LAC Stock Earnings: Lithium Americas Meets EPS for Q1 2024

Lithium Americas GAAP EPS of -$0.06 misses by $0.06

<p><a href="https://investorplace.com/industries/energy/renewable-energy/battery/lithium/">Lithium stocks</a> have plunged on the back of a massive meltdown in prices. The dominant sentiment for lithium is fear, as investors stay away from the best lithium stocks to buy at deeply undervalued levels. As a value investor, this is a golden buying opportunity.</p>



<p>Of course, it&rsquo;s not the time to go overboard. However, I would certainly recommend the gradual accumulation of high-quality lithium stocks. Last year, BMI indicated that a global lithium shortage could come as early as 2025. Further, a 2022 report by Boston Consulting Group estimates that the lithium supply gap will be at least 1.1 million metric tons by 2035.</p>



<p>There can be deviations from these estimates, with EV adoption being slower than expected. However, there is no doubt that the supply-demand scenario will remain tight in the long term. This will translate into higher lithium prices.</p>



<p>Let&rsquo;s, therefore, talk about three lithium stocks to buy and hold for multibagger returns potential.</p>



<h2>Lithium Americas (LAC)</h2>

The upside was backed by a <a href="https://lithiumamericas.com/news/news-details/2024/Lithium-Americas-Receives-Conditional-Commitment-for-2.26-Billion-ATVM-Loan-from-the-U.S.-DOE-for-Construction-of-Thacker-Pass/default.aspx">loan commitment</a> of $2.26 billion from the U.S. Department of Energy to finance the construction of the Thacker Pass project.</p>



<p>The rally, however, fizzled out, with negative industry sentiments being dominant. A $275 million equity offering also accelerated the downside. The renewed correction is a good opportunity to accumulate the stock. Considering the Thacker Pass asset potential, LAC stock will likely be a 5-bagger or 10-bagger by 2030.</p>



<p>To put things into perspective, the asset has a mine life of 40 years. Furthermore, Lithium Americas will likely <a href="https://lithiumamericas.com/files/doc_presentation/2024/05/LAC-Corporate-Presentation.pdf">deliver an annual EBITDA</a> of $2 billion once both phases are operational. Therefore, cash flow will be robust after commercialization. With the project financing gap closed, the focus is likely to be on the long-term value creation.</p>



<h2>Albemarle (ALB)</h2>

ALB stock has been higher by 11% in the last six months. I believe further consolidation and a breakout on the upside are likely in the next few quarters.</p>



<p>For Q1 2024, Albemarle <a href="https://s201.q4cdn.com/960975307/files/doc_earnings/2024/q1/earnings-result/Q12024_pressrelease.pdf">reported sales and adjusted EBITDA</a> of $1.4 billion and $291 million, respectively. On a year-on-year basis, sales declined sharply, coupled with margin compression. However, energy storage volume growth offsets the negatives to some extent.</p>



<p>An important note is that Albemarle ended the quarter with a liquidity buffer of $3.7 billion. Further, net-debt-to-adjusted EBITDA was 0.9. Therefore, financial flexibility is high for aggressive investments once lithium recovers.</p>



<p>It&rsquo;s worth noting that Albemarle has <a href="https://s201.q4cdn.com/960975307/files/doc_earnings/2024/q1/presentation/Q12024_presentation.pdf">maintained its</a> guidance for 20% CAGR in lithium sales volume growth through 2027. I, therefore, expect stellar growth and cash flow upside in the coming years once lithium stages a strong recovery.</p>



<h2>Piedmont Lithium (PLL)</h2>

Schneider / Shutterstock.com</div></div><p><strong>Piedmont Lithium</strong> (NASDAQ:<span><a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/pll-stock-quote/"><strong>PLL</strong></a></span>) has been the worst performer among the lithium stocks discussed. PLL stock has plunged by 77% in the last 12 months. The worst is over, and the company is trading at a deep valuation gap.</p>



