What Happened: The Chinese government has advised major tech companies such as Alibaba Group Holding Ltd (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BABA#NYSE">BABA</a>), Baidu Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BIDU#NASDAQ">BIDU</a>), ByteDance, and Tencent Holdings Ltd (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TCEHY#OTC">TCEHY</a>) to decrease their spending on foreign-made-chips, including those from Nvidia, The Information <a href="https://www.theinformation.com/articles/chinese-regulators-tell-local-tech-firms-to-buy-fewer-nvidia-chips">reported</a> on Monday, citing people familiar with the matter.

<a href="https://www.benzinga.com//node/38577767">Gaining control over the global supply of chips</a> is becoming a central priority for Western governments trying to compete with China in the race to dominate the industry.
Pandemic-related disruptions showed how a lack of semiconductors <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/21/09/23093194/semiconductor-shortage-hits-supply-chain-for-medtech-industry">can negatively impact a vast number of industries</a>. Now more than ever, securing a steady flow of chips is being placed atop geopolitical strategies worldwide.
This is part of the reasoning behind a long list of sizable investments that governments are pouring on their domestic building capabilities. Subsidies are expected to reach hundreds of billions of dollars in the coming decade.
Biden Pushes Hard: In the U.S., incentives for the semiconductor industry already amount to $32.8 billion as part of President Joe Biden's <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/chips-act">far-reaching CHIPS Act</a> in an effort to boost jobs, gain independence from Asian production and improve the administration's image ahead of the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/2024-election">presidential election</a>.
On Monday, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said it's "<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/asia/24/05/38795043/yellen-calls-for-fair-trade-with-china-urges-other-central-banks-to-limit-currency-interventions">critically important for the United States to have a role in strategic industries</a>," including semiconductors.
Micron Technology Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MU#NASDAQ">MU</a>) and Intel Corp (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/INTC#NASDAQ">INTC</a>) are among U.S. companies poised <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/24/05/38650086/intel-micron-among-winners-in-bidens-280b-chips-act-for-semiconductor-advancement">to benefit from measures coming from the CHIPS Act</a>.
Another $39 billion in subsidies have been promised by the government, along with $75 billion in loans and tax breaks for companies in the sector, <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2024-05-12/chip-technology-spending-gets-81-billion-boost-in-china-rivalry?srnd=homepage-americas&amp;sref=TBDibEcD">according</a> to Bloomberg.
The administration's strategy to bolster the chips industry <a href="https://www.benzinga.com//node/38682654">also includes several export restrictions on China</a>, along with international lobbying efforts with European partners aimed at limiting China's access to key technology needed to develop the most advanced semiconductors.
Earlier this year, ASML Holding NV (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ASML#NASDAQ">ASML</a>), a Dutch company producing machines that are vital in the development of advanced semiconductors, <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/24/01/36591828/chipmaking-giant-asml-at-the-heart-of-u-s-china-tech-battle-export-bans-and-global-implications">raised concerns over its place at the center of a broader geopolitical conflict</a> between China and the U.S.
Export controls by the U.S. on China are affecting some of its largest players. Last week, China&#8217;s top chipmaker Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/asia/24/05/38751498/chinas-top-chipmaker-smic-sees-profit-margin-plummet-to-15-year-low-amid-us-export-controls">reported its worst margin since the 2008 financial crisis</a>.
The U.S. government has <a href="https://www.benzinga.com//node/38682654">recently revoked export licenses that previously allowed </a>Intel and Qualcomm Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QCOM#NASDAQ">QCOM</a>), to supply essential chips to Shenzhen-based Huawei.

