From Surfer To Billionaire: GoPro CEO Nick Woodman Chats With Stephen Colbert

GoPro Inc GPRO CEO Nick Woodman stopped by CBS Corporation CBS's "Late Show" studio on Wednesday night. Host Stephen Colbert wore a GoPro on his head for the duration of the interview, while Woodman touted the new HERO Session 4 camera. More interestingly, he spoke about his inspiration for creating GoPro.

"I was out of a job. I failed at my first business. I was 26 and I needed to find some inspiration for what to do next with my life," Woodman began. "I took whatever savings I had and planned a five-month surf trip around the world... I believe when you're looking for inspiration, you follow your passions. I believe that's when humans are most turned on and most attuned to new ideas."

New idea? Tiny camera.

"As luck would have it, I came up with the idea for GoPro before I left for my trip, which was for a wrist camera I could wear while surfing to shoot photos of my friends I was taking the trip with." Woodman spent next five months fine-tuning the camera while he was living out of his van and backpack.

Ever the comedian, Colbert chimed in and said, "[and then] you came home a potential billionaire. I've only had a 27 shows and your my sixth billionaire." Woodman then punched a hole in Colbert's billionaire punch card.

In Colbert's first month as host of "Late Show," he's made a mark by having guests that don't usually show up on late-night television. Previous guests include Tesla Motors Inc TSLA CEO Elon Musk and Apple Inc. AAPL CEO Tim Cook.
