Canadian car buyers.

When the newest Jetta hits showrooms, it will be the only car available with a choice of gasoline engines, a TDI Clean Diesel and the turbocharged-electric Hybrid, giving Canadian consumers an unprecedented selection of powertrains in award-winning package.

Arriving this winter, the Jetta Hybrid will be priced from $27,875.
