Cathie Wood&#8217;s Ark Invest was on a chip stock buying spree on Monday, and the purchase assumes importance because it came just ahead of Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.&#8217;s (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMD#NASDAQ">AMD</a>) <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-ratings/price-target/24/04/38498428/amd-q1-earnings-preview-analysts-bullish-but-warn-of-factors-that-can-derail-the-sem">earnings.</a>
What Happened: Ark, through its ARK Autonomous Technology &amp; Robotics ETF (CBOE: ARKQ), added 2,895 shares of AMD, valued at $463,779. AMD has a 1.83% weighting in the exchange-traded fund, which holds just under 100,000 shares of the chipmaker.
AMD is scheduled to report its first-quarter results on Tuesday after the market close, with analysts, on average, estimating earnings of 61 cents per share on revenue of $5.46 billion, according to <a href="https://benzinga.grsm.io/lxquj26b2sag">Benzinga Pro data.</a>
Ark also bought 2,079 shares of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSM#NYSE">TSM</a>), the foundry that supplies chips to Nvidia and Apple. Based on the closing price of the NYSE-listed TSMC ADR, the purchase is worth $287,942.

JPMorgan: According to Sur, Intel&#8217;s guidance suggests a slow recovery for PC and data center segments, requiring a strong second half for full-year outlook. There appear to be confidence issues in core compute and diversification initiatives. 
Customer foundry revenue was lower than expected in Q1, but product and technology pipeline remains strong. The company&#8217;s roadmap milestones are on track, with new products like Sierra Forest and Granite Rapids ramping up. Overall, while 2Q guidance is muted, there is optimism for a gradual recovery in general compute demand but Intel &#8220;will be an underperformer relative to the group over the next 12-18 months,&#8221; Sur says.
Goldman Sachs: Intel&#8217;s 2Q24 revenue and non-GAAP EPS guidance were lower than expected, attributed to the delayed recovery in traditional server demand now expected in H2. This delay is due to Cloud and Enterprise customers prioritizing AI infrastructure spending. &#8220;AI prioritization continues to weigh on traditional server demand&#8221; said Hari.
Goldman Sachs remains &#8220;encouraged by Intel's progress in Accelerating Computing&#8221;, particularly with the launch of Gaudi3. However, it faces challenges in maintaining its share in the Data Center Compute market against competitors like Nvidia Corp (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>) and Arm Holdings PLC (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ARM#NASDAQ">ARM</a>).
Oppenheimer: &#8220;We remain on sidelines as turnaround efforts take root,&#8221; said Schafer. He attributed Intel&#8217;s weaker Q1 performance to weaker demand and the sunsetting of non-core and traditional packaging. 
Management sees Q1 as the bottom, expecting quarter-over-quarter growth throughout the year. PC and data center (DC) sales are expected to be flat in Q2, with DC leading in the second half due to the ramp of the Gaudi3 accelerator and cyclical recovery in other segments. 
DC is expected to be up about 25% this year. Despite optimism, Intel&#8217;s roadmap and technology leadership are concerns for Schafer. While constructive on the data center outlook, caution remains regarding PC unit growth.
Needham: Bolton&#8217;s Hold rating is due to Intel&#8217;s high valuation, declining revenue estimates, growing competition, and distant IFS revenue contributions, &#8220;all setting up for a more difficult road ahead&#8220;. 
Intel faces challenges in the data center market, said Bolton, with wallet share shifting to AI-compute and competition from new architectures like ARM-based CPUs and evolving ASICs. While losses in Desktop and Notebook share have slowed, positive PC trends are insufficient to support INTC&#8217;s CY24 PC unit TAM.
Wedbush: Intel Corp is &#8220;still a work in progress,&#8221; said Bryson. He notes that Intel&#8217;s guidance for >$500M in Habana sales in 2H&#8217;24 was below expectations, despite prior commentary suggesting a larger backlog and increased AI accelerator spending. 
While Sierra Forrest and Granite Rapids are on track for release, Bryson sees their impact on Intel&#8217;s share and revenues being modest. Additionally, Meteor Lake experienced increased demand in CQ1, with units expected to double in CQ2, but supply constraints are hindering Intel&#8217;s ability to meet this demand as it ramps up wafer level assembly.
Wedbush also thinks &#8220;the recent pessimism weighing on the stock is arguably overdone.&#8221; But, analysts &#8220;still aren&#8217;t comfortable yet in getting more constructive around Intel.&#8221;
BofA Securities: Arya noted &#8220;higher costs, lower growth, tough competition,&#8221; as three key attributes identifiable with Intel&#8217;s Q1 earnings report and future outlook.
Intel&#8217;s Q1 earnings met expectations, but Q2 guidance disappointed due to high costs. While Arya sees the company&#8217;s strong enterprise position and US manufacturing assets offering potential, limited AI exposure could hamper growth. Q2 sales missed targets amid weak macro demand. 
However, Intel anticipates a strong second half driven by cyclical improvements, AI PC growth, and positive enterprise trends. The company is focusing on the Gaudi3 ramp, CHIPS grants, and cost reductions to improve profitability. Challenges include losing server market share and competition in AI accelerators. Arya sees Intel&#8217;s future success depending on leveraging manufacturing synergies and managing competition from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSM#NYSE">TSM</a>).
Mizuho Securities: &#8220;We remain positive on INTC given stable compute server share, Sierra Forest and Granite Rapids product ramps ahead, and valuation with low expectations,&#8221; said Rakesh.
According to Rakesh, Intel&#8217;s data-centric AI (DCAI) segment remains flat as the company plays catch-up with peers, with the Gaudi3 ramp in 2H expected to contribute but still at a small scale. 
Intel&#8217;s data center (DC) is estimated to grow by 4% y/y in 2024, compared to Nvidia&#8217;s consensus estimate of 102% y/y growth. 
Intel is ramping its foundry business, adding external customers and anticipating margins to trough in 2024 before a stronger ramp in 2025. Despite a disappointing June quarter guide, Rakesh believes new product ramps and stable server share, combined with low expectations, could limit downside as Intel trades at a lower P/S multiple compared to Advanced Micro Devices Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMD#NASDAQ">AMD</a>) and Nvidia.

