The Sundance Kid hasn’t ridden off into the sunset yet, but at the rate acting legend Robert Redford is divesting his real estate portfolio, he seems intent on lightening his load. The latest of his homes listed is his cozy retreat on the Tiburon Peninsula north of San Francisco, which just hit the market for $4.15 million.
A Short-Lived Ownership
The wood-shingled property was built in 1968 and is nestled among tall redwoods overlooking the bay, Keil Cove, and Angel Island. Redford and his wife, artist Sibylle Szaggars Redford, haven’t owned the place for long. According to the Wall Street Journal, which broke the story, they paid $3.1 million for the four-bedroom, roughly 2,824-square-foot residence in 2020.

The listing represents a flip of sorts for the couple, who embarked on some cosmetic changes to brighten things up, give it a coastal feel, and add terraces and gardens.
“We love Mediterranean gardens,” they said in an email to the WSJ, “and Tiburon’s climate is perfect for plants like lavender, jasmine and succulents, all water-wise plants which now grace the outdoor spaces around the home.”
A Steady Divestment Of Their Real Estate Holdings
The sale seems to be due because the couple cannot spend much time on the property. They live primarily in Santa Fe, N.M., where Sibylle has an art gallery. They also have homes in California and Utah, the latter hosting the annual Sundance Film Festival that Redford founded.

The couple still own homes in California and Utah and has been steadily divesting their real estate holdings in recent years. In 2019, they sold a 10-acre Napa Valley wine country home for $7 million. In 2021, the Horse Whisperer Ranch was put on the market for $4.9 million. Earlier this year, they sold a four-bedroom Utah cabin near Sundance for $3.99 million. Szaggars Redford purchased the home in the 1980s before she met the Hollywood icon.
Dedicated Conservationists
In 2020, the Redfords sold the Sundance Mountain Resort, the Provo Canyon ski destination the actor, filmmaker, and environmental activist opened in 1969. At the time of selling the 2,600-acre resort to Broadreach Capital Partners and Cedar Capital Partners, Redford told The Salt Lake Tribune:
“I had been searching for years for the right people to take it to the next level so that I could take that weight off my shoulders and enjoy my life.”

A dedicated conservationist, Redford and his family have entered into a partnership with Utah Open Lands to permanently protect over 300 acres of pristine wildlife habitat, streams and wetlands. Located at the base of Mt. Timpanogos, the recently established Redford Family Elk Meadows Preserve includes the meadow below the iconic Stewart Falls and popular hiking and cross-country skiing trails.
A Refuge From The Spotlight
Despite the increase in the number of high-profile celebrities attracted to Utah for skiing and the film festival, Sundance has generally remained a low-key resort serving the local population from the nearby town of Provo.
Redford’s first wife was from Provo and in 1961, the actor bought two acres for $500 from the owners, a sheepherding family who ran a mom-and-pop ski operation called Timphaven. It was a refuge for Redford from Hollywood as his acting career took off.
