A worse-than-expected University of Michigan May consumer report halted stock gains on Friday, sparking worries about a potential decline in consumer health amid<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/24/05/38762249/consumer-sentiment-falls-in-may-inflation-expectations-strongly-exceed-feds-2-goal-they-now-perc"> perceived rising price pressures.</a>
The report disclosed that both near-term and long-term inflation expectations have surged beyond projections this month, causing the broader consumer gauge to hit its lowest levels in six months.
&#8220;If spending slows down and inflation increases, we'll get the opposite of the Goldilocks scenario that many were hoping for, and the Fed will be in an especially difficult position of choosing between accommodating a slowing economy and fighting increasing inflation expectations,&#8221; said Chris Zaccarelli, chief investment officer for Independent Advisor Alliance. 
Echoing this view, Jeffrey Roach, chief economist for LPL Financial, sees rising risks of stagflation, a concern that could unsettle markets. 
At 12:05 p.m. trading in New York, the S&amp;P 500 was 0.1% lower, but it was firmly up by 1.6% for the week, poised to secure a third consecutive week of gains after three of losses.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average was a tad higher, battling to secure the eight straight session of gains, the longest positive streak since December 2023. Tech stocks were flat. Small caps were the underperformers, with the iShares Russell 2000 ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IWM#NYSE">IWM</a>) down 0.9%. 
The rising inflation perceptions in the consumer survey rescued the dollar, which eyes a positive weekly close, after two negative ones. 
Treasury yields also inched higher by about 4 basis points across all maturities. The 10-year benchmark hit 4.5%.
Gold surged to $2,385/oz, with the SPDR Gold Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GLD#NYSE">GLD</a>) up 0.8%. 
The dismal consumer sentiment data sharply weighed on Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) with the largest cryptocurrency dropping over 4% from $63,000 to below $60,500 following the report.

Jobless benefits rose from 209,000 to 231,000 in the week ending May 4, surpassing market expectations of 210,000 and reaching the highest<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/24/05/38734795/unemployment-claims-surge-more-than-expected-hit-8-month-peak-dollar-falls-as-traders-bet-on-rat"> level in eight months. </a>
Consequently, the U.S. dollar Index (DXY), tracked by the Invesco DB USD Index Bullish Fund ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UUP#NYSE">UUP</a>), declined by 0.2% in reaction to the data, as market participants slightly increased bets on a September Fed cut. 
The S&amp;P 500 index inched up by 0.1%, following Wednesday&#8217;s flat close, while blue chips of the Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 0.4%, aiming for their seventh consecutive day of gains, the longest streak since December 2023.

Stocks Rebound As Rising Jobless Claims Sustain Rate-Cut Hopes, Dollar Falls, Gold Rallies: What's Driving Markets Thursday?

Wall Street experienced a quiet session during morning trading on Tuesday, influenced by a lack of significant economic data and minimal updates on earnings from <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/money/best-large-cap-stocks">major large-cap companies.</a>
Traders largely disregarded the latest hawkish comments from Minneapolis Fed President Neel Kashkari, who noted progress on inflation seen in the latter half of 2023 had stalled and mentioned the Federal Reserve might raise rates if inflation becomes persistent. 
Kashkari also revealed he initially predicted two rate cuts for the year, but now anticipated possibly maintaining two, or reducing to one or none by the June Summary of Economic Projections.
The S&amp;P 500 saw a modest increase of 0.2% around midday in New York, with similar gains in the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 and the Dow Jones, all of which are poised for their fourth consecutive session of gains. The iShares Russell 2000 ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IWM#NYSE">IWM</a>), representing small caps, performed notably well, rising 0.8%.
Treasury yields declined slightly by about 6 basis points across various maturities from 5 to 30 years, with the 10-year benchmark decreasing to 4.4%, marking a fifth consecutive day of declines. This led to a continued rally in bonds, exemplified by a 1.1% increase in the iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TLT#NASDAQ">TLT</a>).
In corporate news, chipmaker Palantir Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PLTR#NASDAQ">PLTR</a>) saw its shares drop over 13% following weaker-than-expected guidance. Walt Disney Co (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DIS#NYSE">DIS</a>) also fell sharply by over 10%, setting it on course for its worst performance day since November 2022.
In the cryptocurrency and precious metals markets, Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) remained stable at $63,800, while both gold and silver declined by 0.5%

Indexes are higher on continued strength after soft jobs data last week raised rate cut hopes.