<p>The asset valuation approach underscores my view. Currently, Piedmont Lithium commands a market valuation of $255 million. The company&rsquo;s Ghana asset has an after-tax net present value of $1.3 billion. Further, the Carolina and Tennessee assets have a <a href="https://piedmontlithium.com/wp-content/uploads/Piedmont-Lithium-Corporate-Presentation_February-2024.pdf">combined after-tax NPV</a> of $4.5 billion.</p>



<p>Investors will wonder why PLL stock has plunged. An obvious reason is the decline in lithium prices. Further, Piedmont would require significant financing to construct the game-changing assets. I expect PLL stock to go ballistic once the company has ample funds through debt-equity or joint venture. That&rsquo;s likely when lithium prices start recovering and investments in lithium projects are renewed.</p>

<p>The battery market has been one of the most dynamic over the last several years. Secular tailwinds guiding this market&rsquo;s rise are the proliferation of consumer electronics products as well as the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs). While the former trend has been in the making for decades now, the latter is a quite recent phenomenon. Broad government support for the promotion of clean energy products and shifting consumer preferences has led to the steady rise of electric vehicles.</p>



<p>However, trouble in the global macro economy has begun to stifle the EV sector broadly. High inflation, which impacts the costs of key EV parts, coupled with elevated global interest rates has sorely impacted the demand for new electric vehicles. In turn, the price for lithium carbonate, the rare earth mineral essential for developing lithium-ion batteries, has plummeted more than 44% over the past 12 months due to oversupply in the market and weak demand from end markets.</p>



<p>These short-term headwinds should not cause investors to overlook the future prospects of the battery market. Wall Street certainly hasn&rsquo;t. Below are 3 <a href="https://investorplace.com/industries/energy/renewable-energy/battery/">battery stocks</a> to buy with &ldquo;strong buy&rdquo; ratings from Wall Street firms.  </p>



<h2>BYD (BYDDY)</h2>

Despite economic turmoil in the world&rsquo;s second-largest economy, brought upon by an ever-ailing real estate crisis, the EV manufacturer has been a bright spot. At the end of last year, BYD delivered more electric vehicles than chief competitor <strong>Tesla</strong> (NASDAQ:<span><a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/tsla-stock-quote/"><strong>TSLA</strong></a></span>), morphing the company into the largest EV manufacturer during that time. First quarter deliveries in 2024 also <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-04-02/chinese-ev-makers-post-strong-showing-in-march-after-slow-start?sref=a6OYFmE3">held up</a> against analyst expectations.</p>



<p>What people don&rsquo;t have often know about BYD is that the global firm started out as a developer of batteries for consumer electronics products. In spite of a major shift, BYD is still a major player in the battery market. Last year, BYD <a href="https://cnevpost.com/2024/02/07/global-ev-battery-market-share-in-2023/">generated</a> 111.4 GWh of power batteries, which was up 58% from 2022. The company carved out 15.8% of the global market share for itself, making it the second-largest battery provider on the planet.</p>



<p>According to Koyfin, BYD has an overwhelming &ldquo;Strong Buy&rdquo; rating from Wall Street analysts. While struggling with EV market headwinds and intense competition in China, BYD&rsquo;s stock has certainly taken a hit, but the long-term prospects remain intact.</p>



<h2>Lithium Americas (LAC)</h2>

The  miner is spin-off from a larger organization. Before October 2023, Lithium Americas consisted of both Argentina and United States-based lithium mining assets. However, since then, the company <a href="https://lithiumamericas.com/investor/laac-separation/default.aspx">split</a> into two independent mining companies, Lithium Americas and <strong>Lithium Argentina</strong> (NYSE:<span><a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/laac-stock-quote/"><strong>LAAC</strong></a></span>), in order to better steam line the companies&rsquo; respective priorities. </p>



<p>Lithium Americas mines its lithium out of the <a href="https://lithiumamericas.com/thacker-pass/overview/default.aspx">Thacker Pass</a> located in the state of Nevada. The construction of the mine had begun towards the end of the first quarter in 2023 and will have a life of at least 40 years. The Thacker Pass is the largest lithium deposit in the United States, and Lithium Americas&rsquo; exposure to it will solidify its role in providing lithium to EV manufacturers such as <strong><a href="https://www.reuters.com/markets/commodities/gm-lithium-americas-develop-thacker-pass-mine-nevada-2023-01-31/">General Motors</a></strong> (NYSE:<span><a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/gm-stock-quote/"><strong>GM</strong></a></span>). </p>



