Meta Platforms Inc. META is adding age verification tools to Facebook Dating to ensure that only adults can use the service.
What Happened: On Monday, Meta announced the expansion of the age verification test to Facebook Dating in the U.S. The platform requires users to be 18 or above to sign up for and access Facebook Dating services.
According to Meta, age verification tools will prevent "people under the age of 18 from accessing experiences meant for adults."
If the social media tech giant detects a minor trying to use Facebook Dating, it will prompt them to verify their age using two options — by uploading a video selfie or an ID proof.

If the user chooses the video selfie option, they'll be asked to take a video selfie, which will then be shared with Yoti — a company specializing in online age verification. Yoti's technology will estimate the user's age based on facial features.
Similarly, users can upload a form of identification if they choose the second option. Once the user uploads a copy of their ID, it will be used to verify their age.
Why It's Important: This isn't the first time Meta has brought an update to ensure age-appropriate experiences for users.
In October, Meta's Instagram expanded the testing of AI age verification tools globally.
In November, Meta announced it was testing ways to limit teenagers' unwanted interactions by limiting messages from unknown adults.
