Where once communicating machines were considered a product of science fiction, today they’re a hard-cut slice of reality.
Amazon, Samsung, and Alphabet – amongst many others – have created smart devices that can control television, automatically recalibrate temperate settings, assign recipes for ingredients in the fridge and even remind owners of their daily tasks. This array of intelligent features suggests a new evolution in the relationship between humans and technology, but there are problems brimming beneath the surface.
While smart home devices have grown rapidly around the world, they’re still far from being standard home appliances. One of the greatest hindrances to smart device growth has been the lack of interoperability between smart devices. A smart home platform designed by one company, for example, is extremely unlikely to control smart devices designed by other companies. This shortcoming has disgruntled consumers worldwide.
In response to this, the Connectivity Standard Alliance (CSA), an international community of more than 550 technology companies committed to the Internet of Things (IoT), announced the release of the Matter standard, an industry-wide protocol that aims to make IoT devices interoperable.
Under this standard, all smart device devices with the “Matter” certification will be interoperable. “Matter,” is, therefore, more than just a protocol – it’s a solution to a major IoT industry problem, and it is backed by some of the biggest names in the sector.
Tuya Smart: A Matter Protocol Pioneer
Armed with more than 647,000 developers, Tuya Smart TUYA (HKEX: 2391) has strategically positioned itself as one of the pioneers of the Matter movement. Founded in 2014, Tuya Smart has grown into a global IoT development platform service provider, bringing smart solutions to more than 8,400 customers around the world.
Working hand-in-hand with the CSA, Tuya Smart has launched several solutions for the new Matter protocol, enabling global customers to quickly transition into Matter compliance. Because of its extensive history and success in the industry, Tuya has several competitive advantages over other operators in this space.
Tuya’s Matter “smartification” solutions, for example, rank amongst the quickest in the world. Tuya’s solutions can take a completely non-smart product line and transform it into a Matter-compliant, high-quality smart portfolio in record time. Even for smart devices that do not meet the Matter standard, Tuya’s Matter solutions can help connect non-Matter devices with their Matter-counterparts, improving communication and interoperability.
Tuya’s expertise in the IoT field is eclectic. The company has created an IoT development platform that includes three main parts: a production development platform, an App development platform, and cloud development platform, allowing customers to control and operate smart devices remotely. It can create customized platform functions that optimize the user experience. Perhaps most importantly, based on the capacity of Tuya’s IoT development platform and Tuya’s Matter solution, it can provide full-service support to operators developing Matter products, including handling all the highly technical components of the transition from hardware to software.
CleanLife “Smartifies” Its LED Lighting With Tuya, Realizing Instant Success
Tuya Smart recently showcased the efficacy of its unique Matter solutions with CleanLife.
CleanLife, a global lighting industry enterprise, partnered with Tuya Smart in late 2021 and was one of the first companies to adopt the Matter protocol. With Tuya Smart as its partner, CleanLife was able to “smartify” its LED lighting product line by integrating Wi-Fi and Bluetooth technology into LED strips, panel lights, and bulbs.
CleanLife has been an innovator in the smart lighting space, with its mission of “Finding a Better Way” to illuminate the world. With the goal of making traditional lighting obsolete, the company has set out to make traditional lighting not only more energy efficient, but also clean with LED. The company established its smart lighting division about five years ago and has been successful in pushing innovation to the limit, which has resulted in more value for their customers.
Before its partnership with Tuya Smart, CleanLife’s product line had been in the LED lighting industry for ten years. The company was able to enter a new, tech-savvy market using Tuya Smart’s IoT solutions, which helped it quickly develop a high-quality, private-label application for its customers. CleanLife’s products are now found in major retailers like Lowe’s and digital marketplaces like Amazon.
Given the success of its first products, CleanLife is now looking to offer additional smart lighting devices and expand its product portfolio. Its partnership with Tuya Smart was pivotal in the successful expansion into the “smart lighting” market.
As Justin Miller, CEO of CleanLife, said at the Tuya Day event at CES, “Since our collaboration with Tuya in 2017, Tuya continuously supports us with product development, and they always share us with new ideas and opportunities. This mutual partnership has been extremely beneficial in helping us become an industry leader in smart lighting. Now, Matter gives our brand and products more credibility to be able to work with the prominent brands that are a part of the Alliance through shared interoperability and allow easier integration with mainstream smart device systems such as Apple Home, Samsung Smart Things, etc. And with Tuya’s matter solution and help, we strongly believe that we can easily and quickly pivot our plans to Matter compatible. We expect Matter to help expedite the path to market and enhance user experience for the whole industry and provide a platform for all 220+ brands in the Alliance to succeed together.”
The Future of IoT
Tuya Smart has cemented itself as a global leader in the development of Matter-certified smart products, but it’s not stopping there.
Operating alongside CSA members, Tuya Smart aims to continue to improve the Matter standard in the years to come. The goal is to create a global-recognized standard for all smart-home devices and to allow the “smartification” of nearly any device in the world.
"Since its inception, Tuya has been committed to breaking the barriers down between different smart products’ brands and categories and creating a more open and neutral ecosystem for the global smart industry, which is fully in line with the original purpose of Matter. Up till now, Tuya has launched solutions for Matter and has won many customers’ hearts. In the future, Tuya will continue to work with its customers and partners across the globe to promote Matter in more scenarios and markets. We also believe that the era of connecting everything intelligently will come faster with our joint efforts," said Alex Yang, co-founder and COO of Tuya Smart at Matter’s Global Media Conference in Amsterdam on November 3rd, 2022.
