Research In Motion and Apple Inc Tug Technology ETFs In Different Directions

Share:

“Wireless HOLDR (WMH) and SPDR Morgan Stanley Technology (MTK) could be in store for declines. Research in Motion (RIMM) continues its evening slide after missing the Street’s expectations with its improved profit,” ONN TV Reports.

They go on to say, “(RIMM) reported Q4 revs of $4.08 bln, up 18% from $3.46 bln in the same quarter last year but below the Street view of $4.31 bln. Earnings were $1.27 per share, up from $0.90 per share a year ago and a penny shy of the analyst mean of $1.28 per share on Thomson Reuters.”

“For Q1, the company is targeting revenue in the range of $4.25 to $4.45 bln and EPS of $1.31 to $1.38 per share. The Street is at $4.32 bln in revenue and earnings of $1.22 per share,” ONN TV Reports.

“(RIMM) is most famous for producing the popular Blackberry cell phone, which was an early leader in the now-burgeoning smartphone sector. The Blackberry has managed to retain much of its popularity recently despite the enormous success of Apple’s (AAPL) iPhone. Due to the popularity of smartphones, many networks have even reported problems from an excess of demand for data transfers. This trend has continued to the extent that many smartphones now come equipped with the capability to download data from Wi-Fi internet connections in addition to wireless phone signals,” Don Dion Reports From The Street.

Research In Motion’s (RIMM) disappointing numbers are taking a toll on some technology ETFs despite the market surging in today’s trading.  Investors may take this opportunity to buy on dips if you believe Research In Motion (RIMM) is there for the long haul. There is also some talk on Apple’s (AAPL) iPhone taking market share from Research In Motion in the cell phone business which could be why numbers were down.

Investors need to educate themselves and should always look into how ETFs are weighted in technology ETFs as many ETFs have more exposure to some Tech firms than others or don’t even include them.  Research In Motion (RIMM) and Apple Inc. (AAPL) are weighted very differently in many technology ETFs. Investors must always be aware of what they are investing in as these ETFs can swing in any direction based on a single company’s report.

We put together some details on Wireless HOLDR ETF (WMH) and the SPDR Morgan Stanley Technology ETF (MTK) below including the holdings of each ETF below.  Note that the Wireless HOLDR ETF does not even include Apple Inc. (AAPL) although it is a Wireless Holder ETF?

The investment ETF (WMH) seeks to diversify your investment in the wireless telecommunications industry through a single, exchange-listed instrument representing your undivided beneficial ownership of the underlying securities. The investment holds securities issued by specified companies, traded on U.S. stock markets that, when initially selected, were involved in the wireless telecommunications industry. Except when a reconstitution event, distribution of securities by an underlying issuer or other event occurs, the group of companies will not change.
