The Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals officially pulled the plug <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/regulations/25/01/42779998/6th-circuit-strikes-down-fcc-net-neutrality-rules-in-blow-to-biden-administrations-internet-regulation-agenda">on net neutrality</a>.
What Happened: On Jan. 2, the court ruled that the Federal Communications Commission lacks legal authority to reclassify broadband as a "telecommunications service" under Title II of the Communications Act. 
Instead, a three-judge panel of the Cincinnati-based Sixth Circuit declared that broadband is an &#8220;information service.&#8221; This distinction matters because "information services" are subject to lighter regulatory oversight.
The court essentially overturned rules first established under the Obama administration in 2015, which prohibited ISPs from throttling speeds, blocking access, or prioritizing certain websites or services for a fee. 
The first Trump administration repealed those rules in 2017. The FCC voted last April to reinstate net neutrality by reclassifying broadband. The attempt received a decisive burial under the new ruling, marking a major defeat for the outgoing Biden administration.

FCC Chair Jessica Rosenworcel, a staunch supporter of net neutrality, is urging Congress to step in and legislate an open internet.
&#8220;Consumers across the country have told us again and again that they want an internet that is fast, open and fair. With this decision it is clear that Congress now needs to heed their call, take up the charge for net neutrality and put open internet principles in federal law,&#8221; she said. 
Meanwhile, incoming FCC chair Brendan Carr, who voted against net neutrality's reinstatement in 2024, welcomed the court&#8217;s decision. He called Biden's attempt to restore the rules an "internet power grab."
"President Biden's entire plan rested on the Chicken Little tactic of persuading Americans that the Internet would break in the absence of these so-called ‘net neutrality' regulations," Carr said in a <a href="https://docs.fcc.gov/public/attachments/DOC-408580A1.pdf">statement</a>.
Former FCC chair Ajit Pai also praised the court's decision, urging a focus on expanding internet access rather than resurrecting net neutrality.

Globally, 48 countries have committed to adopting <a href="https://www.coindesk.com/policy/2023/11/10/international-deal-to-combat-crypto-tax-evasion-to-start-2027-as-48-countries-sign-up&amp;sa=D&amp;source=docs&amp;ust=1733436753554134&amp;usg=AOvVaw015S18_F6jLotHdSu02pLH" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">a tax transparency standard</a> by 2027, introducing the automatic exchange of information between jurisdictions to combat tax evasion on cryptocurrency platforms.
Other countries like the UK already have plans for their <a href="https://www.herbertsmithfreehills.com/notes/fsrandcorpcrime/2024-posts/crypto-roadmap-crypto-regulatory-regime-live-2026" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">crypto regulation regime</a> to go live in 2026, establishing clearer rules for digital assets and crypto exchange operations. Similarly, <a href="https://dig.watch/updates/south-korea-postpones-crypto-tax-to-2027" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">South Korea</a> is preparing to implement crypto taxation policies by 2027. 
Simultaneously, traditional financial institutions will likelo deepen their involvement in the crypto sector. Beginning in January 2026, banks will be required to disclose their exposure to digital assets, signaling a closer integration of traditional finance and cryptocurrencies.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Banking the Unbanked&nbsp;</h2>
Despite the various developments in traditional finance, financial inclusion is still a mirage due to the many limitations the average person experiences. For instance, banks are centralized and they have rigorous processes that make them favorable to some than others. For instance, <a href="https://www.bankofamerica.com/deposits/checking/explore-advantage-banking/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">Bank of America</a> has a minimum opening deposit of up to $100, depending on the type of account you choose. Other banks may charge various fees, including transaction fees of up to 3%, monthly maintenance fees, and wire transfer charges that eat deep into people's savings. 
However, not everyone still gets access to these financial services, as many banks, including JP Morgan Chase and Wells Fargo, still primarily operate in urban or metropolitan areas and have limited remote service options. According to the World Bank, <a href="https://www.worldbank.org/en/topic/financialinclusion/overview#:~:text=Great%20strides%20have%20been%20made,adult%20population%20had%20an%20account." target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">1.4 billion people</a> (17% of the global population) had no bank accounts as of 2021. That's where cryptocurrencies and decentralized finance as instruments for inclusive financing methods come in. 
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Decentralized Loan and Investment Services&nbsp;</h2>
Traditional banks and lenders offer various loan products. However,  it's almost impossible to access loans in some countries because of their strict paperwork, bureaucracy, and record-high interest rates. The average lending rate offered by banks in 2023 based on 83 countries was <a href="https://www.theglobaleconomy.com/rankings/lending_interest_rate/#:~:text=Lending%20interest%20rate%20%2D%20Country%20rankings&amp;text=The%20average%20for%202023%20based%20on%2083%20countries%20was%2014.19%20percent.">14.19%</a>, while the general average lending rate across all tokens and crypto platforms is approximately <a href="https://defirate.com/lend/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">6.06%</a>. ​​
Currently, decentralized protocols and platforms offer crypto loans and investment services like yield farming and crypto lending to users. These DeFi features are similar to what's obtainable in traditional banking, allowing customers to get collateralized crypto loans.&nbsp;
However, these <a href="https://www.figuremarkets.com/resources/insights/everything-you-need-to-know-about-crypto-loans/#:~:text=Unlike%20traditional%20loans%20that%20typically,itself%20reduces%20the%20lender's%20risk." target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">decentralized crypto loans</a> are more convenient to get. They require no paperwork or credit score checks. They are also disbursed instantly, making them more accessible. For instance, the average loan approval rate on DeFi protocols is nearly 100% if the demands are met. Conversely, <a href="https://www.statista.com/statistics/754738/small-businesses-loan-approval-rates-usa/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">big banks</a> only approved about 13% of loans for small businesses in 2023. 
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Expanding Role of Crypto in Payment Systems</h2>
Businesses are increasingly integrating crypto payments into web platforms to introduce secure, cost-efficient transactions. That's why they boast a higher number of crypto wallets than their older counterparts.&nbsp;

