Overview

Battery materials company Vianode has secured a deal with General Motors Company (NYSE:GM) to supply high-performance anode graphite solutions.

The master supply agreement, which has a multi-billion value for Vianode, marks a significant step forward in bolstering the North American battery and EV supply chain.

The agreement encompasses the development of large-scale manufacturing capabilities and the supply of synthetic anode graphite through 2033.

The agreement will support GM’s battery cell manufacturing joint venture with LG Energy Solution, Ultium Cells LLC, and its future EV developments.

The graphite will be produced at Vianode’s large-scale, IRA-compliant plant in North America, with operations beginning in 2027.

“Vianode’s advanced battery materials enable cost-efficient batteries and EVs with better performances and a fraction of the carbon emissions of conventional technologies,” said Vianode CEO Burkhard Straube.

Vianode’s synthetic anode graphite presents a greener option compared to natural graphite, cutting CO2 emissions by 90% during manufacturing.

By 2030, Vianode aims to provide enough material to power 3 million EVs each year, with plans to expand its production capacity across North America and Europe.

As the largest component in lithium-ion batteries, anode graphite plays a vital role in the performance and energy storage of electric vehicles.

“This project will help advance our battery technology and drive greater value to our customers,” said Jeff Morrison, senior vice president of Global Purchasing and Supply Chain at General Motors.

Price Action: GM shares closed higher by 1.49% at $51.70 on Wednesday.