China's $142B Response: For its part, China is also funneling billions into reaching semiconductor sovereignty. The exact figure is unclear since the Chinese government doesn't make those numbers public, yet an estimate from the Semiconductor Industry Association puts the figure at $142 billion between executed and planned financing.
According to Bloomberg, China now has more semiconductor fabs under construction than any other country. The country's massive efforts are born out of a need to compensate for restricted access to U.S. and European-made equipment, without which manufacturing the most complex semiconductors still remains impossible.
In her Monday interview, Yellen also warned against possible overflows in specific industries after "enormous subsidies in critical areas of advanced manufacturing has resulted in overcapacity," in China.
That's the main concern behind the recent wave of stimulus spreading across the Northern Hemisphere.
India, Japan and Europe Also Want In: In Europe, several plans have been unveiled to pour billions into the industry, including a wide-ranging initiative from the European Union as well as specific state-backed programs.
The European Chips Act will "mobilize more than €43 billion ($46 billion) of public and private investments and set measures to prepare, anticipate and swiftly respond to any future supply chain disruptions, together with Member States and international partners," according to an official press release.
Germany, France and The Netherlands have already spent a collective $24 billion in subsidies while several more billions have been proposed in Spain, Italy and the UK.
Over in Asia, the biggest state-backed investments so far come from Japan, where $16 billion of a total planned of $64 billion have been allocated, and India where $7 billion have been allocated from a $10 billion government fund.

China's Semiconductor Spending Tops US With $142B Commitment: Global Chip Race Heats Up

The government has revoked licenses to&nbsp;Intel Corp&nbsp;(NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/INTC#NASDAQ">INTC</a>) and&nbsp;Qualcomm Inc&nbsp;(NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QCOM#NASDAQ">QCOM</a>).&nbsp;
Kumar noted that the move forced Intel to&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com//node/38706594" rel="noreferrer noopener">revise its quarterly revenue guidance</a>, while Qualcomm did not make any changes due to its low exposure to Huawei.&nbsp;
The analyst noted that Qualcomm only provided 4G modems and other Wi-Fi products to the company and expected product revenues to disappear by the end of the year.&nbsp;
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co&nbsp;(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSM#NYSE">TSM</a>) also reported April revenues this week, which were up significantly year-on-year to&nbsp;the tune of&nbsp;~60%, Kumar flagged. He noted this&nbsp;is&nbsp;largely driven&nbsp;by leading-edge customers such as&nbsp;Nvidia Corp&nbsp;(NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>) and&nbsp;Apple Inc&nbsp;(AAPL). On Apple, the company is reportedly looking to work on implementing OpenAI&#8217;s ChatGPT into its next version of iOS.&nbsp;&nbsp;
<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/05/38787960/arm-holdings-gears-up-for-ai-foray-with-new-chip-division-launching-next-year" rel="noreferrer noopener">Recent reports indicated</a>&nbsp;that Arm Holdings Inc&nbsp;(NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ARM#NASDAQ">ARM</a>) plans to commercialize its first AI chips by fall 2025.
Meanwhile, China became stricter in its retaliation to the U.S. embargo on AI chips. Wall Street kicked off a data-heavy week on a mixed note as traders await key inflation updates and remarks from Fed Chair Jerome Powell <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-ratings/analyst-color/24/05/38790019/april-inflation-data-preview-why-analysts-expect-economic-pressure-to-cool">in the coming days.</a>
The S&amp;P 500 remained stable, hovering around Friday&#8217;s closing levels and not far from record highs. The Nasdaq 100 rose 0.2%, poised for its third consecutive session of gains, marking the seventh positive session in the last eight.

Revenue increased 265% from the previous year, reaching $22.1 billion. Net income surged to $12.28 billion, up 765%. Doubters sold, but within days it kept rising.



Approaching its first quarter report for 2025, due May 22, Nvidia stock is wobbling again, but at a higher level. It has passed and fallen back from $900/share several times. Nvidia can&rsquo;t do this again, can it?



<h2>Shiny Objects</h2>



A lot of smart people <a href="https://www.fool.com/investing/2024/05/12/billionaire-stan-druckenmiller-cut-nvidia/">don&rsquo;t think it can</a>. Even if Nvidia offers an upside surprise, they say there are <a href="https://finance.yahoo.com/news/2-nasdaq-stocks-could-crush-152700836.html">shinier objects</a> in this new AI world. Some, like our Dmytro Spilka, see bigger gains <a href="https://investorplace.com/2024/05/3-sp-500-stocks-to-rival-nvidias-2023-performance-in-the-second-half-of-2024/">outside </a>what some call the &ldquo;AI bubble.&rdquo;



It would be logical to believe this. Analysts have <a href="https://www.thestreet.com/investing/stocks/analyst-adjusts-nvidia-stock-target-price-ahead-of-earnings">raised their price targets</a>. Last quarter&rsquo;s surprise won&rsquo;t be good enough, with the stock at $900.



