Driving a motorcycle can be a freeing experience. However, driving a motorcycle also comes with certain responsibilities and legal requirements. Read on for everything you need to know about motorcycle insurance in Oklahoma.

Oklahoma Motorcycle Insurance: An Overview

  • State minimum insurance requirements:
    • $25,000 bodily injury liability for 1 person per accident
    • $50,000 bodily injury liability for 2 or more people per accident
    • $25,000 property damage liability
  • Average annual rate with a clean driving record: $700

Oklahoma Motorcycle Insurance Law Explained

Oklahoma state law requires that you insure your motorcycle. Oklahoma state law also requires that your motorcycle insurance policy contains a minimum amount of liability coverage.

You can also purchase additional coverages or higher limits of coverage than what is required by law. Here’s an overview of the insurance coverages you should become familiar with before choosing your policy:

  • Liability insurance covers both bodily injuries and property damage that happens as a result of an accident in which you are found at fault with your motorcycle. This is what is required by Oklahoma state law, with minimum amounts of coverage for each type of liability coverage. However, liability coverage will not cover your own bodily injuries or personal damages. It also doesn’t cover bodily injuries for your passenger.
  • Medical payments, no-fault or personal injury protection coverage protects you and any passenger on your motorcycle. If you’re involved in an accident with your motorcycle, this will help pay for the medical bills that come from getting your injuries treated.
  • Motorcycle collision insurance is what you’ll need if you want to be sure that damages to your bike will be covered if you get into an accident. Damages are typically paid out based on the book value of your motorcycle before the damages occurred.
  • Comprehensive coverage adds even more coverage for damages to your bike. It will cover your motorcycle if it’s damaged by an event that is not a collision. Causes of damage that are covered by comprehensive coverage include theft, vandalism or fires. Purchasing this coverage type can help you get full coverage for your motorcycle.
  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage is required in some states. Even though it isn’t required in Oklahoma, it can be useful if you get into an accident with someone who doesn’t have enough motorcycle or auto insurance. In these cases, if the at-fault driver doesn’t have insurance to provide for your coverage, your uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage will step in. It can cover your medical treatment, property damage and even lost wages while you recover from an accident.
  • Coverage for customized motorcycle parts (also known as accessories coverage) is for motorcycle owners that have added accessories or custom parts onto their bikes. Most collision and comprehensive policies will only cover the factory standard parts on your bike. If you’ve added any customization like a paint job, chrome parts or a trailer, you’ll need this separate coverage to cover it. It’s important to check with each insurance provider to see what it includes in this coverage.

Oklahoma Motorcycle Traffic Laws You Should Know

If you plan to drive your motorcycle on public roads, you should also be aware of the traffic laws in Oklahoma. Some of these laws apply to drivers of all vehicles, but there are laws that are specific to motorcycles as well.

Each law has its own definition of what a motorcycle is. In Oklahoma, the state has a definition for 2-wheeled vehicles. A motorcycle is defined as a motor vehicle with a seat or saddle for each rider to use. Motorcycles are also defined as having no more than 3 wheels in contact with the ground and a combustion engine with a piston or rotor displacement of greater than 150 ccs. 2-wheeled vehicles also include some mopeds and scooters.

To legally operate a motorcycle in Oklahoma, you need a motorcycle endorsement on your Oklahoma Driver License. To get this endorsement, you must pass a vision, written and driving exam. You can waive the drive test exam if you’ve completed a Motorcycle Safety Foundation course. This course is required if you are 17 or under.

Other motorcycle-specific laws you should be aware of include:

  • To carry passengers, a motorcycle must be equipped with at least 12-inch diameter wheels and have a double-seating device with double footrests. Alternatively, an attached sidecar with a dedicated seating space can carry a passenger.
  • Motorcycles must have 2 rear view mirrors that are each at least 3-inches in diameter.
  • Motorcycles should have a windshield. If the motorcycle does not have a windshield, drivers should wear goggles or a face shield.

State traffic laws for all vehicles include:

  • It’s illegal to compose, send or read an electronic text message while operating a motor vehicle.
  • Drivers with a blood alcohol content of .08 or more should not operate a motor vehicle. You may also face fines and penalties for driving under the influence of alcohol, narcotics, medication or other substances that produce intoxication.
  • Oklahoma’s speeding law states that motorists are required to drive at a careful speed that is reasonable when considering the speed limit, traffic and other conditions. Motorists need to adhere to the posted speed limits while on the road.
  • Oklahoma’s speed limits include 25 miles per hour in most school zones, 35 miles per hour on highways in state parks and wildlife refuges and 55 miles per hour on most county roads. Not adhering to these speed limits can result in fines or even jail time in some cases.

Oklahoma Motorcycle Insurance Rates Per Bike

There are several factors that insurance companies use when determining your motorcycle insurance rate. This includes:

  • Your age and where you live
  • Your driving record, including any accidents, tickets or fines
  • The location where you store your motorcycle
  • How many miles on average you ride your motorcycle each year
  • The type of insurance coverages that you select
  • The type of bike you drive and are insuring

Some of these factors may matter more or less, depending on the type of coverage you choose. For example, the location where you store your motorcycle could be a significant factor in a comprehensive coverage rate. The type of motorcycle you drive is 1 of the most important factors, no matter which type of coverages you choose.

When insurance companies sell an insurance policy, it is assuming risk. Your rate can change, depending on how much risk the insurance company thinks it is taking on. If you get in accidents and make claims often, the insurance company could be spending more on your claims than it made by selling the policy. That’s why in addition to your driving record, the type of bike you drive matters.

Statistically speaking, a motorcycle that was designed as a high-performance motorcycle is at greater risk of accidents than a motorcycle that was designed for easy riding. Here’s a quick overview of how those bikes differ:

  • High-performance motorcycles are optimized for acceleration, speed and braking. In most cases, high-performance bikes were designed as racing bikes but modified by manufacturers for road use. These bikes are typically much lighter than most other motorcycle styles and have a higher horsepower rate. Examples of a high-performance motorcycle include the Ducati Panigale and Honda CBR models.
  • Touring motorcycles are typically heavier than high-performance motorcycles and can be a great bike for beginners because they were designed to be easy to handle. Touring bikes are made for comfort and leisurely driving. The most popular example of a touring model is Harley-Davidson, but most manufacturers produce similar models.

To get your motorcycle insurance rate, you’ll start by entering your ZIP code to get a quote. To compare the quotes, you should be familiar with these terms:

  • Premium. Your insurance premium is the amount you’ll pay for your insurance policy to keep it active. This is likely the 1st number you will see when you get your quote. If you have more than 1 motorcycle, each will have its own premium.
  • Deductible. Your deductible is the amount you’ll pay out-of-pocket for any insurance claims you submit before the insurance company will payout.