If CEO Elon Musk proceeds with this plan, Tesla will surpass tech giants like&nbsp;Amazon.Com Inc&nbsp;(NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMZN#NASDAQ">AMZN</a>) and&nbsp;Alphabet Inc&nbsp;(NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GOOG#NASDAQ">GOOG</a>) (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GOOGL#NASDAQ">GOOGL</a>)&nbsp;Google&nbsp;as a significant Nvidia customer.&nbsp;
During Tesla&#8217;s first quarterly earnings report for 2024, Musk disclosed that the company currently possesses 35,000 H100 chips, the most advanced and expensive graphics processing units designed for AI applications, CNBC&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.cnbctv18.com/technology/tesla-nvidia-h100-biggest-buyer-google-amazon-microsoft-meta-19401278.htm" rel="noreferrer noopener">reports</a>.
These chips are vital for Musk&#8217;s AI initiatives, which include the development of advanced robots like Optimus Bot and Robotaxi and a supercomputer named Dojo.
Reports indicate that&nbsp;Meta Platforms Inc&nbsp;(NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/META#NASDAQ">META</a>) is Nvidia&#8217;s largest customer.&nbsp;
According to the World Economic Forum, Nvidia produced 550,000 chips last year, and companies must wait until 2024 to secure additional supplies.&nbsp;
Microsoft Corp&nbsp;(NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MSFT#NASDAQ">MSFT</a>) is the second-largest buyer, as stated by Omdia, with an order of 150,000 GPUs in 2023. Other significant purchasers include Oracle Corp (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ORCL#NYSE">ORCL</a>), Tencent Holding Ltd (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TCEHY#OTC">TCEHY</a>), Google, and Amazon, each reportedly acquiring 50,000 chips. Shares of semiconductor and chip stocks are trading higher amid a continued rebound following Friday's drop.

