Disney Expands Streaming Movie Service To Google's Android

Walt Disney Co DIS expanded its streaming movie service to Android devices after initially restricting the system to Apple Inc.'s AAPL operating system.

The Android version of Disney Movies Anywhere launched Monday on Google Inc's GOOGL online store. Terms of the deal with Google weren't disclosed.

Disney first plugged in the system in February when it was available exclusively through Apple's iTunes for iOS devices.

"We didn't want to launch something on Android that would make it look like a second-class citizen," Jamie Voris, chief technology officer at Walt Disney Studios, told the Los Angeles Times. "The Android platform is clearly the most widely distributed platform in the world."

Android has an 80 percent market share in mobile operating systems, compared with Apple's iOS with 15 percent, according to IDC.

Shares of Google and Apple were down less then 1 percent Tuesday afternoon; Disney, which is scheduled to report earnings on Thursday, was down 1.8 percent.