The stock market is poised to mark a third consecutive session of gains, with major indices all trading in the green during midday trading in New York on Monday, as traders continue to react positively to quarterly earnings and the Federal Reserve&#8217;s unexpectedly dovish stance <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/24/05/38584705/federal-reserve-takes-cautious-stand-on-inflation-powell-signals-preference-for-r">in its latest meeting.</a>
For Q1 2024, 80% of S&amp;P 500 companies have disclosed actual results, with over three quarters of them surpassing EPS estimates and 61% exceeding revenue estimates, according to FactSet.
The S&amp;P 500 rose by 0.4%, with the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 showing a similar daily surge. Small caps, as measured by the iShares Russell 2000 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IWM#NYSE">IWM</a>), outperformed large caps, rising by 1.2%.
Palantir Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PLTR#NASDAQ">PLTR</a>) surged over 6% ahead of its Q1 results, set to be released after the market closes. The broader chipmaker industry, as tracked by the iShares Semiconductor ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SOXX#NYSE">SOXX</a>), rose 1.7%, showing solid gains. 
Commodities performed strongly overall, with natural gas prices surging nearly 6% to a 4-month high. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) light crude oil rose by 1%, on track to break a 5-day losing streak. 
Crude oil faced notable volatility around 12:47 EDT as gains were initially trimmed on news of Hamas accepting a ceasefire proposal, but then it partially recovered those losses after Israeli Forces stated that Hamas had agreed to a modified version not accepted by Israel.
Gold and silver also saw robust demand, with gold up over 0.7% and silver rallying about 3%.
Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) softened 0.8%, with prices retracing after testing the 50-day moving average resistance at $65,500-$65,900 levels.

A weaker-than-expected jobs report sparked a widespread market rally in the last session of the week, as traders increased expectations on potential <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/interest-rates">interest rate cuts later this year</a>.
In April, nonfarm payrolls expanded by 175,000 jobs, marking a significant slowdown from March&#8217;s robust pace of 315,000 and notably falling short <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/24/05/38612469/job-market-cools-in-april-payrolls-miss-forecasts-wages-rise-less-than-expected">of the anticipated 238,000</a>.
Unexpectedly, the unemployment rate edged higher, while average hourly earnings softened more than forecasted, both indicating a slowdown in momentum within the labor market.
On a separate note, the latest surveys on service sector activity revealed an unexpected contraction in April, as reported by <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/24/05/38616058/services-sector-activity-contracts-business-is-slowing-as-stocks-bonds-trim-gains">the Institute for Supply Management.</a>
Chicago Fed President Austan Goolsbee welcomed results from the jobs report, emphasizing that it boosts confidence that the economy is not overheating and inflation is not reaccelerating. 
The S&amp;P 500 surged by 1.2%, pushing the overall weekly performance into positive territory. The Nasdaq 100 experienced a remarkable 2% surge, marking its most robust performance in over two months. Among tech giants, Apple Inc. made headlines, rising nearly 7% following the announcement of a record-breaking $110-billion buyback program. The Cupertino, California-based company also beat both earnings and revenue estimates last quarter. 
Blue chips and small-cap stocks also rose, with the iShares Russell 2000 ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IWM#NYSE">IWM</a>) up by 0.9%.
Yields experienced a broad decline, with the two-year Treasury yield now settling at 4.8% after reaching a peak of 5.05% earlier in the week. 
The overall optimistic risk sentiment spurred gains in more speculative areas of the market, leading to a rise in cryptocurrencies across the board. Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) surged by 4.8%, surpassing the $61,000 mark.

Stocks Rally As Jobs Report Rekindles Rate Cut Hopes, Apple Rockets, Bitcoin Soars Above $61,000: What's Driving Markets Friday?

Indexes are higher after the Fed on Wednesday left rates unchanged. Fed Chair Powell said it is unlikely that the next policy rate move would be a rate hike.

U.S. stock markets surged during Thursday&#8217;s midday trading session in New York, with major averages all showing gains.
Trader sentiment rebounded thanks to positive signals from corporate earnings and relief after Fed Chair Jerome Powell dismissed the possibility of a rate hike <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/24/05/38584705/federal-reserve-takes-cautious-stand-on-inflation-powell-signals-preference-for-r">during Wednesday&#8217;s press conference.</a>
The S&amp;P 500 inched 0.3% up at 12:30 p.m. ET, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 slightly outperformed, up 0.6%. Semiconductors stood out as a bright spot, buoyed by <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-ratings/analyst-color/24/05/38588728/5-qualcomm-analysts-highlight-q2-results-q3-guidance-solid-beat-and-raise-amid-carn">robust quarterly results and optimistic guidance</a> from Qualcomm Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QCOM#NASDAQ">QCOM</a>). Small caps fared better than large caps, with the iShares Russell 2000 ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IWM#NYSE">IWM</a>) up 1%. 
Treasury yields moved slightly lower after Wednesday&#8217;s Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting indicating reduced fears on potential upward moves in interest rates. The policy-sensitive 2-year yield fell to 4.9%, after touching 5.05% on Wednesday. 
Commodities slid, with gold dropping by 0.8% and West Texas Intermediate (WTI) light crude declining by 0.5% to $78 a barrel, poised to close at its lowest level since Mar. 13, 2024.
Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) slightly rebounded to $59,000 after tumbling to as low as $56,500 Wednesday.

