In this study, NV-387 Oral treatment led to a survival lifespan of 15 days, compared to 10 days with Oseltamivir Oral treatment, 11 days with Peramivir I.V. treatment, and 11 days with Baloxivir Oral treatment, while the vehicle-treated and untreated (infected) animals survived only 8 days.
Thus the anti-Influenza activity of NV-387 given orally was substantially superior to all three of the approved anti-influenza drugs, namely Tamiflu, Rapivab, and Xofluza.

Given the broad-spectrum of antiviral activity of NV-387 against viruses in many different virus families, we believe that its effectiveness against Influenza A/H3N2 is indicative of potential antiviral activity against most if not all Influenza A viruses.
In particular, we believe, based on structural information, that the H5 hemagglutinin of H5N1 bird flu virus may be even more susceptible to NV-387 attack than the H3 hemagglutinin of the H3N2 virus. This is because H5 contains a long polybasic site sequence, which has biochemical affinity from electrostatic interactions with the antiviral ligand used in NV-387. This antiviral ligand is a sulfated proteoglycan mimetic.
Thus it is very likely that NV-387 may have strong antiviral activity against the bird flu H5N1 virus, although further work is needed in this regard.

All in an effort to help treat sickle-cell anemia, cancers, blood disorders, blindness, cystic fibrosis and even muscular dystrophy.



Months ago,&nbsp;CRISPR Therapeutics&nbsp;(NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/crsp-stock-quote/">CRSP</a>) received Food &amp; Drug Administration approval for its sickle-cell treatment. It also received clearance for its gene-edited therapy for transfusion-dependent beta-thalassemia (TDT).



Even more exciting, generative artificial intelligence (AI) has made its way into gene editing.&nbsp;Profluent, an AI-first protein design company, just introduced OpenCRISPR, an AI-generated gene editor.&nbsp;



&ldquo;Our success points to a future where AI precisely designs what is needed to create a range of bespoke cures for disease. To spur innovation and democratization in gene editing, with the goal of pulling this future forward, we are open-sourcing the products of this initiative,&rdquo; said Ali Madani, Profluent co-founder and CEO,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.fiercebiotech.com/medtech/profluent-combines-llms-and-crispr-open-source-gene-editing-project">as quoted by Fierce Biotech</a>.



But that&rsquo;s just the start. At the moment,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.mcri.edu.au/impact/a-z-child-adolescent-health/o-r/rare-genetic-disorders#:~:text=There%20are%20more%20than%207%2C000,one%20person%20in%20a%20family.">there are about 7,000 diseases caused by genetic disorders</a>, which occur when a mutation affects your genes. Or, when you have the wrong amount of genetic material, as noted by the Cleveland Clinic. Many could potentially be fixed is the hope.&nbsp;



That being said, investors may want to jump into gene editing stocks.



<h2>Intellia Therapeutics (NTLA)</h2>

Now at $21.40, I&rsquo;d like to see it climb back to $26. For one, it&rsquo;s nearing the presentation of <a href="https://finance.yahoo.com/news/intellia-therapeutics-present-updated-data-113000169.html">Phase 1 of its ongoing NTLA-2002 Phase 1/2 study</a>&nbsp;at the&nbsp;European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI) Congress 2024, taking place May 31.



It also expects to&nbsp;initiate the&nbsp;<a href="https://ir.intelliatx.com/news-releases/news-release-details/intellia-therapeutics-announces-fourth-quarter-and-full-year-6">Phase 3 study of NTLA-2002</a>&nbsp;for the treatment of hereditary angioedema (HAE), a rare genetic condition that can lead to life-threatening swelling attacks in&nbsp;the second half of the year. Should the company see solid success with NTLA-2002, it could help treatHAE right away.



It&rsquo;s also on track&nbsp;to dose the first patient in the&nbsp;<a href="https://ir.intelliatx.com/news-releases/news-release-details/intellia-therapeutics-announces-fourth-quarter-and-full-year-6">Phase 1 study of NTLA-3001</a>. This is an&nbsp;in vivo&nbsp;gene insertion candidate for the treatment of alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency (AATD)-associated lung disease, as noted in a company press release.



