With October fast approaching, market analysts are turning their attention to the holiday shopping season to look for early indications of which trends will be the most popular among consumers this year. The latest data from TickerTags indicates that leather could be a big trend in the fashion world this holiday season.
TickerTags monitors social media sites to identify trends by searching for words or phrases that appear together in social media content, such as tweets.

Year-to-date in 2016, year-over-year social media mentions of “leather,” “suede,” “genuine leather” and “patent leather” are up 23 percent, 91 percent, 162 percent and 169 percent, respectively. So far in Q3, that trend toward leather, particularly genuine leather, has continued. Q3 mentions of the keywords mentioned above are up between 17 and 283 percent year-over-year.
If the trend continues through the end of the year, leather manufacturers and wholesale leather dealers like Tandy Leather Factory, Inc. TLF could be in for a very happy holiday season.
While social media conversations are not directly tied to sales, they are a great early indicator of which products and styles are on consumers’ minds.
So far this year, Tandy’s share price has lagged the S&P 500, gaining just 3.2 percent.
