Dynacraft Parcel Delivery or DPD has currently been grappling with an artificial intelligence misfire after its AI chatbot went rogue, hurling insults at a customer and criticizing the company.
What Happened: The unexpected behavior of DPD’s AI chatbot came to light following an update last week that subsequently led to the use of unbecoming language and negative comments about the company. The erring chatbot segment was promptly disabled by DPD as the firm endeavors to optimize its system, reported BBC.
We have operated an AI element within the chat successfully for a number of years,” said DPD in a statement, adding, “An error occurred after a system update yesterday. The AI element was immediately disabled and is currently being updated.”
A customer, Ashley Beauchamp, brought the chatbot’s misconduct to public attention via a post on X (formerly Twitter), which displayed the chatbot’s malfunction. The post quickly gained traction, amassing over 800,000 views within just a day.
Beauchamp shared how the chatbot when prompted, penned a poem that criticized DPD and used inappropriate language. “It also swore at me.”
The customer was also able to coax the chatbot into describing DPD as the “worst delivery firm in the world” and even got the bot to express its contempt for DPD in the form of a haiku, a type of Japanese poem.
Why It Matters: Interestingly, this is not a stand-alone incident.
In December, General Motors’ subsidiary Chevrolet experienced a similar chatbot malfunction when their AI chatbot was gaslit into telling users that the company's rival Tesla's cars were better. It even wrote codes and agreed to sell a car for $1 before the chat feature was disabled.
Just earlier this month, it was reported that Amazon's AI chatbot dubbed as "Q" has been facing fire as it generated incorrect outputs for users, indicating that it must be hallucinating.
According to an October 2023 report, the AI chatbot market is poised for substantial expansion in the foreseeable future, primarily propelled by increasing demands within sectors such as Healthcare, Retail, BFSI, Media & Entertainment, Travel & Tourism, E-commerce, and others.
The report further stated that the projected size of the AI Chatbot Market is anticipated to achieve a multimillion-dollar valuation by 2029. However, these growing pains need to be addressed to fully leverage the potential benefits of these technologies.