There&rsquo;s an assumption that this can&rsquo;t go on. Nvidia is at the front-end of the AI boom, the infrastructure end. At some point, the action will move to applications, monetizing the huge investment Cloud Czars are making in Nvidia chips. At some point, attention will turn from Nvidia to other places on the AI stack.



Competitors like Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/amd-stock-quote/">AMD</a>) <a href="https://investorplace.com/2024/05/amd-stock-alert-why-you-should-sell-advanced-micro-devices-now/">have begun to roll over</a>. Intel (NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/intc-stock-quote/">INTC</a>) is <a href="https://www.fool.com/investing/2024/05/11/this-is-what-the-latest-artificial-intelligence-ai/">being left in the dust</a>, even if its new fabs manage to become a secondary source for Nvidia chips.



<h2>Blackwell: The Next Magic Trick</h2>



But then there&rsquo;s Blackwell.



The new Blackwell platform, introduced in March, is <a href="https://nvidianews.nvidia.com/news/nvidia-blackwell-platform-arrives-to-power-a-new-era-of-computing">like nothing that has come before</a>. The chips are bigger, with more functions integrated on the chip to keep things from slowing down.



We&rsquo;re talking about a single chip that can execute 1.4 quintillion instructions per second (1.4 exaflops), with 30 Terabytes of memory. Nvidia will also build new boards for Blackwell, and stack them in new custom-made racks.



The Cloud Czars are salivating over this like shelter puppies seeing their new family. Nvidia&rsquo;s key supplier, Taiwan Semiconductor (NYSE:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/tsm-stock-quote/">TSM</a>), saw its <a href="https://www.barrons.com/articles/nvidia-stock-price-buy-sell-a3c8dfc2">sales jump 60%</a> in its recent earnings report. 



AI experts are talking about <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/digital-assets/2024/05/11/exponential-baby-navigating-the-ai--convergence-of-tech-with-nvidia/?sh=41ca9ed81714">exponential growth </a>as businesses adopt generative AI, and as it spreads around the world.



<h2>Adoption Risks</h2>



The biggest risk to Nvidia comes not from the market, but from society. Many white collar jobs seem threatened by generative AI. Nearly every role in every business will change radically over the next few years, we&rsquo;re told. Anyone who can&rsquo;t keep up will be left behind.



Then there are the energy needs of AI, <a href="https://www.profgalloway.com/big-energy/">which could also break society</a>, according to Scott Galloway.



If you think the world is being disrupted now, in other words, you ain&rsquo;t seen nothing yet. Try Googling <a href="https://news.google.com/search?q=ai%20disruption&amp;hl=en-US&amp;gl=US&amp;ceid=US%3Aen">&ldquo;AI disruption.&rdquo;</a> Every industry, and every nation, is preparing for an earthquake<a href="https://www.imf.org/en/Blogs/Articles/2024/01/14/ai-will-transform-the-global-economy-lets-make-sure-it-benefits-humanity">, like the one that took out Pompeii</a>.



This may be the biggest risk to Nvidia&rsquo;s stock, and that of its Cloud Czar customers. The world just isn&rsquo;t ready for what Blackwell can do.



<h2>The Bottom Line on Nvidia Stock</h2>



I expect to hear good news in the Nvidia earnings statement.



I bought 100 shares back in 2018, sold half after the last 4-for-1 stock split, and now find Nvidia is my largest position again. Another stock split could come, and there will be enormous pressure to sell some shares.



Should you get in ahead of it? Analysts now expect revenue of $24.5 billion, up 234% from a year ago and 16% from the last quarter. They see net income of $5.05 per share. Shares will fall if the company fails to hit those marks.



The experts are saying you should <a href="https://finance.yahoo.com/news/buy-nvidia-stock-ai-chipmaker-074500624.html">hold off and wait for a cheaper multiple</a>. Or perhaps focus on companies that are smaller and can deliver truly exponential gains.



That&rsquo;s what the experts said in February. Those who took their advice missed out.

Intel&nbsp;(NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/intc-stock-quote/">INTC</a>) was a darling of the chipmaking market many years ago. Then, it was a laughingstock in 2022, and then a darling again in 2023. Now, Intel is a troubled business again in 2024. Honestly, who really needs to invest in a nauseating roller-coaster play like Intel stock?



