iPhone Sales Were Astonishing, But What About The iPad And Macs?

Apple Inc. AAPL posted yet another record quarter backed by the 55 percent growth in iPhone sales. However, while the iPhones took all the limelight, other products like iPad and PCs got a little overshadowed in the result.

Dan Costa, Editor-in-Chief of PC Magazine, was on CNBC recently to discuss the sales of Apple products other than the iPhone.

Cannibalization Of The iPad

“With the 6-inch iPhone and iPhone 6 Plus they have got a phablet for the first time and this was always the concern as in [wouldn’t it] eat into iPad sales,”Costa said. “I think that’s definitely happening, but the other problem is that everybody that wants an iPad pretty much already has one. I have got two iPads right now.”

He continued, “One is 3 years old, one is 2 years old. I would love to upgrade to new version just because I am a gadget guy and its thinner and it’s sexier, but I mean ultimately, I just don’t see the reason to do it. No one needs a faster iPad. So, the upgrade cycle on the iPad is just a lot longer and then some of these other devices are definitely longer than phones.”

The Best Part Of The Business

Costa was asked about the growth Apple is showing in the PCs market. He replied, “The laptop and desktop market has really got a bad rep. They have been in decline for a number of years, but they are still the work horses of information economy.”

“Those categories aren’t going anywhere and although most vendors are seeing declines, Apple is actually picking up ground here. They have got almost 13 percent of the U.S. PC market, the PCs, Laptop and desktops. That’s a nice piece of the business and it’s also the best part of the business,” Costa concluded.
