Is there a fundamental shift in retail going on? According to CNBC's Courtney Reagan, there most certainly is.
Here's what you need to know.
Reagan argued that a shift in consumer spending habits continues to shape the retail landscape. While this change hasn't happened overnight – and won't – it is an organic trend.
According to Reagan, some of the shifts in spending behavior trace their roots to the financial crisis, while others are a result of a "24/7 always online culture." Moreover, consumers at every income level are questioning their spending habits and asking if a purchase is "worth the price." In fact, among the mid- and higher-level retailers, the answer to this question is increasingly becoming "no."
Reagan continued that "fast fashion" retailers such as H&M, Zara, Forever 21 are gaining market share due to their superior value. Off-price stores, such as TJX Companies Inc TJX are also a beneficiary of this trend.
In terms of product categories, "athleisure" sales remain strong, along with the beauty category due to the increasing popularity of selfies and sharing pictures on social media.