We&rsquo;re giving the stock a &ldquo;D&rdquo; grade and telling you right now that it&rsquo;s perfectly fine to get off that roller coaster. Just look at the progress of the Intel&nbsp;share price from May 2023 to May 2024.



That&rsquo;s right &mdash; there was no progress during that time frame. Intel stock was &ldquo;dead money,&rdquo; and we didn&rsquo;t identify any compelling reasons to invest your hard-earned capital in Intel now.



<h2>U.S. Blocks Intel&rsquo;s Chip Sales to Huawei</h2>



As <a href="https://www.scmp.com/news/world/united-states-canada/article/3261925/us-china-tech-war-intel-expects-revenue-fall-below-midpoint-projections-after-huawei-ban">multiple</a> <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2024/5/8/24152031/intel-revenue-huawei-commerce-department-license-revoked">reporters</a> have stated, the U.S. government has banned Intel from exporting to China-based technology-product manufacturer Huawei Technologies. The objective is for the U.S. <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2024/05/08/us-revokes-some-export-licenses-to-sell-chips-to-chinas-huawei.html">to curb</a> China&rsquo;s tech-industry power.



That&rsquo;s bad news for Intel, a major supplier of chips to Huawei. Intel has acknowledged that Huawei export ban would <a href="https://finance.yahoo.com/news/intel-battered-bulls-hopes-dashed-134349157.html">put pressure on</a> the chipmaker&rsquo;s revenue.



This is the worst possible timing for Intel. The company is trying to reinvent itself as a foundry chipmaker. By that, we mean Intel seeks to manufacture its own chips and sell them to other companies.



Considering this adverse development, Daniel Newman, CEO of The Futurum Group, offered a stark warning about Intel stock. 



&ldquo;There&rsquo;s <a href="https://finance.yahoo.com/news/intel-battered-bulls-hopes-dashed-134349157.html">no reason to own it</a> in the short-term, since short-term investors have to deal with capex outlays, issues with the foundry business, and a lack of meaningful data-center growth,&rdquo; Newman cautioned.



<h2>Apple Will Be a Tough Competitor to Intel</h2>



In case there wasn&rsquo;t enough negative news about Intel, here&rsquo;s another distressing tidbit. As you may be aware, artificial intelligence personal computer chips are an important revenue source for Intel. Now, Intel will have a major competitor in this area.



Actually, &ldquo;competitor&rdquo; might not be the right word; &ldquo;obliterator&rdquo; may be more appropriate. Apple&rsquo;s&nbsp;(NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/aapl-stock-quote/">AAPL</a>) new <a href="https://www.crn.com/news/computing/2024/apple-calls-ai-pc-rivals-laggards-with-m4-based-ipad-pro-reveal">M4 chip</a> is supposedly <a href="https://www.pcworld.com/article/2326415/apple-claims-its-ai-will-obliterate-pcs-nah-not-really.html">so powerful</a> that it could make the competitors&rsquo; AI-PC chips instantly obsolete.



Per Yahoo! Finance, Apple claims that the M4 chip&rsquo;s neural engine is the &ldquo;company&rsquo;s fastest yet.&rdquo; The M4 is apparently &ldquo;more powerful than any neural processing unit available on today&rsquo;s AI PCs.&rdquo;



Consider the implications for Intel in 2024. Apple is a massive, capital-rich juggernaut that can continue to develop its chips. Intel now has to fend off the threat posed by Apple&rsquo;s ultrapowerful M4 chip. To borrow some old song lyrics, we &ldquo;see a bad moon rising&rdquo; for Intel.



<h2>Intel Stock: Say &lsquo;No, Thanks&rsquo; to the Roller Coaster</h2>



Intel&rsquo;s shareholders were either brilliant or just luck in 2023. Hopefully, they had the foresight to take profits while those profits were available.

<h2>Invesco QQQ (QQQ)</h2>

Yes, it is certainly more risky than a broader group of stocks, but <a href="https://investorplace.com/industries/technology/">tech stocks</a> have been driving the bulk of the gains and form the core of most hedge funds nowadays.



