The HERO4 Session: GoPro's Newest, And Smallest, Camera

Shares of
GoPro IncGPRO
were trading lower by more than 3 percent Monday despite the company's
announcement
of its new camera, the HERO4 Session. GoPro's newest camera combines an "ultra-compact waterproof design with easy one-button control for simple yet powerful life-capture solution." The camera is 50 percent smaller and 40 percent lighter than its previous HERO4 Black and Silver cameras. HERO4 Session will still be compatible with existing GoPro mounts and will retail for $399.99 MSRP at GoPro retailers and on GoPro.com as of July 12. HERO4 Session captures video in 1080p60, 720p100 and 1440p30 resolution while the camera features an eight megapixel resolution in Single, Burst and Time Lapse modes. "With HERO4 Session, we challenged ourselves to produce the smallest, lightest, most convenient GoPropossible," said Nicholas Woodman, GoPro founder and CEO in the press release. "HERO4 Session combines the best of our engineering and user-experience know-how to deliver our most convenient life-capture solution, yet." Woodman adds, "I'm so excited about the launch of HERO4 Session because now I can finally use mine in public!" Shares traded recently at $49.64, down 4.08 percent. Commenting on the new device,
The Verge's Sean O'Kane
noted that the camera is "extremely simple to use" as it only has two buttons. "One of the biggest benefits of the Session's small size is how much harder it is to notice, no matter where you mount it," the product review article stated. "GoPro has also slimmed down its cameras over the years — the Hero 4 Black and Silver, in particular, are very light and small — but when you snap them into a housing and mount them to a helmet or to your wrist, you definitely still feel them when you're moving around." The review concluded that "there's a lot to love" about the new camera, including its convenient size and strongest battery out of all GoPro models. However, the new camera isn't recommended for first time action camera buyers, rather the author recommends the Hero 4 Silver which is "more robust" (and similarly priced) with a built-in touchscreen LCD screen and higher resolution stills.