<h2>Metagenomi (MGX)</h2>

While its chart is nothing to write home about, its artificial intelligence story is.



At the moment, the company uses an AI-powered discovery engine to &ldquo;find naturally occurring gene editing systems in metagenomic data. Metagenomi is leveraging AI to enhance the power of CRISPR gene editing technology, as it works towards its vision of advancing therapies and cures for oncology and genetic diseases,&rdquo;&nbsp;<a href="https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/metagenomi-where-ai-biology-big-data-converge-new-gene-j%C3%BCrg-eckhardt?trk=public_profile_article_view">as noted on LinkedIn.com</a>.



At just $7 a share at the moment,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.streetinsider.com/Analyst+Comments/Jefferies+Starts+Metagenomi+Inc+%28MGX%29+at+Buy/22881277.html">analysts at Jefferies</a>&nbsp;say it&rsquo;s a buy, with a $23 price target. The firm highlighted MGX&rsquo;s next-generation editing tools. BMO Capital analysts have an outperform rating on the stock, with a $22 price target. They also noted that the company&nbsp;could &ldquo;potentially perform all known gene editing approaches,&rdquo; as quoted by Seeking Alpha.&nbsp;



Even better,&nbsp;<a href="https://metagenomi.co/news/metagenomi-reports-business-updates-and-full-year-2023-financial-results">according to the company</a>,&nbsp;&ldquo;Through&shy;out&nbsp;2023, we achieved key ther&shy;a&shy;peu&shy;tic mile&shy;stones, includ&shy;ing pre&shy;clin&shy;i&shy;cal proof of con&shy;cept in non&shy;hu&shy;man pri&shy;mates for our lead pro&shy;gram in Hemo&shy;phil&shy;ia A,&rdquo; said CEO Bri&shy;an C. Thomas.&nbsp;&ldquo;Look&shy;ing ahead, we are plan&shy;ning for addi&shy;tion&shy;al non&shy;hu&shy;man pri&shy;mate data read&shy;outs over the course of this year, includ&shy;ing&nbsp;12-month data for our Hemo&shy;phil&shy;ia A&nbsp;pro&shy;gram, expect&shy;ed in the sec&shy;ond half of&nbsp;2024.&rdquo;&nbsp;



<h2>Global X Genomics &amp; Biotechnology ETF (GNOM)</h2>

<a href="https://www.globalxetfs.com/funds/gnom/">With an expense ratio of 0.50%,</a>&nbsp;the exchange-traded fund (ETF) holds 41 stocks that could benefit from&nbsp;gene editing, genomic sequencing, genetic medicine/therapy, computational genomics, and biotechnology, as noted by GlobalXETFs.com. Among its current top holdings include CRISPR Therapeutics,&nbsp;Illumina&nbsp;(NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ILMN#NASDAQ">ILMN</a>) and&nbsp;10X Genomics&nbsp;(NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TXG#NASDAQ">TXG</a>) to name a few.



At the moment, the GNOM ETF is also technically oversold around $9.84. It&rsquo;s also now sitting at double-bottom support dating back to late 2023. It&rsquo;s even over-extended on RSI, MACD, and Williams&rsquo; %R. From its last traded price of $9.84, I&rsquo;d like to see it rally back to about $12.50.



Even better, I can diversify with the GNOM ETF at a low cost.&nbsp;If I were to buy 100 shares, it would cost me $984 for exposure to its 41 holdings.&nbsp;If I were to buy just one of its holdings &mdash; let&rsquo;s say 100 shares of CRSP &mdash; it would cost me close to $5,300.

Gene editing stocks are among the most intriguing in the biotech scene. The genomics revolution may be as exciting as the ongoing artificial intelligence one. But, of course, only time will tell what the future holds for that exciting corner of biotech.



