Exclusive Survey In Woman's Day Magazine Reveals 96% Of Women Have Experienced Anxiety; Finances Cited As The #1 Cause

PR Newswire

RED BANK, N.J., Aug. 14, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Woman's Day magazine today announced the results of an exclusive survey with HealthyWomen, the nation's leading independent, nonprofit health information source for women, revealing women's attitudes toward anxiety, including what triggers their anxiety and how they manage it. The results appear in the September 2018 issue of Woman's Dayonline and on newsstands August 14.

According to the survey of more than 1,000 women, 96 percent have experienced some level of anxiety, with 81 percent suffering from it at least weekly. Those surveyed also cited age as a factor in their anxiety, revealing they have experienced more anxiety in their 40s, 50s and 60s than they did in their 20s and 30s.

Fifty-two percent of respondents cited their finances as the number one trigger of their anxiety, followed by situations at work (44%) and the relationship with their significant other (35%).

"We've been hearing more and more from our readers about the impact anxiety has on their lives and how difficult it is to manage," says Susan Spencer, Editor in Chief, Woman's Day magazine. "The survey results confirmed that chronic worry is something our readers are dealing with on a daily basis and allowed us to talk about this issue in a larger way and pinpoint the causes behind the anxiety to offer our readers strategies and solutions to help them cope."

Additional highlights from the survey include:

  • 43 percent of women have not spoken to their health care professional about their concerns, even though anxiety is so common among women. In fact, half of the women surveyed said these feelings of anxiety interfere with their daily life.
  • 61 percent of women have experienced a panic attack at some point.
  • Many women turn to coping mechanisms when they start to feel anxious. Forty-four percent of women surveyed watch TV, 41 percent turn to food, 33 percent avoid social situations and 33 percent exercise.
  • 87 percent of the women surveyed have already gone through menopause or are currently perimenopausal, and 80 percent believe that menopause can cause anxiety.

"Although we all experience anxiety from time to time—between work, families and everyday stressful situations—women today are facing many pressures, which can lead to the overwhelming feeling of helplessness," says Beth Battaglino, RN, CEO of HealthyWomen. "Everyone is different, so it is critical to recognize and understand your own signs of anxiety, and then learn healthy ways to manage them that make sense for your individual lifestyles. The results from this survey prove that you are not alone, and it's important to talk about the anxiety you are experiencing, with both loved ones and health care professionals."