The forthcoming Federal Open Market Committee statement is anticipated to maintain interest rates where they are and possibly unveil a reduction in the Fed&#8217;s balance sheet runoff from $60 billion to $30 billion monthly. Fed Chair Jerome Powell&#8216;s press conference is at 2:30 p.m. ET.
The S&amp;P 500 inched 0.2% lower, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 underperformed, down 0.6%. Blue chips managed to avoid losses and showcased a 0.3% rise. 
Aside from Fed policy, earnings remain a key driver of market sentiment, particularly as chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMD#NASDAQ">AMD</a>) offered less optimistic second-quarter guidance than expected. This news led to a nearly 10% drop in its share price. In sympathy, the broader industry saw a decline, with heavyweight Nvidia Corp. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>) also experiencing a more than 5% decrease in its shares.

Taking a broader look at the stock market, the S&amp;P 500 Index, represented by the SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>), finished April on a downturn, declining by approximately 3%. This marks the end of a five-month streak of gains.
Similarly, the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100, tracked by the Invesco QQQ Trust (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QQQ#NASDAQ">QQQ</a>), experienced a 3.5% decline.
Among large-cap indices, blue-chip stocks showed slight underperformance, with the SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DIA#NYSE">DIA</a>) slipping by 4.5%.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Performance Of Sector ETFs In April 2024</h2>
At the sector level, only the utilities sector managed to avoid losses for the month, rising by 2.1%.
The largest stock contributors to the utilities&#8217; performance in April are NextEra Energy, Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NEE#NYSE">NEE</a>), The Southern Company (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SO#NYSE">SO</a>), Dominion Energy, Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/D#NYSE">D</a>) and NRG Energy (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NRG#NYSE">NRG</a>) which showed monthly gains between 4% and 8%. 
Energy stocks remained broadly stable, while the other nine S&amp;P 500&#8217;s sectors showcased losses.
Real estate experienced the worst performance, down by over 7%, dragged down by its high sensitivity to interest rates, as Treasury yields increase across the board during the month. 
Following real estate, the technology and healthcare sectors also showed poor performance in April.

Based on the industry ETF list provided by BlackRock Inc.&#8217;s (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BLK#NYSE">BLK</a>) iShares, only five out of the 25 industries managed to report gains in April. Among them, miners did well across the board, with silver, copper, and gold mining stocks reporting robust gains. 
Standout contributors to the mining industry&#8217;s outperformance in April were Pan American Silver Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PAAS#NYSE">PAAS</a>), up over 20%, Newmont Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NEM#NYSE">NEM</a>), up 14%, Anglo American plc (OTCPK: AAUKF), up over 40%
Energy producers also managed to end the month in the green.
On the bottom side of the industry rankings, homebuilders, transportation, biotech stocks, digital infrastructure and real estate all report losses between 7% and 9.6% in April.

April Showers On Wall Street:  Miners, Utilities Emerge As Bright Spots In Gloomy Market

The U.S. stock market broke a streak of five consecutive months of gains in April, reigniting concerns about the impact of rising inflationary pressures and the potential for a prolonged restrictive monetary policy <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/interest-rates">by the Federal Reserve.</a>
Despite positive signals from first-quarterearnings reports, all major U.S. indices ended the month in negative territory as macroeconomic fears hit risk sentiment.
The S&amp;P 500, as tracked by the SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>), closed 4% lower, snapping a five-month winning streak and marking its worst performance since September 2023. 
The tech-heavy Nasdaq 100, monitored through the Invesco QQQ Trust (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QQQ#NASDAQ">QQQ</a>) witnessed a 4.4% decline for the month, similarly snapping a five-month positive streak and hitting the worst monthly return since September 2023. 
Blue chip stocks in the Dow Jones, as tracked by the SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DIA#NYSE">DIA</a>), fell 4.9% on the month, marking its lowest performance since September 2022.

