Volkswagen AG VWAGY is set to fast-track its efforts in e-mobility, prioritizing budget-friendly electric vehicles.
At a recent works meeting held at its Wolfsburg headquarters, Thomas Schäfer, CEO of the Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand, presented plans for the future of the core brand.
The automaker is set to introduce a new entry-level electric model, priced around 20,000 euros ($20,725), with a production version expected by 2027.
The vehicle, expected to appeal to a broad consumer base, will be unveiled as a show car in early March.
Affordable entry-level electric mobility will play a key role in the brand’s future strategy. Alongside the production version of the ID. 2all, the upcoming electric model is part of a new family of small electric cars being developed within the Volkswagen Group’s Brand Group Core.
This family of models will include compact, all-electric vehicles built on the next phase of the modular electric drive platform.
The first vehicle in this lineup will be the production model of the ID. 2all, slated to hit dealerships in 2026 as Volkswagen’s debut all-electric small car, with a starting price under 25,000 euros.
The brand aims to expand its portfolio, with nine new models set to launch by 2027. Additionally, Volkswagen’s new Scalable Systems Platform, a next-gen platform for fully electric, fully digitalized vehicles, is designed to improve scalability and production efficiency.
Volkswagen has already gained momentum in the electric vehicle sector with over 1.35 million ID. vehicles sold globally since 2019.
Schäfer highlighted that Wolfsburg plant will continue to be the center of innovation and production for Volkswagen, underscoring that the factory will be integral to the development of future electric models.
“The Wolfsburg plant has a clear future ahead. By relocating Golf production to Mexico, we are creating space for modern technologies. New production processes will be introduced in Hall 54. Our goal is to build the next-generation electric Golf on the new SSP platform there, along with the high-volume electric T-Roc. This will establish Wolfsburg as the capital of our new all-electric compact class,” said Schäfer.
Price Action: VWAGY shares closed lower by 1.20% at $9.92 on Wednesday.