Disruptive innovation investor Cathie Wood is pretty upbeat about genomics plays, so much so that she has an entire ARK ETF &mdash; the ARK Genomics Revolution ETF (NYSEARCA:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/arkg-stock-quote/">ARKG</a>) &mdash; devoted to uncovering the best growth opportunities in gene-editing therapies.



I do not doubt genomics is as disruptive as Wood believes it is. It&rsquo;s unclear when Wall Street will start pounding the table on the firms behind the most promising gene-editing therapeutics.



In any case, it&rsquo;s hard not to tune into the biotech firms that may be on the next frontier of medicine. As always, investing in nascent technologies can be risky. But if you&rsquo;re a young investor hungry for explosive growth, it can&rsquo;t hurt to monitor some of the genomics plays right here while others are well off their highs. Here are three gene editing stocks that stand out as the most promising.



<h2>CRISPR Therapeutics (CRSP)</h2>

As with any biotech company, however, it&rsquo;s hard to tell which pipeline candidates will succeed and which will fail.



As it stands, there&rsquo;s no shortage of impressive candidates in the pipeline. Some early-stage ones aim to treat ailments such as Type 1 diabetes and even tumors (<a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/williamhaseltine/2023/12/19/car-t-therapy-may-cause-rare-cancer--how-crispr-could-be-the-solution/?sh=72ff99b82c92">CAR-T cell therapies</a>). Such candidates are slated to move forward over time but could hit unforeseen roadblocks in the future. That&rsquo;s just how clinical trials go sometimes and why even the most innovative biotechs are risky bets.



Now that the excitement has mostly died down, perhaps it&rsquo;s time to give the mid-cap firm another look as the breakthrough science behind gene editing advances rapidly. The stock is down more than 72% from its all-time high at writing.



<h2>Vertex Pharmaceuticals (VRTX)</h2>

The $103 billion biotech firm stands out as a more prudent way to expose your portfolio to the groundbreaking potential in genomics, especially while it&rsquo;s trading at a modest 28.8 times trailing price-to-earnings (P/E).



In any case, Casgevy, a gene therapy that helps treat people with sickle cell disease, shows tremendous promise following the December 2023 <a href="https://www.fda.gov/news-events/press-announcements/fda-approves-first-gene-therapies-treat-patients-sickle-cell-disease">FDA approval</a>. Undoubtedly, Casgevy is a product of the collaboration between Vertex and CRISPR Therapeutics and could hold significant potential for both firms. Arguably, the treatment is a breakthrough in gene editing and may very well be the first of many.



So, if CRISP stock is a tad too choppy for your liking, perhaps Vertex is a better bet, given it&rsquo;s the larger, more diversified business. It&rsquo;s also been wheeling and dealing of late, most recently buying up Alpine Immune Sciences in a deal worth $4.9 billion. With a decent balance sheet and strong cash flows, VRTX stock represents a fantastic way to dip a toe into the gene-editing waters.



<h2>Intellia Therapeutics (NTLA)</h2>

Undoubtedly, the firm has had a few tough quarters of late. The recent layoff (<a href="https://www.biospace.com/article/biospace-layoff-tracker-2023-athenex-shutters-facility-cuts-staff/">around 15%</a> of the workforce was let go back in January) was discouraging as the firm looked to shore up some cash.



While such cuts aren&rsquo;t ideal, many investors are underestimating the pipeline, which management remains focused on advancing. Additionally, the balance sheet is in pretty decent shape, with around $992.5 million in cash as of the end of Q3 2023.



Though the firm may not be an imminent blockbuster in the works, many of the early-stage candidates are intriguing. Yes, they will take time to advance, but many candidates will be worth the wait, especially with NTLA stock in a massive rut.



Further, its partnership with Regeneron (NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/regn-stock-quote/">REGN</a>) for work on in <a href="https://ir.intelliatx.com/news-releases/news-release-details/intellia-therapeutics-announces-third-quarter-2023-financial">vivo CRISPR</a> therapies could pay off in due time. Combining talents with promising treatments is never a bad idea. It helped CRISPR and Vertex break ground on Casgevy, after all.
