Hartville Pet Insurance offers two types of plans — Complete Coverage and Accident-Only.

The Complete Coverage policy is made for pet parents who want the most peace of mind from their pet insurance policy. It covers just about anything that you can think of, including accident coverage, which will take care of the costs for accident-related injuries, such as if your pet ingests a toxic substance or hurts their leg. There’s also illness coverage, which covers unexpected illnesses such as allergies and digestive issues as well as more major conditions including cancer and hypothyroidism. Hartville’s Complete Coverage policy even covers advanced treatments such as chemotherapy, stem-cell therapy and acupuncture.

Additionally, the Complete Coverage policy covers hereditary conditions and behavioral issues. The truth is that some inherited conditions or birth defects might not show symptoms until later in your pet’s life. Common inherited conditions include heart disease, eye disorders and hip dysplasia. You’ll also get coverage for vet visits related to behavioral issues such as anxiety if the condition causes your pet to engage in behaviors such as excessive licking or destructiveness.

Hartville Pet Insurance’s Accident-Only coverage is more restrictive in that it only covers vet visits that are related to new accidents and injuries. Both the Complete Coverage and Accident-Only coverage exclude cosmetic procedures, pre-existing conditions and preventative care costs.

The nice thing about Hartville Pet Insurance is that it offers coverage for dogs and cats of all ages after they turn 8 weeks old. You can also customize your coverage. However, there is no option for unlimited coverage, putting a cap on the reimbursement amount you can receive for your pet’s care.

Hartville Customer Service

Unfortunately, Hartville Pet Insurance is not represented by a lot of third-party ratings. However, Hartville’s policies are underwritten by the United States Fire Insurance Company, so information from this company’s third-party ratings indicates company strength. Keep in mind, though, that even this is not a fully accurate representation, as the United States Fire Insurance Company underwrites other pet insurance company’s policies as well.

Hartville Pet Insurance makes its customer service team available for prospective and current customers. The website does not specify the Contact Center’s hours of availability, but you can reach the customer service team by phone or email.

Current customers can also use Hartville Pet Insurance’s Member Center. The Member Center is an online tool that allows you to manage your account at your convenience. You can use it to view your policy, find vet clinics, submit and track claims and pay your bill.

Claims can be submitted online, by fax or by mail. Hartville Pet Insurance allows you to track the status of your claim in the Member Center, and the company will also send you email updates on your claim’s progress. Hartville says that it gets most claims processed in 30 days or less. On average, it takes 14 to 16 business days for Hartville to completely process a claim.

Hartville Pricing

Hartville makes it easy to get a quote for your pet in just a few clicks. But then it’s time to think about pet insurance costs.

Take a look at these quotes to see how much pet insurance policies from Hartville can cost.

PetPolicyAnnual limitReimbursementAnnual deductiblePremium
2-year-old male Labrador Retriever mix dogComplete Coverage$5,000`80%$250$48.16/mo
2-year-old male Labrador Retriever mix dogAccident-Only Coverage$5,00080%$250$24.55/mo
2-year-old female Domestic Longhair catComplete Coverage$5,000`80%$250$20.26/mo
2-year-old female Domestic Longhair catAccident-Only Coverage$5,00080%$250$14.27/mo

These pricing options are fair for the vast amount of coverage that Hartville provides. The Accident-Only policy is a good price for pet parents who want budget coverage only in the case of emergencies. The fact that you can adjust the annual limit, annual deductible and reimbursement amount of your policy is also helpful so you can find an option that fits your budget.

  • Annual limits options are $2,500, $4,000, $5,000, $7,000 and $10,000.
  • Reimbursement options are 70%, 80% and 90%.
  • Annual deductible options are $500, $250 and $100.

It’s difficult to truly compare pet insurance companies because many offer adjustable options such as this. Even so, when compared to some competitors, Hartville’s policies are less expensive for the amount of coverage that it offers. That being said, Hartville does increase premiums as your pet ages. There’s no guarantee that Hartville’s policy will remain the best deal over the lifetime of your pet.

You can opt to pay your pet insurance premium either monthly or annually. However, from these quotes, it doesn’t appear that you save any money by paying annually, so both payment options are equally good.

If you have multiple pets, you can receive a 5% discount for enrolling each pet in a pet insurance policy. It does not appear that Hartville Pet Insurance offers any other discount options, such as discounts for animal professionals or veterans.

Hartville Application Experience

Hartville’s application experience is easy and straightforward. All you have to do is get a free quote on the company’s website to get started. From there, you can customize your coverage amounts and other important factors of your policy. After you’ve submitted your application, there is a waiting period before your pet’s coverage will begin. All coverage offered by Hartville Pet Insurance starts on the 15th day after the policy effective date.

You can access the Hartville Pet Insurance app or use the Member Center to manage your policy. This feature makes it even more convenient to track your claims, review your policy and update your information as needed.

Your pet will not need to undergo a medical exam from your veterinarian to start your pet insurance policy. However, Hartville will request your pet’s medical records before it can process your pet’s first claim because it needs to review your pet’s medical history to check for pre-existing conditions that are excluded from your coverage.

Hartville vs. Competitors

Hartville Pet Insurance offers many benefits to make its policies stand out among its competition. For one thing, these pet insurance policies cover exam fees for all visits that are eligible for coverage. Many other pet insurance companies do not offer this benefit. Hartville also includes coverage for alternative therapies that may not be covered by other policies.

Hartville Overall Rating

Hartville Pet Insurance is a good option for most pet parents. It offers a wide amount of coverage with its Complete Coverage policy, including coverage for alternative therapies and behavioral issues. There’s also an Accident-Only policy for pet parents who want coverage for emergencies only. Pets are eligible for coverage from the age of 8 weeks old with no upper age limit for coverage, so even senior pet parents can use these plans.

As far as pricing goes, the quotes for Hartville’s policies show a good value for the amount of coverage they provide. However, Hartville’s policy premiums do increase as your pet ages, and the company doesn’t provide much information about how much the price could rise. Age-related price increases are standard with most pet insurance companies, but it’s important to keep in mind because you likely will not pay the same premium for more than 1 year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q

Who owns Hartville Pet Insurance?

A

Hartville Pet Insurance is offered by Crum & Forster Pet Insurance Group™. This insurance group is one of the original pet insurance providers and also partners with the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals® (ASPCA®) for pet insurance policies.

Q

Can you be denied pet insurance?

A

With companies like Hartville Pet Insurance, as long as your pet falls within the covered species and age ranges, you shouldn’t be denied the ability to purchase a pet insurance policy. But that doesn’t mean that there isn’t the possibility of a claim being denied in the future. The fact is that insurance companies deny all sorts of insurance claims.

The biggest risk with pet insurance is that the pet insurance company may deny a claim if it believes that your pet’s medical records show that the visit you’re seeking coverage for was from a pre-existing condition. Pet insurance companies may consider something a pre-existing condition even if your pet has never been diagnosed with a condition. For example, if your newly adopted pet had an upper respiratory infection when you adopted it and you sought treatment for it, that’s in your pet’s medical records. If your pet experiences respiratory symptoms a few years later and you try to submit a claim to your pet insurance company for it, it could be denied because your pet has shown symptoms of respiratory issues in the past.

Your pet insurance company can also deny a claim for a condition that started during the policy’s waiting period. That’s why it’s important to purchase pet insurance before your pet starts experiencing medical issues. If you purchase pet insurance because your pet is showing symptoms and you want to bring him or her to the vet in the next few days, it won’t do you any good because you’ll still be within the policy’s waiting period.
