EXCLUSIVE: Netflix Customers Excited For Original Movies, 'Squid Game,' 'Stranger Things,' NFL: 60% Say This Tops 2025 Must-Watch List

Netflix Inc NFLX ended 2024 with over 300 million paid subscribers, ranking as one of the most-watched platforms around the world.

A new Benzinga reader survey shows that customers are keeping their plans and are excited for a strong 2025 content lineup.

What Happened: Netflix no longer breaks out its subscriber totals in quarterly results. This could put an emphasis on the company's content slate as investors and analysts predict what new shows, movies and live content could mean for subscriber totals and for revenue.

In 2025, Netflix has new seasons of some of its biggest recent hits, including a fifth and final season of "Stranger Things," a third and final season of "Squid Game" and a highly anticipated second season of "Wednesday."

These new shows, along with others and original movies, could keep Netflix subscribers from cancelling their streaming plans.

Benzinga recently asked readers about their Netflix subscriptions.

"Netflix recently reported first-quarter financial results. Which describes you best for 2025 as a Netflix customer?" Benzinga asked.

Here are the results:

  • I don't plan on cancelling my Netflix account in 2025: 49%
  • Was not a Netflix subscriber in 2025: 24%
  • I might cancel my Netflix plan in 2025 based on price increases: 11%
  • I already cancelled my Netflix account in 2025: 9%
  • I might cancel my Netflix plan in 2025 based on the content library: 7%

The poll shows that a near majority of readers don't plan on cancelling their Netflix subscription in 2025, even with a recent price increase.

In the poll, nearly a fourth of readers say they do not subscribe to Netflix, which could indicate some potential monetization opportunities for the streaming giant as they offer new content like live sports and grow deeper into video games and other ventures.

Netflix Content Library: In the initial poll, 7% say they might cancel their Netflix plan based on the content library, which was the lowest vote getter.

Content has been incredibly important for Netflix over the years and one of the key reasons why they are a leader in the streaming space. Netflix started with acquired content from others before branching out into original content that includes shows and movies.

Netflix could have a perfect storm in 2025 with new seasons of "Stranger Things," "Squid Game" and "Wednesday" for the first time, three of the company's biggest hits of all time.

The streamer has also pushed deeper into live sports with its WWE partnership, the rights to two NFL games on Christmas Day and more. To round out content, Netflix also releases original movies every month with hits such as "Carry On" and "Hit Man" among the company's 2024 hits.

Benzinga asked readers which content is most important for 2025.

"Which Netflix 2025 content are you most excited about (of the following options)?" Benzinga asked.

  • Netflix Original Movies: 60%
  • "Wednesday" Season 2: 17%
  • "Stranger Things" Season 5: 11%
  • "Squid Game" Season 3: 8%
  • NFL Games/Live Sports content: 4%

The poll found Netflix original movies are the content readers are most excited for in 2025, which might be a surprise given the return of three hit shows. Of the hit shows, "Wednesday" ranked highest at 17%, ahead of the final seasons of "Stranger Things" and "Squid Game."

Ranking last were NFL games and live sports, which could show how Netflix's current strategy of minimal sports content is the big bet and the company doesn't need full seasons of sports content.

The company said its priorities for 2025 include improving the core business with more series and films, developing new initiatives like live programming and games and sustaining healthy growth.

“We maintain a leadership position in engagement, revenue and profit. We’re focused on improving all aspects of our service and, combined with the return in 2025 of our biggest shows (‘Squid Game,’ ‘Wednesday’ and ‘Stranger Things’), we’re optimistic heading into the new year,” the company said.