<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Inflation Fears Overshadow Positive Earnings Trends</h1>
With nearly half of S&amp;P 500 companies reporting first-quarter 2024 results, 77% of companies revealed a positive EPS surprise, and 60% reported a positive revenue surprise.
However, March&#8217;s inflation reports delivered a stark reality check to investors. 
The latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics showed a surge in price pressures from 3.2% year-on-year in February to 3.5% in March 2024, surpassing forecasts <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/commodities/24/04/38181302/inflation-rises-more-than-expected-to-3-5-in-march-derails-june-rate-cut-hopes">of a 3.4% increase.</a>
Another blow came from the Bureau of Economic Analysis&#8217; Personal Consumption Expenditure (PCE) price index report, the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/macro-notification/24/04/38458581/feds-key-inflation-indicator-hits-2-8-dashes-rate-cut-hopes-traders-on-alert">Fed&#8217;s preferred inflation gauge. </a>
Annual PCE inflation rose from 2.5% in February 2024 to 2.7% year-on-year in March, exceeding forecasts of a 2.6% increase. Additionally, core PCE inflation, which excludes energy and food items, surpassed predictions (2.8% vs. 2.6%).
The policy-sensitive 2-year Treasury yields closed the month above the 5% mark, reaching the highest levels since Nov. 13, 2023.

S&P 500, Nasdaq 100 Snap 5-Month Winning Streak In April As Inflation Reality Check Hits Bullish Sentiment

Benzinga Closing Bell Update: Stocks Fall Following Upbeat Wage Data, Dollar Rises, Oil Drops On Middle East Peace Hopes

Major indexes are lower following earlier economic data, with weakness in Caterpillar shares also pressuring the Dow. Investors also await the upcoming Fed decision.

Investor apprehension grips Wall Street with major indices showing midday losses on Tuesday in New York trading, ahead of the Federal Reserve&#8217;s potentially hawkish <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/macro-notification/24/04/38526201/is-hawkish-shift-on-inflation-imminent-wall-street-analysts-traders-brace-for-fed-impa">pivot in Wednesday&#8217;s meeting. </a>
The S&amp;P 500 retraced 0.9% after a 2-day positive streak, with the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 slightly underperforming, down 1.1%. Small caps suffered larger losses, with the iShares Russell 2000 ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IWM#NYSE">IWM</a>) down 1.5%. 
The stock market faced renewed pressure as economic data revealed a decline in consumer confidence and persistent wage pressures, putting further pressures on the Federal Reserve. 
The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported a 1.2% increase in the employment cost index for the first quarter of 2024, surpassing market expectations of 1% growth and accelerating from the previous three-month period&#8217;s 0.9% rise. In April, the Conference Board consumer confidence index dropped from 103.1 to 97 points, falling short of forecasts for a rise to 104.
Bonds provided little refuge to investors as yields surged in response to comments from U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, who voiced concerns about the deficit trajectory and proposed substantial measures to address budgetary gaps.
Yields on the 2-year Treasury note breached the psychological 5% threshold, aiming for the highest close since mid-November 2023. The U.S. dollar index (DXY), as tracked Invesco DB USD Index Bullish Fund ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UUP#NYSE">UUP</a>), rose 0.6%. 
Gold tumbled 1.7%, pressured by higher yields and stronger greenback. Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) plummeted over 5%, on track for its worst daily performance in four weeks amid weak sentiment on cryptocurrencies.

The&nbsp;SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust&nbsp;(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>) fell 0.9% to $505.30, the&nbsp;SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DIA#NYSE">DIA</a>) fell 1.1% to $379.75 and the tech-heavy&nbsp;Invesco QQQ Trust&nbsp;(NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QQQ#NASDAQ">QQQ</a>) fell 1.1% to $428.01, according to&nbsp;<a href="https://pro.benzinga.com/dashboard">Benzinga Pro data</a>.&nbsp;
Sector-wise, the Utilities Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLU#NYSE">XLU</a>) outperformed, up 0.1%, marking the sole positive performance among the eleven S&amp;P 500 sectors. The Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLE#NYSE">XLE</a>) was the major laggard, down 2.1%.
<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Tuesday&#8217;s Stock Movers</h1>

<li>Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) fell 5%, following a 15% surge Monday on the heels of news potentially clearing the full self-driving service in China. Goldman Sachs tempered some of the excitement in <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-ratings/analyst-color/24/04/38519395/goldman-sachs-tempers-investor-excitement-on-tesla-self-driving-not-yet-an-eyes-off">a note on Tuesday. </a></li>
<li>Eli Lilly Company (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LLY#NYSE">LLY</a>) rose 4.6%, its strongest one-day gain since early February, as the pharmaceutical giant hiked 2024 revenue forecast. </li>
<li>Other stocks reacting to earnings were Coca-Cola Company (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/KO#NYSE">KO</a>), down 0.5%; McDonald&#8217;s Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MCD#NYSE">MCD</a>), down 0.2%; Eaton Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ETN#NYSE">ETN</a>), down 3%; Marathon Petroleum Corp.
