Valentine's Day is today. Have you done shopping for your sweetie yet? If not, don't fret. The world of ETFs has several options that could just go down as the greatest Valentine's gifts ever. Think about it: Flowers die, chocolates melt, so it's pretty hard to top some profitable trading ideas as a gift.
Here are five ETFs for the big day.
1) iPath DJ-UBS Cocoa TR Sub-Index ETN NIB:
Obviously anythinig having to with chocolate would be on this list and NIB is as good as it gets in terms of a chocolate exchange traded product. The situation in Egypt has somewhat overshadowed a less-than-desirable politial scenario in Ivory Coast, the world's largest cocoa producer, but even with that aside, commodities are going higher and cocoa is a commodity. Watch for NIB to break old resistance in the mid-49 area.
2) SPDR S&P Retail XRT:
XRT is an ideal play for betting on improved consumer sentiment regardless of what holiday is coming up on the calendar, but in terms of Valentine's Day, the fund offers exposure to apparel makers for those that give the gift of clothes and online travel reservations firms for those want to take a romantic trip.
3) SPDR Gold Shares GLD
Jewelry is of course a big deal on Valentine's Day, but gold hasn't been a big deal in 2011. Well, let's just say this breather gold has been on is lasting and investors continue to pull money out of GLD as the fund's holdings fell 2.12 metric tons to 1,226.44 metric tons as of Feb. 9.
4) iShares MSCI Switzerland Index Fund EWL:
Home to fancy watches, tasty chocolate and plenty of gold, Switzerland is the perfect Valentine's Day play. That doesn't mean EWL is the perfect ETF. It's probably not even the perfect ETF to play the better side of Europe with right now simply because the technicals are breaking down a bit. Another $1.50-$2 off EWL and we would have a buying opportunity and longer-term investors can probably check in with EWL, but don't expect big things in the near-term.
