Lower Fares Push U.S. Travel Agency Air Ticket Sales Down 4.3 Percent in 2016 vs. 2015

ARLINGTON, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Airlines Reporting Corp. (ARC), the financial settlement link between airlines and travel sellers, reported today that the consolidated dollar value of airline tickets sold by U.S.-based travel agencies decreased 4.3 percent* in the first four months of 2016, compared to 2015, totaling $30.9 billion vs. $32.3 billion. April 2016 ticket sales were down 6.8 percent to $7.7 billion against the same month last year. Meanwhile, ticket transactions increased 4.6 percent to 57.6 million through April 2016 vs. the same period in 2015, suggesting a noticeable impact of lower airfares.

Electronic Miscellaneous Document (EMD)** sales comprised $11.4 million of the year-to-date sales vs. $4.1 million in 2015 and $3.1 million of the April 2016 sales compared to $1 million in April 2015. EMD transactions increased to 140 thousand so far in 2016 vs. 33 thousand in 2015.
