Uber, the popular ride sharing platform, announced on Wednesday that Arianna Huffington will join its board of directors.
Huffington is the founder and editor-in-chief of the Huffington Post. Uber's CEO Travis Kalanick stated that he is friends with the media mogul who "believes deeply in our mission" of providing "transportation as reliable as running water, everywhere for everyone."
Kalanick recalled a story involving Huffington who used Uber's transportation service to arrange a car ride for her former sister-in-law's daughter, Lindsay, who was stuck in Brooklyn during a snowstorm.
"Tell Lindsay to look outside her window—there will be a car waiting for her in five minutes," Uber's CEO quoted Huffington as saying at a speech she delivered at an Uber staff event last fall.
The crowd "roared" when Huffington told that story at the Uber event. She followed up and said, "For the first time in my life, I felt like a genuine Greek goddess."
"Arianna embodies the type of optimistic leadership we need as Uber continues to grow," Kalanick added. "Her guidance has been invaluable to me personally over the years, and I know that in this new role she'll help take Uber to the next level."