On CNBC's &#8220;<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/video/2024/04/22/final-trades-goldman-sachs-sl-green-and-taiwan-semi.html">Halftime Report Final Trades</a>,&#8221; Stephen Weiss of Short Hills Capital Partners said Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSM#NYSE">TSM</a>) is <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/24/04/38362650/tsmc-topped-estimates-on-the-back-of-insatiable-ai-demand">oversold and cheap</a>.
On April 18, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing exceeded first-quarter financial expectations. The company's revenue surged 16.5% to $18.87 billion, surpassing the Street consensus estimate of $18.40 billion, while net income increased by 8.9% to $6.97 billion.
Jenny Van Leeuwen Harrington of Gilman Hill Asset Management, LLC said SL Green Realty Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SLG#NYSE">SLG</a>), which reported earnings last week, has a 6% yield.
On April 17, SL Green Realty posted first-quarter sales of $128.203 million, missing market expectations of $152.668 million. The company posted FFO of $3.07 beating estimates of $2.16. 
Evercore ISI Group analyst Steve Sakwa maintained SL Green Realty with an Underperform but raised the price target from $46 to $47 on April 22.

Investors have been snookered by technology head fakes in the past. The metaverse was hardly the game-changing advance we were promised. Very few people, it turns out, actually want to be connected to their computers all day, every day to work, play and interact. The metaverse may hold some value but the exponential market opportunity analysts predicted seems way off the mark.



Artificial intelligence (AI) is different. Today, businesses are realizing tangible real-world benefits of utilizing AI. Speed bumps will emerge along the way, of course. <a href="https://investorplace.com/2024/04/3-stocks-most-at-risk-of-ais-alarming-energy-consumption/">Energy consumption</a> is going to strain just how far the technology can go. Water for cooling systems will divert an already scarce resource from other equally vital needs. But unlike the metaverse, AI is the real deal.



Nvidia (NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/nvda-stock-quote/">NVDA</a>) has been one of the primary beneficiaries of the early stages of AI&rsquo;s breakout. Its advanced graphics processing unit (GPU) chips were readily able to handle the complex and all-consuming nature of AI&rsquo;s demands. But with more competition developing equally powerful chips, Nvidia stock may not be the winning play it once was.



The following three companies are <a href="https://investorplace.com/industries/technology/artificial-intelligence/">AI stocks</a> to outshine Nvidia in the next stage of the technology&rsquo;s evolution and growth.&nbsp;



<h2>Broadcom (AVGO)</h2>

They might be surprised to learn Broadcom is actually the second-largest AI chipmaker by revenue behind Nvidia.



The chipmaker generated $4 billion in annual AI revenue last year but reported $2.3 billion in the first quarter, quadruple the year-ago figure. It estimates 35% of fiscal 2024 revenue will come from AI, or some $10 billion. Previously the chipmaker forecast a quarter of its revenue, or $8 billion, would be from AI but growth is accelerating.



The reason for the increase is <a href="https://investorplace.com/2024/03/stock-splits-2024-3-stocks-that-could-follow-in-walmarts-footsteps/">data center demand from hyperscalers</a>. Broadcom&rsquo;s custom AI accelerators are behind the designs of the Tensor Processing Units (TPU) from Alphabet (NASDAQ: <a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/goog-stock-quote/">GOOG</a>)(NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/googl-stock-quote/">GOOGL</a>). Also, it designed a custom chip for Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/meta-stock-quote/">META</a>). At its investor day in March, Broadcom announced it signed on a third large cloud customer for its AI accelerators.



Look for the chipmaker to readily surpass Nvidia in the near future.



<h2>Marvell Technology (MRVL)</h2>

The chipmaker is looking for AI revenue to <a href="https://investorplace.com/2023/10/2-no-brainer-ai-stocks-to-buy-and-one-to-run-away-from/">double this year</a> and then keep doubling for several years thereafter. It expects to generate $2.6 billion in AI sales by 2026.



