U.S. stock markets surged during Thursday&#8217;s midday trading session in New York, with major averages all showing gains.
Trader sentiment rebounded thanks to positive signals from corporate earnings and relief after Fed Chair Jerome Powell dismissed the possibility of a rate hike <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/24/05/38584705/federal-reserve-takes-cautious-stand-on-inflation-powell-signals-preference-for-r">during Wednesday&#8217;s press conference.</a>
The S&amp;P 500 inched 0.3% up at 12:30 p.m. ET, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 slightly outperformed, up 0.6%. Semiconductors stood out as a bright spot, buoyed by <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-ratings/analyst-color/24/05/38588728/5-qualcomm-analysts-highlight-q2-results-q3-guidance-solid-beat-and-raise-amid-carn">robust quarterly results and optimistic guidance</a> from Qualcomm Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QCOM#NASDAQ">QCOM</a>). The iShares Semiconductor ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SOXX#NYSE">SOXX</a>) rose 1.2%, after plummeting 3.4% Wednesday. 
Small caps fared better than large caps, with the iShares Russell 2000 ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IWM#NYSE">IWM</a>) up 1%. 
Treasury yields moved slightly lower after Wednesday&#8217;s Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting indicating reduced fears on potential upward moves in interest rates. The policy-sensitive 2-year yield fell to 4.9%, after touching 5.05% on Wednesday. 
Commodities slid, with gold dropping by 0.8% and West Texas Intermediate (WTI) light crude declining by 0.5% to $78 a barrel, poised to close at its lowest level since Mar. 13, 2024.
Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) slightly rebounded to $59,000 after tumbling to as low as $56,500 Wednesday.

Sector-wise, the Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLK#NYSE">XLK</a>) outperformed, up 0.7%, followed by the Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLP#NYSE">XLP</a>), up 0.6%. The Materials Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLB#NYSE">XLB</a>) was the major laggard, down 1%.

Indexes Volatile Following Decision To Leave Rates Unchanged

As April comes to a close, it&#8217;s time to compile the rankings for the top-performing sector and industry exchange-traded <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/etfs">funds of the month.</a>
Taking a broader look at the stock market, the S&amp;P 500 Index, represented by the SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>), finished April on a downturn, declining by approximately 3%. This marks the end of a five-month streak of gains.
Similarly, the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100, tracked by the Invesco QQQ Trust (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QQQ#NASDAQ">QQQ</a>), experienced a 3.5% decline.
Among large-cap indices, blue-chip stocks showed slight underperformance, with the SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DIA#NYSE">DIA</a>) slipping by 4.5%.
Small-cap stocks, represented by the iShares Russell 2000 ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IWM#NYSE">IWM</a>), plummeted by over 6%, marking their worst performance since October 2023.
Overall, it has been a challenging month for the stock market, primarily due to inflation surprises surpassing expectations. This has led to a recalibration of market expectations regarding potential Federal Reserve rate cuts.
Additionally, complex global geopolitical tensions have emerged, notably between Israel and Iran, alongside the ongoing issue in the Gaza Strip.
May is anticipated to start with a crucial event as investors await the Federal Reserve Open Market Committee <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/macro-notification/24/04/38526201/is-hawkish-shift-on-inflation-imminent-wall-street-analysts-traders-brace-for-fed-impa">(FOMC) meeting on Wednesday. </a>
While no interest rate changes are expected, all eyes will be on Fed Chair Jerome Powell&#8216;s remarks to assess the Fed&#8217;s stance in response to recent inflation surprises.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Performance Of Sector ETFs In April 2024</h2>
At the sector level, only the utilities sector managed to avoid losses for the month, rising by 2.1%.
The largest stock contributors to the utilities&#8217; performance in April are NextEra Energy, Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NEE#NYSE">NEE</a>), The Southern Company (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SO#NYSE">SO</a>), Dominion Energy, Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/D#NYSE">D</a>) and NRG Energy (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NRG#NYSE">NRG</a>) which showed monthly gains between 4% and 8%. 
Energy stocks remained broadly stable, while the other nine S&amp;P 500&#8217;s sectors showcased losses.
Real estate experienced the worst performance, down by over 7%, dragged down by its high sensitivity to interest rates, as Treasury yields increase across the board during the month. 
Following real estate, the technology and healthcare sectors also showed poor performance in April.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Performance Of Industry ETFs In April 2024</h2>
Based on the industry ETF list provided by BlackRock Inc.&#8217;s (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BLK#NYSE">BLK</a>) iShares, only five out of the 25 industries managed to report gains in April. Among them, miners did well across the board, with silver, copper, and gold mining stocks reporting robust gains. 
Standout contributors to the mining industry&#8217;s outperformance in April were Pan American Silver Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PAAS#NYSE">PAAS</a>), up over 20%, Newmont Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NEM#NYSE">NEM</a>), up 14%, Anglo American plc (OTCPK: AAUKF), up over 40%
Energy producers also managed to end the month in the green.
On the bottom side of the industry rankings, homebuilders, transportation, biotech stocks, digital infrastructure and real estate all report losses between 7% and 9.6% in April.

