Is the Stock Market Closed Today?
The stock market is closed on federal and religious holidays, often the same holidays that banks take off. These non-weekend market holidays are days of the week where the New York Stock Exchange, Nasdaq and bond markets are closed for the day. Sometimes the stock market remains open on days where the bond market is closed.
If a given holiday happens to take place on a Saturday, the stock market will take that Friday off. If a holiday lands on Sunday, the stock market will often be closed the following Monday.
The day before Good Friday, the stock market holds its regular hours, but the bond markets close early at 2 p.m. Similarly, the stock market is also open the Friday before Memorial Day, while the bond markets will close early at 2 p.m. again. The same thing will happen on July 1.
Columbus Day is on a Monday in 2022, October 10. The New York Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq are both open on that holiday. The bond markets are closed that entire day. Bond traders are also off for Veterans Day, which is Friday, November 11. Like Columbus Day, stocks and Nasdaq will have regular hours.
Thanksgiving is a holiday for the stock market and Black Friday has special hours, too. The stock markets close early, at 1 p.m. on Friday November 25. The bond markets close early, too, just 1 hour after the stock markets. Christmas Eve is observed on Friday December 23 when the bond markets will close at 2 p.. but the NYSE and Nasdaq will remain open. Finally, New Year’s Eve is observed on Friday December 30. The stock markets will be open, but the bond markets will close at 2 p.m.
Is the Stock Market Open on Weekends?
Ever heard of the phrase, “Money never sleeps?” Well, apparently it does on the weekends. The stock market is closed on the weekends, much like banks. Interestingly enough, the New York Stock Exchange used to be open for a bit on Saturdays, but that stopped in 1952.
That doesn’t mean you can’t make after-hours trades in 2022, although there are a lot of risks involved. Online networks allow investors to buy and sell shares even when the market isn’t open, including weekends, but you may notice that prices are influenced by single sales due to fewer stocks being traded. This can mean increased costs. And these prices aren’t considered official during after-hours, either, since they don’t reflect the price for the stock upon reopening on Monday.
Because of this, it’s usually safer to wait until the stock market opens back up.
A safer idea might be checking out some of the best stock market simulators during this downtime. Flash some fake cash and practice some tried-and-true strategies without the risk. Just make sure the simulator you go with has resource tools and feels authentic. You want it to be as close to the real deal as possible, since you’ll be making decisions in real-time.
What Time Does the Stock Market Open?
You might be wondering when the stock market will open again on Monday. The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq are both open for trading between 9:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. EST, Monday through Friday.
Before the stock market opens, it might be a good idea to open up your stock market app. While some will let you implement real trades, the beauty of a stock market app is having news feeds and research tips at your fingertips. While you wait for the stock market to open, you can use these apps to look at the latest stock market news and updates.
Recap: When Can You Trade Stocks?
The stock market can seem like a whirlwind of numbers, charts, figures and risks. It gets your heart pumping and your eyes shifting. It’s exciting. It’s exhilarating. It’s exhausting. And that’s why the stock market needs some days off, too. While money never sleeps, stockbrokers apparently do.
The New York Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq Stock Market have 10 holidays in 2022 where they won’t be operating, including Memorial Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. They have some partial days off, too, but their hours can most often reflect that of your local bank. That means they have the weekend off, too.
But come Monday morning the madness begins again, and after checking out our guides on the stock market and investing you’ll be ready to take it all on.