It counts Amazon (NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/amzn-stock-quote/">AMZN</a>) as a customer, and earlier this month announced it won another large customer for its AI chips. The one downside for Marvell Technology is that its custom chips carry lower gross margins than its off-the-shelf chip business.&nbsp;



Yet, custom chips will be a significant driver of future revenue growth. And Marvell Technology is looking to make up in volume what it loses in margins. For that reason, the chipmaker maintained its gross margin forecast when it reported earnings recently. Marvell says adjusted gross margins will be between 62% and 63% in the fiscal first quarter.



Where the chipmaker is expected to excel is in the electro-optical chips that sell into data centers and AI networks. With both channels anticipated to see significant expansion in the coming years, Marvell Technology will experience rapid growth.



<h2>Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSM)</h2>

As the world&rsquo;s largest chip foundry pureplay, just about every chipmaker turns to TSM to make its chips &ndash; Nvidia included.



When the chipmaker reported earnings the other day, it shook the market by implying a slowdown coming in the semiconductor market. However, it forecast its own business to keep growing with guidance of &ldquo;low- to mid-20%&rdquo; revenue growth. AI was the primary reason for it.



Chief Executive Officer (CEO) C.C. Wei said the <a href="https://www.reuters.com/technology/tsmc-set-report-5-rise-first-quarter-profit-strong-ai-chip-demand-2024-04-18/">contract manufacturer was still experiencing</a> a &ldquo;surge in AI-related demand.&rdquo; He termed it &ldquo;insatiable.&rdquo; It is yet another semiconductor stock expecting AI to cause revenue to &ldquo;more than double this year.&rdquo; TSM forecasts AI will represent a &ldquo;low-teens&rdquo; percentage of full-year sales.

With the global economy facing uncertain times, investors ought to position themselves in top <a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-types/blue-chip-stocks/">blue-chip stocks</a>. No, aligning yourself with the biggest publicly traded companies doesn&rsquo;t guarantee you anything. However, it should help you sleep a little easier at night.



For one thing, the top blue-chip stocks are well-known enterprises, obviously. As mature businesses, it&rsquo;s simply easier for Wall Street experts to predict their forward movements. You probably won&rsquo;t get rich off these ideas. Over the long run, though, your portfolio should benefit from steady gains.



Finally, because the big dogs are included in the benchmark indices, institutional investors have these shares in their portfolio. Again, that&rsquo;s not a guarantee of success but the odds are stacked in your favor. On that note, below are top blue-chip stocks to consider.



<h2>Taiwan Semiconductor (TSM)</h2>

Yes, it is one of the top blue-chip stocks. At the same time, Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/meta-stock-quote/">META</a>) saw its shares plunge badly after the Facebook owner <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2024/04/25/investing/meta-stock-plunges-ai-spending/index.html">spooked Wall Street</a> with its intention to &ldquo;invest aggressively&rdquo; in artificial intelligence.



Naturally, fears exist among some circles that the AI train is getting ahead of itself. If that&rsquo;s the case, the dynamic might impugn TSMC&rsquo;s business, which manufactures and sells integrated circuits (ICs) and other semiconductor devices. After all, the company&rsquo;s <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-03-08/tsmc-s-sales-gain-9-4-in-first-two-months-after-ai-boost">sales have noticeably increased</a> because of digital intelligence.



While I myself have concerns about certain AI-related enterprises being overheated, there doesn&rsquo;t appear to be sector-wide evidence that AI initiatives are fading. Further, TSMC serves myriad enterprises and functionalities.



Analysts are looking for <a href="https://finance.yahoo.com/quote/TSM/analysis">sales of $84.12 billion in fiscal 2024</a> and $101.95 billion in fiscal 2025. Until clear evidence suggests otherwise, TSM is one of the top blue-chip stocks to buy.



<h2>Chevron (CVX)</h2>

Ideologically, the company clashes with the broader push to move away from hydrocarbons. However, this directive &ndash; while certainly well meaning &ndash; doesn&rsquo;t align with broader realities.



