Stocks trade mixed after Alcoa results fall short

Stock market holds to tight range after Alcoa results miss expectations; Traders look to Intel

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks traded in a tight range Tuesday after earnings from Alcoa Inc. fell short of analysts’ expectations.

The modest moves come a day after the Dow Jones industrial average closed above 11,000 for the first time in a year and a half. The market has been logging steady gains for the past two months on signs of economic growth.

The results from Alcoa brought a disappointing start to the parade of earnings from the January-March quarter. The aluminum manufacturer’s quarterly loss narrowed from a year earlier but its adjusted earnings and revenue came in below analysts’ estimates.

Alcoa is the first of the 30 stocks that make up the Dow to report results.
