After a subdued response to AI chip giant NVDIA&#8217;s earnings on Wednesday night, it&#8217;s clear that traders are willing to keep stock prices in a range while the new administration&#8217;s changes continue to unfold in Washington D.C.
So, with memory chip-maker Micron&#8217;s earnings coming in the next few weeks, we can expect the same reaction.
A short iron condor trade is the way to take advantage and generate some income.&nbsp;
Micron (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MU#NASDAQ">MU</a>), which scores high on Benzinga Edge&#8217;s Growth and Quality rankings but has middling Momentum and Value, has been range bound since August, 2024. The range is tightening but the use of weekly contracts will increase time decay in our favor.
The stock&#8217;s resistance sits just above $105 but has rejected this line within days of touching. Support sits near $85 which has also been a favorable buying opportunity for traders with a bullish slant.&nbsp;
The way we trade this is with a short iron condor.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Understanding the short iron condor&nbsp;</h2>
A short iron condor consists of a short call spread and a short put spread combined to deliver higher income generation while the stock sits inside a channel.&nbsp;
When we position with short iron condors, we attempt to collect time decay while a chart bases or settles into a new direction. As always, we assume that we don't know the direction but are able to estimate the magnitude of the move using the ATR (average true range, measured on the weekly chart) and the implied moves that the market makers have priced into the move over the months ahead.&nbsp;
For this Micron setup, the short iron condor is:

<li>Sell to open 1 MU 28 Mar 105 calls&nbsp;</li>
<li>Buy to open 1 MU 28 Mar 115 calls&nbsp;</li>
<li>Sell to open 1 MU 28 Mar 85 puts&nbsp;</li>
<li>Buy to open 1 MU 28 Mar 75 puts&nbsp;</li>
</ul>
At this writing the credit received is $3.90. This represents the maximum profit we will collect. With this kind of position, we collect a premium and as this premium erodes, we collect revenue from the position.&nbsp;
Our maximum exposure is calculated the following way: the distance between the spread ($10) less the collected premium ($3.90) = $6.10.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Understanding the short iron condor spreads&nbsp;</h2>
I often get asked why someone should take a trade where the risk is higher than the potential reward. The answer is this: the probability of the short iron condor with strikes far out of the money (meaning far away from the current price of the stock) returning gains is often as much as nine times more likely than the long iron condor.
In the current case, this is what we are looking at – the probability that the short iron condor delivering gains is more than five times as likely. So, we make the trade on the side of probabilities, rather than the possibility of outsized gains.&nbsp;
The strategy result provides three choices to exit the trade:&nbsp;
<ol>
<li>To buy back the short iron condor once it gets to an acceptable profit margin for you. I customarily look for 50% to 70% profit for these kinds of trades.&nbsp;</li>
<li>To buy back the iron condor once it hits your loss threshold as determined by personal risk- this will happen with extreme movement. I customarily look at about 30% though depending on my size, I will choose 50%.</li>
<li>To hold the iron condor into expiration week before covering – this is a choice I would rarely recommend as prices can move quickly against you. And we have earnings scheduled for 3/20 and I would prefer to exit prior to the news if I take this kind of trade.</li>

Make This Income Trade as Chip Stocks Tumble

Bitcoin is trading lower. Weakness may be due to lower risk sentiment amid overall market concerns.

Chances are, a cursory look at the financial publication ecosystem will reveal that mobile technology specialist AppLovin Corp. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/APP#NASDAQ">APP</a>) is a fantastic discounted opportunity. Due <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/movers/25/02/43981217/applovin-stock-drops-on-multiple-short-reports-allegations-of-copying-meta-creating-smoke-and-mirrors-game">to multiple short-seller attacks</a>, APP stock finds itself down around 26% in the past five sessions. 
This extreme volatility has pushed APP's year-to-date performance into negative territory, with the stock now down 6% for the year, erasing its strong start. Still, investors may want to temper the dip-buying impulse.
To start, no questions exist regarding the dominant performance of APP stock. Over the past 52 weeks, the security returned around 450% — even with the horrific drop. However, the trouble emerged late last week when short-selling specialist The Bear Cave released a <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/short-ideas/25/02/43856737/applovin-stock-tumbles-as-short-seller-takes-a-closer-look-at-whats-driving-enormous-gains">research report alleging ad fraud</a>.
"The Bear Cave believes AppLovin&#8217;s rapid rise — up ~750% over the last year to around 35x revenue — is fueled by low-quality revenue growth from ads that are deceptive, predatory, and at times unreadable or unclickable," the short seller remarked.
Compounding matters was that on Wednesday, another short-seller report took the high valuation of APP stock to task. In the latest round, Fuzzy Panda Research accused AppLovin of stealing Meta Platforms Inc.&#8216;s data, among other claims.
It's important to recognize that AppLovin CEO Adam Foroughi issued a letter to the company's shareholders, partners and team <a href="https://www.applovin.com/blog/note-from-our-ceo/">responding</a> to the short-seller allegations. While Foroughi denies that AppLovin has the capability to reverse engineer Meta's ad data, some investors may be dissatisfied with the CEO's other rebuttals.
Arguably, the most damaging accusation relates to the issue of direct downloads, a matter which Culper Research — another short-selling specialist — shared with Fuzzy Panda. Foroughi stated that "[e]very download results from an explicit user choice." However, the CEO did not provide a rigorous defense of the core allegation of "silent installs."
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">APP Stock Faces a Historically Tough Road Ahead</h2>
To be sure, it's easy to understand why the retail crowd may view APP stock as a back-up-the-truck opportunity. Relative to its Valentine's Day closing price of $510.13, APP trades hands at about a 35% haircut. However, if the core allegations stick, the company would likely require a valuation adjustment.