One of those realities is economic in nature. People simply can&rsquo;t make the pivot to electric vehicles at scale. Indeed, many automakers are <a href="https://investorplace.com/2024/04/ubs-just-slashed-its-price-target-on-quantumscape-qs-stock/">pivoting away from EVs</a> and focusing their efforts on hybrid vehicles. Hybrids are combustion-based at the end of the day. So, Chevron should see continued demand, whether we like it or not.



Now, it is fair to point out that for the current fiscal year, analysts only project sales of $182.88 billion. That&rsquo;s down 2.6% from last year&rsquo;s print of $187.73 billion. Here&rsquo;s the thing &ndash; geopolitical dynamics will likely drive crude oil prices higher. Notably, the most optimistic sales target calls for $202.19 billion. I think that&rsquo;s more in line with the current geopolitical paradigm.



<h2>Disney (DIS)</h2>

As an entertainment giant with an enviable content portfolio, I normally wouldn&rsquo;t think of the Magic Kingdom as particularly treacherous. However, the company has made some missteps in reading social trends. As Anheuser-Busch (NYSE:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/bud-stock-quote/">BUD</a>) found out, it&rsquo;s important not to push agendas too far.



That said, Disney owns a massive content library such as the Star Wars franchise. With a little tweaking in its storyboarding, the company could easily turn the franchise into an excuse to print money. The entertainment stalwart did it before; it can do so again.



Another attribute favoring Disney is the theme park and resort business. According to a Deloitte report, while the revenge travel sentiment specifically may be fading, consumers will likely continue to <a href="https://www.hoteldive.com/news/travelers-prioritize-experiences-over-hotel-class-deloitte/705719/#:~:text=Events-,Travelers%20to%20prioritize%20experiences%20over%20hotel%20class%20in%202024%3A%20Deloitte,according%20to%20a%20new%20study.">prioritize experiential-based expenditures</a>. If that&rsquo;s the case, Disney can win out.



Notably, analysts rate shares a <a href="https://www.tipranks.com/stocks/dis/forecast">consensus strong buy</a> with a $128.93 average price target.

At one point Nvidia (NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/nvda-stock-quote/">NVDA</a>) stock was in official correction territory. Shares were down more than 20% on fears of a slowing artificial intelligence (AI) chip market. Not that the fears had any basis in fact. It was only because Super Micro Computer (NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/smci-stock-quote/">SMCI</a>) failed to provide <a href="https://investorplace.com/2024/04/is-the-super-micro-stock-crash-a-buying-opportunity-or-a-red-flag-for-ai-investors/">preliminary financial results</a> when announcing its earnings release date that caused the stock to slide.



It indicated that investors were worried about Nvidia&rsquo;s valuation. Having come so far so fast, the chipmaker was trading at nosebleed valuations. At such times, any sort of tremor in the marketplace can shake an overvalued stock&rsquo;s foundation&rsquo;s.



Although Nvidia stock has mostly bounced back, up about 13%, it still has a ways to go before reaching a new, all-time high. Also, it means investors might bail on it again at a moment&rsquo;s notice. You may want to protect your downside by seeking out new <a href="https://investorplace.com/industries/technology/artificial-intelligence/">AI stocks</a> to grab now.



Because the chipmaker&rsquo;s stock still carries lofty valuations, consider the three stocks below to make a windfall.



<h2>Qualcomm (QCOM)</h2>

But few realize that QCOM is an AI beast. Its Snapdragon 8S Gen 3 chip released last year powers the AI capabilities on Android phones like Samsung&lsquo;s Galaxy S24 series and smartphones from China&rsquo;s OnePlus and Xiaomi.&nbsp;



Also, the Snapdragon chip can support dozens of generative AI models. Those include Meta Platform&lsquo;s (NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/meta-stock-quote/">META</a>) Llama 2 and Alphabet&lsquo;s (NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/goog-stock-quote/">GOOG</a>)(NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/googl-stock-quote/">GOOGL</a>) Google Gemini. That suggests the chip can also make its way into lower cost phones and introduce the language models into their phones. We know Apple (NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/aapl-stock-quote/">AAPL</a>) wants to use Gemini in its next iteration of the iPhone.