This ETF is not a &ldquo;stock,&rdquo; but it tracks the performance of the&nbsp;Nasdaq-100. Big Tech accounts for 45% of QQQ. Many see that as a bearish factor, but I would disagree. Big Tech has locked in AI, quantum computing, cloud, and many other narratives that we don&rsquo;t even know about. These companies are scooping up promising startups and have very sticky revenues as most people spend a huge chunk of their time online.



And of course, the best thing is that it uses a modified capitalization-weighted index, so your holdings will evolve with the trends.



<h2>Axon Enterprise (AXON)</h2>

Moreover, it recently&nbsp;<a href="https://www.dedrone.com/press/axon-to-acquire-dedrone-accelerating-the-next-generation-of-drone-solutions-to-protect-more-lives-in-more-places" target="_blank">acquired air defense startup Dedrone</a>. This also makes it a great defense play since drones are heavily used in warfare now, and countering them is essential.



Moreover, their AI-assisted &ldquo;Draft One&rdquo; solution&nbsp;<a href="https://seekingalpha.com/article/4689938-axon-enterprise-inc-axon-q1-2024-earnings-call-transcript" target="_blank">claims to cut a sizable 40% of officers&rsquo; time</a>&nbsp;normally spent writing reports. With revenue growing 34.3% year-over-year to $461 million and earnings per share of $1.15 exceeding forecasts by 20 cents, it&rsquo;s hard to not be bullish. Future estimates are also very bullish.

However, I&rsquo;m confident the record $6 billion order backlog will lead to a solid year ahead, fueled by AI.

The company&rsquo;s strategy of Intelligent System Design is also paying dividends. It is helping increase productivity for major clients like&nbsp;Intel&nbsp;(NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/intc-stock-quote/">INTC</a>) and&nbsp;Qualcomm&nbsp;(NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/qcom-stock-quote/">QCOM</a>) through AI solutions that can design new systems by itself.



Moreover, Cadence seems to be firing on all cylinders with the recent launch of its third-generation emulation and prototyping platforms receiving endorsements from&nbsp;Nvidia&nbsp;(NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/nvda-stock-quote/">NVDA</a>) and&nbsp;AMD&nbsp;(NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/amd-stock-quote/">AMD</a>).



The stock is up a solid 314% in the past five years and has been very stable and consistent as it climbs. Now, where it goes from here in 20 years depends a lot on AI, but I remain optimistic.



<h2>Trane Technologies (TT)</h2>

It focuses on air conditioners and similar products. If we continue seeing summers like the one in 2023, AC companies are going to be among the best investments going forward. They already have delivered tremendous returns.



Plus, it&rsquo;s hard to not be bullish after looking at its chart, as TT stock has outperformed the broader market by stellar figures. It is up 249% in the past five years and the &ldquo;exponential&rdquo; trend makes me optimistic. It also has a 1% dividend yield to sweeten the deal. I expect the uptrend to continue in the long run as its top and bottom lines keep expanding.

With the order backlog increasing 10% sequentially to $7.7 billion, including $1.8 billion for orders to be fulfilled in 2025 and beyond, I have a very good conviction here.



Management also raised their projections for the full year. I wouldn&rsquo;t be amazed to see estimates continue climbing higher if this momentum sustains.



<h2>Xiaomi (XIACF)</h2>

It is an under-the-radar pick among these seven stocks for early retirement. You may know Xiaomi phones, but this company sells a lot more. It is a diversified electronics company that has a hold on many emerging markets, especially in Asia. The company&rsquo;s products are affordable for people in these regions, and the brand has a good reputation.



The stock declined along with the broader Chinese market but is making a sharp comeback as the Chinese market recovers. It is up 28% year-to-date. Nearly half its sales are also from outside of China.

Their strategic focus on high-end products is&nbsp;clearly&nbsp;paying off, with the Xiaomi 14 Series breaking multiple sales records and the 14 Pro model attracting many new customers above the 5K price point.



I expect stellar 20-year returns from here if the trends continue.



<h2>MakeMyTrip (MMYT)</h2>

India is still much behind China, but its economy has been growing fast. A huge wave of people are getting out of poverty each year and are taking vacations.



As India&rsquo;s domestic aviation industry prepares to nearly double passenger capacity over the next eight years, MakeMyTrip seems ideally positioned to capture an even greater share of the expanding market.