Technically speaking, APP stock is treading in dangerous waters. Throughout this year, the security's 50-day moving average provided support. However, the combined short-seller attacks have driven sentiment below this critical barometer. Now, it's sandwiched between the 50 DMA at the top and the 200 DMA at the bottom (around $195).
Still, the statistical backdrop may be the most ominous warning sign. Under ordinary circumstances, APP stock enjoys an upward bias. Further, evidence shows that investors buy the dips — to a point. However, when extreme volatility suddenly emerges, the market tends to run away.
Using data extending back to its public market debut, a position entered at the beginning of the week has a 52.48% chance of rising by the end of it. Over an eight-week period, this baseline probability rises to 61.03%.

However, under dynamic conditions of extreme volatility, the stats don't look so inviting. Following a one-week loss of 15% or greater, the long odds in the subsequent week drop to 14.29%. Over an eight-week period, the dynamic probability does improve, but only to 28.57%.
In full transparency, there have only been seven instances when APP stock has incurred a 15%-plus weekly loss. Therefore, investors must consider the risk of distortion related to small datasets. Nevertheless, the combination of short-seller research, an arguably unconvincing response and weak technical data appears to bolster the statistical case against APP.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Why AppLovin Faces More Downside Risk</h2>
Going back to the statistical framework, the issue is not just the likelihood of poor long-side trades; rather, it's that the projected range of price outcomes conspicuously tilts downward relative to the expected range of price outcomes under baseline conditions.
Using the market intelligence above and assuming the negative scenario wins out, APP stock runs the risk of incurring a median loss of 16.98% over the next three weeks. That would put a downside target of $273.98, assuming that APP finishes this week at $330.
For an aggressive trade with some margin for error, traders may consider the 310/300 bear put spread for the options chain expiring March 21. This transaction calls for buying the $310 put (at an ask of $2,070) and simultaneously selling the $300 put (at a bid of $1,600).
The trader would use the proceeds from the short put sale to partially offset the debit of the long put, resulting in a net debit paid of $470. If APP stock falls to or below the short put strike of $300 at expiration, the trader would collect $530 or a payout of almost 113%.
A much more aggressive trade — albeit with a cheaper net debit — is the 305/300 bear put spread expiring one week earlier on March 14. This transaction requires a cash outlay of $240 for the chance to earn $260, resulting in a 108.3% payout.
Choosing an expiration period is a speculative balancing act. While a longer period is "safer" in the sense that it gives more time for the directional thesis to pan out, if the spread becomes profitable prior to the expiration, traders wanting to exit early must account for the unnecessary time value, which becomes an opportunity cost.

Fidelity, who owns a stake in the company, has been<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/24/12/42271676/fidelity-raises-valuation-of-elon-musks-x-but-its-still-worth-72-less-than-his-buyout-price"> discounting its carrying value</a> of the company. In December, Fidelity valued X at $12.3 billion, or down 72% from its original buyout price.
Companies associated with Musk have witnessed increased valuations since the 2024 election thanks to the billionaire's close relationship with President Donald Trump. SpaceX, xAI and Tesla saw higher valuations to close out 2024 and in early 2025.
Musk recently said X<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/11/41766191/elon-musk-says-x-saw-record-usage-on-election-day-as-trump-closes-in-on-white-house-win" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">&nbsp;saw record usage&nbsp;</a>during the 2024 presidential election, but growth may be slowing into the new 2025 year.
A January email Musk sent to X staff highlighted his concerns for the company&#8217;s financial state.
&#8220;Our user growth is stagnant, revenue is unimpressive, and we&#8217;re barely breaking even,&#8221; Musk said in an email, as&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wsj.com/finance/banking/wall-street-banks-prepare-to-sell-billions-of-dollars-of-x-loans-c609beb1?mod=e2tw" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">seen&nbsp;</a>by The Wall Street Journal.
While Musk was unimpressed with the financial state of X, the comment of breaking even comes after years of losses for the social media company. Musk highlighted the rising influence X has in the same email.
&#8220;Over the last few months, we&#8217;ve witnessed the power of X in shaping national conversations and outcomes. We are also seeing other platforms begin to adopt our commitment to free speech and unbiased truth.&#8221;
With the potential that X&#8217;s financials have stabled with break-even earnings along with Musk&#8217;s friendship with Trump, banks could see this as the perfect time to sell off unwanted debt in X.
The report said that some investors have reached out to banks with interest in buying up debt in X due to the improving financials and public image.
X could see an improving financial situation and rise in valuation in 2025 with the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/social-media/25/01/43373012/elon-musk-bringing-advertisers-back-to-x-amazon-boosts-spending-apple-considers-return">return of advertisers</a> to the platform and the pending launch of a payments platform.
Musk <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/m-a/22/10/29334819/elon-musk-sees-long-term-potential-in-twitter-despite-obviously-overpaying-for-it">previously shared optimism </a>for X and its future valuation.
&#8220;I see a clear, but difficult, path to a &lt;$250B valuation,&#8221; Musk said previously.

The study was conducted by Benzinga from Feb. 19, 2025 through Feb. 21, 2025. It included the responses of a diverse population of adults 18 or older. Opting into the survey was completely voluntary, with no incentives offered to potential respondents. The study reflects results from 98 adults.