It&rsquo;s doubtful Qualcomm can <a href="https://investorplace.com/2024/03/qualcomm-stock-is-no-nvidia-but-its-still-a-buy/">achieve the same market valuation</a> as Nvidia, if for no other reason than the growth trajectories of the various markets they target. However, as AI trickles down throughout technology ecosystems, more and varied uses for Qualcomm&rsquo;s chips will become apparent. And because QCOM stock offers investors a better stock valuation than its rival, investors will reap a windfall grabbing its shares now.



<h2>Arista Networks (ANET)</h2>

Arista Networks (NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/anet-stock-quote/">ANET</a>) should be a prime beneficiary. Hyperscalers such as Amazon (NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/amzn-stock-quote/">AMZN</a>), Meta and Microsoft (NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/msft-stock-quote/">MSFT</a>) are relying upon data centers for their cloud computing services.&nbsp;



Additionally, Arista Networks makes the servers, routers, switches and network operating software data centers rely upon. The stock took a big hit earlier this month after an analyst said it would face increased competition from Nvidia. Not usually considered a rival, Nvidia&rsquo;s acquisition of Mellanox several years ago positions it to enter the market.



Yet, Arista Networks counts all major hyperscalers as customers, primarily Meta and Microsoft, both seeking ways to <a href="https://investorplace.com/2024/04/nvidia-stock-is-down-10-is-this-the-beginning-of-the-end/">become less reliant</a> upon Nvidia. And Meta&rsquo;s recent earnings proclamation that it plans to spend $35 billion to $40 billion on AI should see a lot of that money fall to Arista Networks.&nbsp;



<h2>ASML Holdings (ASML)</h2>

The Netherlands-based manufacturer of specialized chip equipment is a literal monopoly on certain high-end machines needed for producing AI chips.



ASML is the <a href="https://investorplace.com/2024/04/these-were-q1s-best-performing-nasdaq-100-stocks-can-they-repeat-in-q2/">world&rsquo;s only manufacturer</a> of extreme ultraviolet lithography (EUV) machines. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (NYSE:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/tsm-stock-quote/">TSM</a>), Intel (NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/intc-stock-quote/">INTC</a>) and Samsung are all customers buying the equipment to produce the advanced AI chips customers need. TSM, of course, is the world&rsquo;s biggest foundry and counts Nvidia as a major customer.



The equipment manufacturer anticipates demand growing through 2025. And this year will be the first time ever ASML <a href="https://www.sec.gov/ix?doc=/Archives/edgar/data/0000937966/000093796624000008/asml-20231231.htm">pre-builds its inventory</a> in anticipation of future orders. Having supply on hand will shorten lead time and improve efficiency. If AI is going to grow, it is going to need ASML&rsquo;s equipment.

U.S. equities posted some gains last week, which I&rsquo;m sure was refreshing to see given the sell-off a week prior. The&nbsp;S&amp;P 500&nbsp;and&nbsp;Nasdaq Composite&nbsp;gained 2.7% and 2.2%, respectively. This brings their respective year-to-date gains up to 6.9% and 4.0%. Unfortunately, market risks still remain. Not only do we still need inflation to come down consistently, but some U.S. equities, like <a href="https://investorplace.com/industries/technology/semiconductor/">semiconductor stocks</a>, are still technically trading at relatively expensive multiples, and may be stocks to avoid, for now at least.



In terms of semiconductor stocks, some may see a bright spot in the market. I would press for caution. Even though, TSMC (NYSE:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/tsm-stock-quote/">TSM</a>) <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-04-10/tsmc-s-sales-surge-most-since-2022-after-riding-ai-chip-boom?sref=a6OYFmE3">posted</a> a solid Q1, we must keep in mind, the contract chip manufacturer&rsquo;s upbeat earnings and guidance are entangled with the blooming artificial intelligence chip market. Not every semiconductor company is poised to benefit from AI, as they have their own manufacturing issues or have products embedded within other end-markets. Below are three semiconductor stocks to avoid as the potential for a market crash remains in our midst.