Looking ahead, forecasts indicate India&rsquo;s outbound travel market will be among the fastest-growing components globally. With international bookings already surpassing pre-pandemic highs, it wouldn&rsquo;t be surprising to see MakeMyTrip&rsquo;s overseas segment play a major role. This industry leader appears to be excellently capitalizing on very strong tailwinds over the next two decades. Analysts&nbsp;<a href="https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/MMYT/earnings/estimates" target="_blank">expect EPS to almost triple from 62 cents to $1.78</a>&nbsp;and revenue to surge from $794 million to $1.2 billion over the next two years. Analyst ratings are bullish too.

Revenue&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.google.com/finance/quote/DECK:NYSE">reached $1.56 billion in Q4</a>, up an impressive 16% from the same period last year. What&nbsp;really&nbsp;stood out was the exponential growth in their direct-to-consumer sales, which rose 23% to an all-time high of 55% of the total business.

Despite its size and business nature, semiconductor company Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/amd-stock-quote/">AMD</a>) may not reach a trillion-dollar market cap like Nvidia (NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/nvda-stock-quote/">NVDA</a>) in the AI market. While its GPUs suit AI platforms, Nvidia dominates this market, and Intel (NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/intc-stock-quote/">INTC</a>) leads in the personal computing market.



However, AMD&rsquo;s client business revenue increased to $1.4 billion, which was an 85% increase from 2022. Introducing the Ryzen Pro 8000 series and expansions boosted revenue and market share. Recent collaborations with partners like Lenovo and HP strengthen AMD&rsquo;s position in the PC market.



If you&rsquo;re part of the group of investors still thinking of buying AMD stock, here&rsquo;s everything you need to know about the company as of late.



<h2>Q1 Beats Estimates</h2>



After reporting<a href="https://finance.yahoo.com/news/advanced-micro-devices-inc-nasdaq-195837429.html#:~:text=For%20the%20first%20quarter%20of,our%20Gaming%20and%20Embedded%20segment."> Q1 earnings on April 30</a>, the chipmaker&rsquo;s shares fell, despite meeting revenue expectations at $5.5 billion, a 2.2% annual increase. Adjusted EPS reached $0.62, up 3.3% year over year, narrowly exceeding analyst forecasts.&nbsp;



Data center revenue surged 80% to $2.3 billion, driven by the MI300 series, while the client segment rose 85% to $1.4 billion. Despite declines in gaming and embedded segments, a rebound is expected later in the year. 



MI300 accelerator sales surpassed $1 billion since Q4 2023, powering cloud operations for giants like Google, Amazon, and Oracle.



AMD&rsquo;s EVP, CFO, and Treasurer Jean Hu stated, &ldquo;We&rsquo;re positioned to drive revenue growth and margin improvement, investing in large AI opportunities.&rdquo; Q2 revenue is projected at $5.7 billion, up 4% sequentially and 6% annually. 



AI chip sales are expected to hit $4 billion this year, surpassing the January 2024 forecast of $3.5 billion. Analysts foresee AMD&rsquo;s EPS reaching $2.62 in fiscal 2024, up 31.7% annually, and rising to $4.40 in fiscal 2025, a 67.9% increase.



Last week, AMD&rsquo;s quarterly results met expectations, with revenue in line and updated guidance as forecasted. However, investors sold AMD stock due to a <a href="https://www.tomshardware.com/pc-components/gpus/amds-gaming-revenue-nosedives-48-not-expected-to-recover-until-2025">48% drop in gaming unit sales</a> despite an 80% increase in data center sales.



Investors were disappointed by AMD&rsquo;s updated 2024 MI300 sales forecast. Despite a revision to $4 billion, below some analysts&rsquo; $8 billion projections, the stock dropped 9%. This cautious outlook may lead to further declines, but selling AMD might be regretted in the long run.



<h2>The Stock Is Still a Buy</h2>



Future growth opportunities abound. Mordor Intelligence projects a <a href="https://www.mordorintelligence.com/industry-reports/graphics-processing-unit-market">33% annualized growth in the GPU market until 2029</a>. Markwide Research suggests a 6% yearly growth in the CPU market for the same period. 



The consensus analyst prediction is that AMD&rsquo;s revenue will increase by nearly 13% this year, reaching 28% growth next year, with similar growth anticipated in the following years.



