Mobile Games Captured $90.4B, 49% Of Global Market In 2023

Adjust’s 2024 Mobile App Trends report shows that mobile games accounted for 49% of the global games market revenue in 2023, totaling $90.4 billion.

As reported by GamesIndustry.biz, the study — which analyzed data from January 2022 to January 2024 — noted a 6% year-over-year increase in in-app revenue for game apps.

Overall consumer spending, however, declined by 2%, reaching $107 billion.

Top apps for consumer spending included Microsoft Corp.‘s MSFT Candy Crush Saga, Tencent Holdings Ltd‘s TCEHY Honour of Kings, Roblox Corp.’s RBLX Roblox, Royal Match, and Coin Master. Adjust projects that advertising expenditure will grow significantly, reaching $103 billion in 2024 and $131 billion in 2025.

Despite a global decline in mobile game installs and sessions by 2% and 7% respectively, Q4 2023 showed a slight recovery with a 7% year-over-year increase in installs.

The LATAM region experienced the highest growth in installs at 19%, followed by Europe, Middle East and Africa at 12%, North America at 6%, and Asia-Pacific at 3%.

In terms of worldwide downloads in 2023, Subway Surfers led the rankings, followed by Free Fire, Roblox, Ludo King, and Candy Crush Saga.

Among game genres, action games held the largest share of installs at 18%, with hyper casual and puzzle games each capturing 14%. Action games also boasted the highest session rate at 27%, with puzzle and sports genres following at 12%, board games at 7%, and casual games at 6%.