<h2>Wolfspeed (WOLF)</h2>

Although, it&rsquo;s not affecting every electric vehicle manufacturer in the same manner. A slew of Chinese EV makers, as an example, have <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-04-02/chinese-ev-makers-post-strong-showing-in-march-after-slow-start?sref=a6OYFmE3">posted better than expected</a> first quarter results. Tesla (NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/tsla-stock-quote/">TSLA</a>), on the other hand, has <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2024/04/02/tesla-tsla-q1-2024-vehicle-delivery-and-production-numbers.html">continued</a> to disappoint. However, the slowdown in the EV market does not just impact cars manufacturers. Since so many semiconductor products help power so many of today&rsquo;s newer vehicles, investors would do well to avoid semiconductor companies with a large EV end-market. This includes a chip firm called Wolfspeed (NYSE:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/wolf-stock-quote/">WOLF</a>).



The semiconductor firm uses gallium nitride and silicon carbide to create materials that eventually become inputs products for EVs, fast charging and wireless technologies. In their <a href="https://s29.q4cdn.com/278875087/files/doc_earnings/2024/q2/earnings-result/Wolfspeed_Q2_2024_Earnings_Release.pdf">Q2&rsquo;2024 earnings report</a>, revenues increased year-over-year and beat Wall Street estimates, but Wolfspeed&rsquo;s net loss expanded due to &ldquo;underutilization costs&rdquo; related to a new production facility its building. While in the long-term added production will likely be a value-add, the short-terms whims of the market might not regard the further loss in net income so optimistically. 



WOLF shares have fallen nearly 40% on a year-to-date perspective. EV demand will probably remain lackluster until rates come down sufficiently, so even the medium-term headwinds for Wolfspeed&rsquo;s business may be in jeopardy. 



<h2>Intel (INTC)</h2>

Last year was, broadly, a great year for semiconductor stocks, especially those that traded at low valuations. Intel&rsquo;s share price nearly doubled in 2023. There was a lot of AI hype driving shares higher as market-watchers and traders speculated what the legacy chip maker would be able to bring to the new space.



Unfortunately, for Intel, in 2024, the stock has gone back to being a disappointment. INTC has plummeted over 30% year-to-date. Weak guidance following Intel&rsquo;s Q1 earnings report put a lot of pressure on shares. The chip maker&rsquo;s earning report as a whole was mostly positive, although there was clearly slack in both its Foundry and Data Center and AI businesses, which are both facing enormous competitive risks.



For these reasons, Bank of America and Goldman Sachs <a href="https://www.investopedia.com/intel-stock-plunges-amid-concerns-about-chipmakers-outlook-tough-competition-8639486">decided</a> to significantly lower their price targets. Goldman Sachs also reiterated its &ldquo;Sell&rdquo; rating.



While these competitive disadvantages exist, Intel is probably not the stock to hold, particularly as risks of a market crash mount. 



<h2>Texas Instruments (TXN)</h2>

The semiconductor firm just has not been able to properly diversify into high growth end-markets that would earn it a spot in anyone&rsquo;s portfolios. Texas Instruments deal in two business segments: Analog and Embedded devices. The former happens to be the larger segment of the two and deals with devices that help manage power in a variety of electronic devices. Continued soft demand in this end market led to TXN <a href="https://investor.ti.com/static-files/6dddd060-6d83-4bd2-9c46-4a7b0c413a98">posting a 16% decline in revenue</a> for their Q1 2024 earnings print.



The electronics sectors are still rebounding from last year&rsquo;s chip glut. Chip firms like Nvidia (NASDAQ:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/nvda-stock-quote/">NVDA</a>) and TSMC are not increasing revenue and profits based on a revitalized sector; rather, they&rsquo;re tapping into new sectors of growth, namely AI. Without diversification into higher growth end-markets, it&rsquo;s quite likely Texas Instruments will continue to deliver lukewarm growth and profits.