Major indexes are lower following earlier economic data, with weakness in Caterpillar shares also pressuring the Dow. Investors also await the upcoming Fed decision.

Investor apprehension grips Wall Street with major indices showing midday losses on Tuesday in New York trading, ahead of the Federal Reserve&#8217;s potentially hawkish <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/macro-notification/24/04/38526201/is-hawkish-shift-on-inflation-imminent-wall-street-analysts-traders-brace-for-fed-impa">pivot in Wednesday&#8217;s meeting. </a>
The S&amp;P 500 retraced 0.9% after a 2-day positive streak, with the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 slightly underperforming, down 1.1%. Small caps suffered larger losses, with the iShares Russell 2000 ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IWM#NYSE">IWM</a>) down 1.5%. 
The stock market faced renewed pressure as economic data revealed a decline in consumer confidence and persistent wage pressures, putting further pressures on the Federal Reserve. 
The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported a 1.2% increase in the employment cost index for the first quarter of 2024, surpassing market expectations of 1% growth and accelerating from the previous three-month period&#8217;s 0.9% rise. In April, the Conference Board consumer confidence index dropped from 103.1 to 97 points, falling short of forecasts for a rise to 104.
Bonds provided little refuge to investors as yields surged in response to comments from U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, who voiced concerns about the deficit trajectory and proposed substantial measures to address budgetary gaps.
Yields on the 2-year Treasury note breached the psychological 5% threshold, aiming for the highest close since mid-November 2023. The U.S. dollar index (DXY), as tracked Invesco DB USD Index Bullish Fund ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UUP#NYSE">UUP</a>), rose 0.6%. 
Gold tumbled 1.7%, pressured by higher yields and stronger greenback. Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) plummeted over 5%, on track for its worst daily performance in four weeks amid weak sentiment on cryptocurrencies.

The&nbsp;SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust&nbsp;(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>) fell 0.9% to $505.30, the&nbsp;SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DIA#NYSE">DIA</a>) fell 1.1% to $379.75 and the tech-heavy&nbsp;Invesco QQQ Trust&nbsp;(NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QQQ#NASDAQ">QQQ</a>) fell 1.1% to $428.01, according to&nbsp;<a href="https://pro.benzinga.com/dashboard">Benzinga Pro data</a>.&nbsp;
Sector-wise, the Utilities Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLU#NYSE">XLU</a>) outperformed, up 0.1%, marking the sole positive performance among the eleven S&amp;P 500 sectors. The Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLE#NYSE">XLE</a>) was the major laggard, down 2.1%.

Stocks Dive On Fears Of Hawkish Fed; Treasury Yields Rise, Bitcoin Tumbles To $60,000: What's Driving Markets Tuesday?

