The Tesla Roadster flying car is no longer just a Musk punchline. At its Oct. 15 unveiling at SpaceX's test site in McGregor, Texas, Tesla's next-generation Roadster drove up a towering curved ramp, hung inverted at the top, then dropped off, flipped in midair and settled back onto the pavement. The trick relied on two systems. A fan-driven suction setup held the car against the ramp while it was upside down, and cold-gas thrusters built with SpaceX controlled the flip and the landing. In a second run, the Roadster vaulted over a lineup of Tesla vehicles that included a Semi before touching down safely. Tesla's official account posted the footage with a short caption stressing that the stunt was real and not computer-generated. Elon Musk shared his own clip framing it as the arrival of the flying car, and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai replied with congratulations and a joke about a Full Self-Driving version. Beyond the spectacle, the numbers are bold. Musk said certain versions can hit 60 mph in under a second and top out above 230 mph. Tesla's reservation page lists a $50,000 payment for the Performance model and $250,000 for the Thrust model, while the single-seat Rocket version with a full flight system is invite-only and not approved for public roads. For Tesla investors, timing is the open question. The company first showed a Roadster prototype in 2017 with deliveries promised for 2020, and executives now point to production starting in 2028. The demo was staged on a closed course, so it may say more about Tesla's engineering ambitions than about anything drivers will see on the highway soon.