<p>LAC has received two &ldquo;Strong Buy&rdquo; ratings from Wall Street firms and &ldquo;Buy&rdquo; ratings from 6 other firms. </p>



<h2>Ganfeng Lithium Group (GNENF)</h2>

Schneider / Shutterstock.com</div></div><p>The final entry on this list is another China-based firm. <strong>Ganfeng Lithium Group</strong> (OTCMKTS:<span><a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/gnenf-stock-quote/"><strong>GNENF</strong></a></span>) has been able to grow into the largest lithium miner in China and one of the largest in the world. The miner not only participates in getting the lithium out of the ground, but it is also involved in refining, processing, battery manufacturing as well as recycling. Ganfeng&rsquo;s lithium operations span beyond China to Australia, Argentina, Mexico, Mali, and Ireland.</p>



<p>I find the miner&rsquo;s mining project in Argentina to be most intriguing. Ganfeng owns a significant stake in the Cauchari-Olaroz salt-lake project, which is one the largest salt-lake lithium extraction projects globally. The lithium resources in this region <a href="https://www.ganfenglithium.com/new_detail_en/id/56.html">amount to 24.58 million tons</a> of lithium carbonate. The mine has officially been put into operation since 2023, and phase 1 of the project has an earmarked production of around 40,000 tons of lithium carbonate.</p>



<p>Of course, like many lithium miners, Ganfeng has struggled with compressing revenue growth and dwindling profits due to oversupply in the lithium market and waning demand. Lithium prices have experienced a sort of revival since the beginning of 2024. Short-term headwinds in the market should not cause investors to gloss over Ganfeng&rsquo;s long-term opportunities. GNENF has averaged a &ldquo;Buy&rdquo; rating from 30 Wall Street firms. Six have rated it as a &ldquo;Strong Buy.&rdquo;</p>

<p>While all under-$10 stocks may not be worth your money,&nbsp;a few stocks&nbsp;have the potential to hit double digits. But, they may be trading below $10 due to several macroeconomic factors.&nbsp;These stocks are solid buy-and-hold and could double your money if you have the patience. Once the economy improves and a rate cut materializes, you might not get an opportunity to buy these stocks below $10.</p>



<p>If you are&nbsp;on the lookout&nbsp;for stocks under $10 and want solid companies to invest in, here are my three picks. These are industry stalwarts with&nbsp;strong&nbsp;fundamentals, impressive annual earnings guidance and the potential to double your money. Let&rsquo;s dive into them.&nbsp;</p>



<h2>SoFi Technologies (SOFI)</h2>

In fact, it hasn&rsquo;t been able to touch double digits since the beginning of the year. Despite reporting impressive fundamentals in the last two quarters and raising the annual earnings guidance, the stock hasn&rsquo;t been able to pick up pace.&nbsp;</p>



<p>In the&nbsp;<a href="https://investors.sofi.com/financials/quarterly-results/default.aspx" target="_blank">recent earnings report</a>, the net sales stood at $581 million, up 26% year-over-year (<strong>YOY</strong>), and the financial services segment saw a 33% jump.&nbsp;It has seen a strong top line&nbsp;despite the concerns about high interest rates.&nbsp;The financial services segment reported net sales of $151 million. Also, the tech platform reported net sales of $91 million, up 21% YOY.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Since SoFi Technologies relies on lending, this is a concern when it comes to the current macroeconomic environment. Investors are worried about defaults in the long term. However, the management is taking a conservative approach and has said that the lending segment revenue will drop 5% to 8% from the past year.&nbsp;</p>