U.S. stocks kicked off the week on a positive note, with all major averages edging higher in anticipation of significant events including earnings reports from tech giants like Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMZN#NASDAQ">AMZN</a>) on Tuesday and Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAPL#NASDAQ">AAPL</a>) on Thursday, a pivotal Federal Reserve Open Market Committee meeting on Wednesday, and the April&#8217;s <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/labor-market">jobs report on Friday.</a>
The S&amp;P 500 rose 0.2% by midday trading in New York, following a 1% surge last Friday. Both the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 and blue-chip stocks in the Dow Jones made similar gains. 
Small caps, as tracked by iShares Russell 2000 ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IWM#NYSE">IWM</a>), outperformed large-cap stocks, rising as much as 0.9%. 
Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) grabbed the market spotlight by securing a significant partnership with Chinese search engine giant Baidu Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BIDU#NYSE">BIDU</a>), which granted the Elon Musk-led company access to its mapping license for data collection <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/04/38491516/teslas-model-3-and-model-y-clear-chinas-data-security-hurdle-fsd-software-deployment-nears">on China&#8217;s public roads. </a> 
The deal removes a last regulatory barrier for Tesla&#8217;s driver assistance system, known as Full Self-Driving (FSD), to be introduced in China. Shares of Tesla rose as much as 16% Monday. 
The Bank of Japan sent shockwaves through the forex exchange market by intervening to support the value of the Japanese yen, which had plummeted to as low as <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/asia/24/04/38494691/japan-intervenes-to-support-struggling-yen-why-did-it-trigger-nikkei-225-dip-4-charts-to-watch">160 per dollar overnight.</a> This action spurred a significant reversal in the USD/JPY exchange rate, plunging to as low as 155 by 1 p.m. ET.
In the commodities market, natural gas prices jumped by nearly 7% on improved demand forecasts, with the U.S. Henry Hub futures surpassing $2 per million British thermal units. 
Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) was 0.5% lower, on track to notch a six-day losing streak.

Sector-wise, the Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLY#NYSE">XLY</a>) outperformed, up 2.3%, followed by the Utilities Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLU#NYSE">XLU</a>), up 1.5%. The Communication Services Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLC#NYSE">XLC</a>) was the major laggard, down 1%.

US Stocks Kick Off The Week In The Green, Tesla Rockets On China's FSD Approval, Yen Rallies: What's Driving Markets Monday?

Strong earnings reports from Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GOOGL#NASDAQ">GOOGL</a>) and Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MSFT#NASDAQ">MSFT</a>) have restored positive sentiment in the market, sweeping away fears of increasing risks of stagflation that had <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-ratings/analyst-color/24/04/38434513/us-growth-slows-in-q1-yet-inflation-acceleration-signals-stagflation-the-worst-poss">emerged from Thursday&#8217;s data.</a>
Although the latest PCE inflation report signaled higher-than-expected annual readings, they failed to meaningfully impact on already low expectations <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/macro-notification/24/04/38458581/feds-key-inflation-indicator-hits-2-8-dashes-rate-cut-hopes-traders-on-alert">for Fed rate cuts.</a> Rather, investors opted to focus on positive signals stemming from corporate earnings.
The S&amp;P 500 gained over 1%, and is up by 2.8% this week, on track for its best week since late October 2023. The Nasdaq 100 outperformed with a 1.8% increase, pushing the weekly performance to over 4%, also eyeing its best week in seven months.
A significant amount of support for the broader market came from the Magnificent Seven, with the group gaining a combined market cap of $400 billion in a day, more than offsetting losses seen on Thursday. The Roundhill Magnificent Seven ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MAGS#NYSE">MAGS</a>) rallied 3.5%.
Small caps also saw robust gains, with the iShares Russell 2000 ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IWM#NYSE">IWM</a>) up 1%. The big underperformer was the energy sector, as its two major oil giants – Exxon Mobil Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XOM#NYSE">XOM</a>) and Chevron Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CVX#NYSE">CVX</a>) – failed to impress investors <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/earnings/earnings-misses/24/04/38464570/us-energy-stocks-fall-following-oil-giants-subdued-earnings-reports">with their quarterly results.</a>
Treasury yields were slightly softer, although remained at elevated levels, indicating they had already absorbed the rising inflation narrative over the past weeks. 
Both gold and oil held steady at $2,300 per ounce and $83 a barrel, respectively. Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) softened below $64,000, on track for a fourth straight negative week.

The iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TLT#NASDAQ">TLT</a>) fell 0.9%, extending its year-to-date drop to 10%. 
Rising yields are propelling the greenback higher, particularly against the low-yielding Japanese yen which tumbled to past 155 per dollar, hitting the lowest level since June 1990.
Tesla Inc. posted lower-than-expected results last quarter, but shares rose 10%. Investors reacted to the automaker&#8217;s pledge to produce more affordable models to broaden the market.

Market-implied probabilities for a rate cut by the Fed as early as September jumped to 72%, up from 67% on Monday, according to CME Group&#8217;s FedWatch Tool. 
Meanwhile, corporate earnings have generally exceeded expectations, with investors now eagerly anticipating results from Visa Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/V#NYSE">V</a>) and Tesla Inc. By midday trading in New York, the S&amp;P 500 climbed 1.2%, setting the stage for its best performance in over a month. The Nasdaq 100 outperformed the broader market, up 1.5%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average saw a more modest increase of 0.6%.

The&nbsp;SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust&nbsp;(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>) rose 1% to $500.03, the&nbsp;SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DIA#NYSE">DIA</a>) rose 0.8%% to $383.02 and the tech-heavy&nbsp;Invesco QQQ Trust&nbsp;(NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QQQ#NASDAQ">QQQ</a>) rallied 1% to $417.03, according to&nbsp;<a href="https://pro.benzinga.com/dashboard">Benzinga Pro data</a>.&nbsp;
Small caps, as tracked by the iShares Russell 2000 ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IWM#NYSE">IWM</a>), soared 1.2%. 
Sector-wise, the Financials Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLF#NYSE">XLF</a>) outperformed, up 1.4%, followed by the Industrials Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLI#NYSE">XLI</a>), up 1%. The Materials Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLB#NYSE">XLB</a>) was the major laggard, up 0.2%.

<li>Cardinal Health Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CAH#NYSE">CAH</a>) experienced a 5% decline following the company&#8217;s announcement that its pharmaceutical distribution contracts with UnitedHealth Group Inc.&#8216;s (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UNH#NYSE">UNH</a>) OptumRx unit will not be renewed after expiring at the end of June.</li>
<li>Newmont Corporation (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NEM#NYSE">NEM</a>) tumbled over 3%, as gold prices fell. </li>

Stocks Set To Snap Worst Losing Streak In Nearly 2 Years, Gold Sinks, Bitcoin Reclaims $66,000: What's Driving Markets Monday?

Stocks surged higher on Thursday, with the S&amp;P 500 index aiming to snap a four-day losing streak as investors assess the latest wave <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/calendars/earnings">of corporate earnings.</a>
During midday trading in New York, all major indices were in the green. Notably, small caps, as tracked by the iShares Russell 2000 ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IWM#NYSE">IWM</a>), outperformed, posting a 1% increase.
Industry-wise, airline stocks continued their upward momentum, with the U.S. Global Jets ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/JETS#NYSE">JETS</a>) climbing 2.7%, building on Wednesday&#8217;s 3.9% surge.
Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) had another lackluster session, declining over 3% and on track for its lowest close since January 2023. This decline followed Deutsche Bank&#8217;s downgrade of the EV-maker from Buy to Hold, citing concerns over the strategic pivot to autonomous vehicles.
On the data front, the Philadelphia Fed Manufacturing Index posted a sharp upside surprise, registering at 15.5 compared to the expected 1.5 for April. However, existing home sales disappointed expectations, declining 4.3% year over year.
Commodities experienced a rebound, with copper witnessing strong gains, up over 2% to reach a 22-month high, and gold showing further strength with a 1% increase. Natural gas prices rallied over 3% due to slower than expected inventory builds last week.
Meanwhile, Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) rallied 4% to reach $63,700 ahead of the highly anticipated halving event.

Sector-wise, the Communication Services Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLC#NYSE">XLC</a>) outperformed, up 1.2%. The Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLK#NYSE">XLK</a>) was the major laggard, down 0.4%.