In December, I noticed an article from Barron&rsquo;s that discussed why Greece&rsquo;s turnaround is underway. John Paulson, the hedge fund guy, is big on the Greek markets.&nbsp;




&ldquo;Greece&rsquo;s stock market is already up 40% so far this year, and some major investors expect it has more room to run. Hedge fund billionaire John Paulson, a long-time investor in the country, is bullish and looking for more opportunities,&rdquo; wrote Barron&rsquo;s contributor Patti Domm on Dec. 19.





&ldquo;&lsquo;One measure is the value of the stock market to the total economy. It&rsquo;s about 30% in Greece today. The previous peak was 80%, and the European average has been 80%,&rsquo; Paulson said.&rdquo;




The difficulty for the average do-it-yourself is finding Greek stocks to buy that aren&rsquo;t over-the-counter. As of Dec. 31, 2023, GREK&rsquo;s one-year return was 42.7%. Over the past five years, its annualized return was 15.1%. That&rsquo;s slightly better than the S&amp;P 500.

As I look at the bank&rsquo;s Q3 2021 press release, its CET1 capital ratio stands out as a big positive at <a href="https://www.nbg.gr/-/jssmedia/Files/Group/enhmerwsh-ependutwn/Press-Releases/NBG-3Q23-Results-Press-Release-E.pdf?rev=490d366017054774867c049919b7cdbf&amp;_gl=1&#x2A;1neogtp&#x2A;_ga&#x2A;MTU5OTIxNTU4My4xNzA1NDI0ODYw&#x2A;_up&#x2A;MQ..&#x2A;_ga_44Y14P97V7&#x2A;MTcwNTQyNDg1OS4xLjAuMTcwNTQyNDg2OS4wLjAuMA..">17.9%</a>, up from 17.3% in Q2 2023 and 15.2% a year ago. By comparison, JPMorgan Chase&rsquo;s (NYSE:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/jpm-stock-quote/">JPM</a>) CET1 ratio was <a href="https://www.jpmorganchase.com/content/dam/jpmc/jpmorgan-chase-and-co/investor-relations/documents/quarterly-earnings/2023/3rd-quarter/fa584ba1-9ee9-4b87-8ac4-eb9be0e9744b.pdf">14.3%</a> at the end of September.&nbsp;



Now, I&rsquo;m not suggesting it&rsquo;s in the same league as Jamie Dimon&rsquo;s baby, but it&rsquo;s much better than what one might expect from a Greek bank.