AMD&rsquo;s post-earnings decline wasn&rsquo;t unexpected. Sentiment had turned bearish on the AI chip play. While some sold due to lowered expectations, this is shortsighted. Reasons for optimism include AMD&rsquo;s AI-PC chip rollout and positive macro factors.



In retrospect, the market overestimated AMD&rsquo;s potential earlier this year, leading to a double-digit drop from highs above $225. However, current prices no longer reflect future solid potential. Positive catalysts could lead to earnings surpassing expectations and potentially re-rating to $200 or even $250 per share within a year.&nbsp;



If you own AMD stock, holding tight could be the right move right now.

Many chip stocks performed well because of the buzz around artificial intelligence. Intel&rsquo;s share price surged over 94.6% in 2023. Intel&rsquo;s stock has plummeted over 40% this year.



Below are 3 reasons Intel will likely remain a shadow of its former self.



<h2>Chip Manufacturing and Intel Stock</h2>



Intel&rsquo;s manufacturing difficulties have been the discussion of many analysts for some years now. The chip manufacturer was once a beacon of American prowess in homegrown chip manufacturing. 



However, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (NYSE:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/tsm-stock-quote/">TSM</a>) has continued to extend its lead over Intel. Unlike many other semiconductor companies like Nvidia (NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/nvda-stock-quote/">NVDA</a>) and AMD (NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/amd-stock-quote/">AMD</a>), Intel has prided itself on doing its manufacturing in-house. 



Complications, unfortunately, have hampered Intel&rsquo;s ability to manufacture down to smaller nodes.



Last year, Intel announced it would <a href="https://www.hpcwire.com/2023/06/27/intel-looks-to-regain-semiconductor-chip-leadership-from-tsmc-separates-manufacturing-and-fabless-units/">decouple</a> its foundry (manufacturing) business from its fabless division, which would provide the chip company&rsquo;s manufacturing unit with more autonomy and the ability to take on non-Intel clients. 



This move will allow the fabless division to mimic TSMC, which could bring about secular tail winds for Intel in the long run. I cannot help but be cynical. Intel is essentially playing catch-up, and it will take a lot of time and resources to absorb the demand for AI chips that&rsquo;s out there.



<h2>China Sales Slump</h2>



A couple of weeks ago, Chinese technology champion Huawei quietly released a set of laptops dubbed &ldquo;MateBook X Pro&rdquo; that were powered by Intel&rsquo;s new Core Ultra 9 processor. 



The most intriguing fact about this new Intel processor powering Huawei&rsquo;s new line of laptops is that this chip boasts AI capabilities. 



It wasn&rsquo;t long before U.S. regulators looked into the situation and announced they were <a href="https://www.reuters.com/technology/us-revoked-some-export-licenses-chinas-huawei-2024-05-07/">revoking</a> both Intel and Qualcomm&rsquo;s (NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/qcom-stock-quote/">QCOM</a>) export licenses that allowed them to sell chips for Huawei&rsquo;s laptops and handsets.



This could have been a durable source of growth for Intel&rsquo;s chip business, especially with China being a huge market for chips. 



Geopolitics has squandered the prospects of that growth lever and leaves Intel little choice but to rely on smaller markets for long term growth.



<h2>Earnings Didn&rsquo;t Impress</h2>



Anyone wondering when Intel will effectively compete in the AI market shouldn&rsquo;t hold their breath. The chipmaker&rsquo;s recent <a href="http://v">first quarter earnings report for fiscal year 2024</a> not only saw Intel issuing weak guidance for Q2 2024 but also highlighted the headwinds Intel is facing in its Foundry and Data Center and AI businesses. 



Both of these business units are succumbing to their respective competitive environments. The Foundry business playing catch-up with TSMC was already highlighted above.



The Data Center and AI business, which competes with Nvidia on AI server chips, only grew by 5% on a year-over-year basis. 



Investors should not be quick to get excited about Intel&rsquo;s announcement of the AI-enabling <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2024/04/09/intel-unveils-gaudi-3-ai-chip-as-nvidia-competition-heats-up-.html">Gaudi 3</a> processors. 



Yes, this processor will compete with Nvidia&rsquo;s H100 chip, but shipments will not come until much later into the year, and Intel has a long way to go before dethroning Nvidia, which has already garnered a name for itself in the AI chip space.
