Tim Cook Says Apple TV Will Be Available Next Week; Touts 15 Million Apple Music Subs

  • Apple Inc. AAPL CEO Tim Cook confirmed the company will begin taking orders for the new Apple TV on Monday.
  • Speaking at a WSJD Live event, Cook said that the new devices will begin shipping by the end of next week.
  • Cook also said that Apple Music has 15 million users.

Apple saw the strongest opening weekend launch for any iPhone device when it began selling the 6s and 6s Plus back in September. The company is now hoping that its momentum can continue ahead of the new Apple TV launch.

Speaking at WSJDLive 2015, CEO Tim Cook said that the company will begin taking orders for the new TV set box next Monday and will be shipped out to consumers by the end of the week.

The new box comes with a more powerful A8 processor, a touchpad remote and ability to interact with Siri. In addition, consumers will have access to the App Store for third-party applications.

Cook hinted that the new box will serve as the "foundation" for a new kind of TV experience.

15 Million Subscribers

Separately, Cook said that Apple Music now boasts 15 million subscribers, 6.5 million of which are paying subscribers and 8.5 million customers are taking advantage of a three-month trial.

Apple Music launched at the end of June. By August, the service attracted 11 million users who were on the trial version.

However, The Wall Street Journal noted that Spotify's service has 75 million active users and 20 million subscribers. Cook said that Apple Music stands out against its peers as "people love the human curation" aspect of Apple's streaming music service.
