Bill Clinton Contrasts Harris, Trump In Fiery DNC Speech: 'We Have A Clear Choice: We The People Versus Me, Myself And I'

by Chris Katje Benzinga Staff Writer

Former President Bill Clinton shared his criticism of former President Donald Trump and told voters why they should select Vice President Kamala Harris as president during a speech at the Democratic National Convention (DNC) Wednesday.

Here are the key highlights from Clinton's speech and what else happened Wednesday.

What Happened: Bill Clinton is no stranger to the DNC with Wednesday's appearance marking his 12th appearance over four decades.

"The stakes are too high and I'm too old to gild the lily," Clinton said Wednesday, as reported by Politico. "I actually turned 78 two days ago. And I'm still not quite as old as Donald Trump."

In an attack on Trump, Clinton said the former president belittles others and casts blame elsewhere.

"He creates chaos, and then sort of curates it as if it were precious art."

Clinton said Harris has an inclusive vision for America, which is completely different from what Trump hopes to accomplish.

"The next time you hear him, don't count the lies. Count the I's," Clinton said of Trump. "When Kamala Harris is president, every day will begin with ‘you, you, you, you.'"

The former president echoed the "We The People" theme: "In 2024, we have a clear choice: ‘we the people' versus ‘me, myself, and I'"

Clinton also used Harris' past work history at restaurant company McDonald's to drill home the difference between the current vice president and former president Trump.

"She greeted every person with a 1,000-watt smile and said, ‘How can I help you?'"

The former president said Harris is still doing this today and initiatives like lowering the cost of housing and healthcare drill the point home.

Clinton also took time in his nearly 30-minute speech to praise President Joe Biden for his time as president of the U.S.

"I want to thank him for his courage, compassion, his class, his service, his sacrifice," Clinton said, as reported by Fox News.

Clinton compared Biden to a modern-day George Washington.

"He did something it's really hard for a politician to do. He voluntarily gave up political power. And George Washington knew that. And he did it."

Clinton said this sacrifice should help Biden's legacy like it did for Washington.

Why It's Important: Clinton was among the keynote speakers Wednesday at the four-day event. With his appearance, Harris now drew support from a sitting president, Biden, and two former presidents with Clinton and Barack Obama.

Other speakers Wednesday night were Minnesota Gov. and vice presidential nominee Tim Walz, former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, media magnate Oprah Winfrey and singer Stevie Wonder.

"We're now so fired up, we can't wait to leave here and do something, and what we're gonna do is elect Kamala Harris as the next president of the United States," Winfrey told the crowd.

Wednesday's night of speeches followed the first two nights and included speeches from Hillary Clinton, Biden, Barack Obama and Michelle Obama.

Thursday night will focus on Harris accepting the nomination from the Democratic Party and her speech could include more plans on what her presidency will look like.