<p>As revenue from the other segments&nbsp;continue to grow, SOFI will see a solid improvement in the top and bottom lines. The company reported its first-ever profit in the fourth quarter and has been attracting new users at a steady rate. It ended the first quarter with 8.1 million users. For the past two quarters, it has seen a 44% jump in member growth.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Thus, SoFi&nbsp;Technologies is set&nbsp;to have a transitional year ahead&nbsp;and&nbsp;a rate cut could boost its business.&nbsp;The long-term picture looks&nbsp;highly attractive&nbsp;and&nbsp;this is one stock that&nbsp;can double your money by 2025.&nbsp;Buying SOFI stock under $10 is a smart move.&nbsp;</p>



<h2>Lithium Americas (LAC)</h2>

<p>Exchanging hands for $4.50 today, the stock has lost 30%&nbsp;value&nbsp;since the beginning of the year. It is trading much lower than the 52-week high of $23.&nbsp;But, expect strong upside potential once the Thacker Pass project commences. It is the largest lithium project in history,&nbsp;and&nbsp;the company aims to achieve&nbsp;full&nbsp;production by 2028.&nbsp;</p>



<p>As the electric vehicle (<strong>EV</strong>) industry recovers, the demand for lithium will be on the rise. So this becomes the key moment for Lithium Americas to strike. The construction of the project began last year. It has a mine life of 40 years and an after-tax <a href="https://lithiumamericas.com/files/doc_presentation/2023/10/03/LAC-NewCo-Presentation-Oct2023.pdf">net present value of $5.7 billion</a>. Besides Thacker Pass, Lithium Americas has received a&nbsp;<a href="https://investor.gm.com/news-releases/news-release-details/gm-and-lithium-americas-develop-us-sourced-lithium-production" target="_blank">$650 million investment</a>&nbsp;from &nbsp;<strong>General Motors&nbsp;</strong>(NYSE:<span><a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/gm-stock-quote/"><strong>GM</strong></a></span>) for the Thacker Pass mine.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Also, the company has received a $2.26 billion loan from the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.energy.gov/lpo/articles/lpo-announces-conditional-commitment-lithium-americas-corp-help-finance-construction" target="_blank">U.S. Department of Energy</a>&nbsp;to help finance the construction of a Nevada processing plant. LAC stock&nbsp;is beaten down&nbsp;today. But&nbsp;it&nbsp;owns the hottest asset right now&nbsp;and&nbsp;the long-term picture looks attractive.&nbsp;</p>



<p>If you&nbsp;have the patience to&nbsp;hold the stock until the Thacker Pass Project commences production, this is one stock to buy and hold. The dip is the perfect time to load up on the stock&nbsp;which&nbsp;can double your money.&nbsp;</p>



<h2>Kinross Gold Corporation (KGC)</h2>

So companies like <strong>Kinross Gold</strong>&nbsp;(NYSE:<span><a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/kgc-stock-quote/"><strong>KGC</strong></a></span>) are set&nbsp;to hit the jackpot.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Recently, the gold miner&nbsp;reported results&nbsp;and beat expectations. It <a href="https://www.kinross.com/news-and-investors/news-releases/press-release-details/2023/Kinross-reports-2023-first-quarter-results/default.aspx">reported a revenue of $1.08 billion</a>, and the EPS stood at 10 cents.&nbsp;The company saw a 23% YOY increase in&nbsp;the&nbsp;production&nbsp;of gold,&nbsp;and&nbsp;the operating income came in at $259 million.&nbsp;</p>



<p>It ended March with a cash balance of $471.0 million.&nbsp;Many anticipate gold prices&nbsp;to&nbsp;continue the upward rally,&nbsp;and&nbsp;this&nbsp;will benefit Kinross significantly.&nbsp;Trading at $7.59, KGC stock is up 28% YTD and 40% in the last 12 months. Also, it has a dividend yield of 1.58%. Considering the liquidity, the company&nbsp;has the potential to&nbsp;increase dividends in the coming years.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Finally, Kinross Gold Corporation expects the gold production to hit 2.1 million ounces&nbsp;in the year. <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/scotiabank-sticks-to-their-buy-rating-for-kinross-gold-kgc-1033348518">Scotiabank</a>&nbsp;has a price target of $8 for the stock with a buy rating,&nbsp;while&nbsp;Cormark has a market outperform rating,&nbsp;and&nbsp;National Bank has a buy rating.&nbsp;</p>
