Anthropic Challenges OpenAI With Major Claude Chatbot Update

Google-backed AI startup Anthropic has announced substantial improvements to its Claude chatbot in a significant update, posing a challenge to competitor OpenAI.

What Happened: Anthropic has rolled out a new update to its Claude chatbot. The update includes a massive increase in token processing capability, with Pro tier users now able to process up to 200,000 tokens at once, equivalent to more than 500 pages of material, reported The Verge.

This doubles the chatbot’s previous limit and far exceeds the 32,000-token limit of GPT-4.

Alongside the token increase, the chatbot’s tendency to “hallucinate” has been reduced while its functionality for tasks such as web searches and calculations has been enhanced. Other improvements include support for custom, persistent instructions, a new test window for trying out prompts, and improvements to the developer console.

The update also introduced the ability to connect API tools, but this feature is currently in beta. Interestingly, Claude will automatically select the most suitable tool for the task based on the context.

Why It Matters: This update comes on the heels of chaos at rival OpenAI, with Sam Altman set to return as CEO and a new board being established. With Anthropic, founded by former OpenAI engineers, making significant strides with its chatbot, the competition in the AI field continues to intensify.
