The Ensign Group, Inc.
ENSG, the parent company of the Ensign™ group of skilled nursing,
rehabilitative care services, home health, home care, hospice care, assisted
living and urgent care companies, announced today that it acquired the real
estate and operations of Mesa Springs, a 44-acre post-acute care campus
located in Abilene, Texas comprised of a 75-bed skilled nursing operation and
60 independent living homes. The purchase was made in connection with the
Chapter 11 bankruptcy filed by Sears Methodist Retirement System in June of
last year and was effective February 1, 2015.
"This remarkable campus is the perfect complement to our existing operations
in Abilene," said Christopher Christensen, Ensign's President and Chief
Executive Officer. "The combination of these facilities with Ensign's existing
operations in West Texas further enhances operating synergies in Abilene's
vibrant and well-regarded healthcare community," he added.
Kevin Reese, President of Keystone Care, LLC, Ensign's subsidiary for Texas
operations, noted that the operations in this facility are in good condition,
adding, "the former operator has done an excellent job of creating a caring,
competent and patient-centered environment", and that Keystone hopes to
enhance and build upon what he called "the foundation of quality care already
present." He added that staff, resident and community response to Ensign's
acquisition of the facility has been very positive and that he expects the
operation, which had an occupancy rate of approximately 80% at acquisition, to
be accretive to earnings in 2015.
This purchase, along with the Omaha, Nebraska acquisition Ensign announced on
the same day, brings Ensign's growing portfolio to 143 facilities, eleven
hospice agencies, thirteen home health agencies, two home care businesses and
sixteen urgent care clinics across 12 states.
Mr. Christensen reaffirmed that Ensign is actively seeking additional
opportunities to acquire real estate or to lease both well-performing and
struggling skilled nursing, assisted living and other healthcare related
businesses across the United States.