With 35.32 billion euros ($38.40 billion) in loans and 56.29 billion euros ($61.20 billion) in deposits, it&rsquo;s more than holding its own with banks in other emerging markets.&nbsp;



<h2>Coca-Cola HBC (CCHGY)&nbsp;&nbsp;</h2>

Coca-Cola HBC (OTCMKTS:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/cchgy-stock-quote/">CCHGY</a>) bottles and sells Coca-Cola (NYSE:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/ko-stock-quote/">KO</a>) products in <a href="https://www.coca-colahellenic.com/en/about-us/at-a-glance">29 countries</a>, including Egypt, its newest market, which it entered in <a href="https://www.beveragedaily.com/Article/2022/01/13/Coca-Cola-HBC-AG-completes-acquisition-of-majority-stake-in-Coca-Cola-Bottling-Company-of-Egypt">January 2022</a>, with the acquisition of 52.7% of the Coca-Cola Bottling Company of Egypt. Later that month, it acquired an additional <a href="https://tools.euroland.com/tools/Pressreleases/GetPressRelease/?ID=4035753&amp;lang=en-GB&amp;companycode=ch-cch&amp;v=">42%</a>. It now holds 94.7%.&nbsp;&nbsp;



Other countries in<a href="https://www.coca-colahellenic.com/en/about-us/who-we-are/where-we-operate" target="_blank"> which it operates include Austria</a>, Ireland, Croatia, Latvia, Belarus, Nigeria and Greece.&nbsp;



The Greek portion of its business <a href="https://www.coca-colahellenic.com/en/about-us/who-we-are/history" target="_blank">started in 1969</a> as the Hellenic Bottling Company based in Athens. In 1991, its shares were listed on the Athens Stock Exchange. On Aug. 9, 2000, <a href="https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1190713/000095012303012650/u46807fv4.htm#:~:text=CCHBC%20was%20formed%20on%20August,and%20Coca%2DCola%20Beverages%20plc." target="_blank">Hellenic merged with Coca-Cola Beverages plc</a> to form Coca-Cola Hellenic Bottling Company. It listed its ADS&rsquo; (American Depositary Shares) on the NYSE in October 2002.&nbsp;



However, once it was listed on the London Stock Exchange in April 2013, its NYSE listing became redundant. It was delisted on <a href="https://www.manufacturing-supply-chain.com/coca-cola-hbc-to-delist-from-new-york-stock-exchange/">July 24, 2014</a>. The company officially moved to Zug, Switzerland, in April 2013 to lower its corporate tax rate. The European Parliament&rsquo;s November 2015 report on multinational corporate taxation suggests the company saved <a href="https://www.europarl.europa.eu/cmsdata/93083/Coca-Cola.pdf">30 million euros</a> ($32.6 million) in tax in 2014 alone.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;



The company&rsquo;s been busy in the last couple of years making acquisitions. In August 2022, it acquired the super-premium Three Cents brand of mixers for <a href="https://tools.euroland.com/tools/Pressreleases/GetPressRelease/?ID=4148267&amp;lang=en-GB&amp;companycode=ch-cch&amp;v=">45 million</a> euros ($48.9 million). In June 2023, it made an even bigger splash, acquiring Finlandia vodka from Brown-Forman (NYSE:<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/bf.b-stock-quote/">BF.B</a>) for <a href="https://tools.euroland.com/tools/Pressreleases/GetPressRelease/?ID=4343492&amp;lang=en-GB&amp;companycode=ch-cch&amp;v=">$220 million</a>. Coca-Cola HBC distributed the product for 17 years, so it was a logical choice to purchase the brand from the maker of Jack Daniels.&nbsp;&nbsp;



If you want an even safer way to play it, Coca-Cola <a href="https://www.coca-colahellenic.com/en/investor-relations/shareholder-centre/shareholder-structure" target="_blank">owns 21% of Coca-Cola HBC</a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
