<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Critics Say Offsets Aren't Enough</h2>
<p>While carbon offsets are helpful, some experts say they are not a perfect fix. The International Energy Agency <a href="https://www.iea.org/energy-system/carbon-capture-utilisation-and-storage/direct-air-capture">explains</a> that removing pollution from the air with this kind of technology is still very expensive and uses a lot of energy. It would be much better to stop the pollution from being created in the first place.</p>
<p>Critics and environmental groups say Gates&#8217; regular use of jets sends the wrong message, particularly when the wealthy are being closely examined for their oversize environmental impact. <p>Gates has been surprisingly frank about his jet habits. In a 2021 60 Minutes interview, he admitted, "I probably have one of the highest greenhouse gas footprints on the planet … My personal flying alone is gigantic." Still, he says he tries to make up for it by using things like plant-based fuel for his jets, driving an electric car, installing solar panels at home and paying $7 million each year to offset his pollution.</p>
<p>Despite his efforts, critics believe Gates – and others like him, including Bezos (who also <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/12/42509430/jeff-bezos-with-a-fleet-of-four-private-jets-including-the-fastest-gulfstream-is-offloading-one-for-a-whoppi">owns four private jets</a>), Musk, Cuban, Swift and countless other billionaires and millionaires – need to lead by example, especially when urging the world to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels.</p>

<p><strong>Afya Limited (NASDAQ:</strong><a href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AFYA#NASDAQ"><strong>AFYA</strong></a><strong>, B3: A2FY34)) ("Afya" or the "Company"),</strong> the leading medical education group and medical practice solutions provider in Brazil, announced today that it has entered into a share purchase agreement for the acquisition, through its wholly-owned subsidiary Afya Participações S.A., of 100% of the total share capital of Faculdade Masterclass Ltda. ("Faculdade Única de Contagem" or "FUNIC"), present in Contagem (MG).</p>
<p>The acquisition will add 60 medical school seats to Afya in Contagem, a city in the metropolitan area of Belo Horizonte, the capital of Minas Gerais. FUNIC is pre-operational, with leased real estate prepared for the start of the medical school operation. It will be Afya's fifth medical school in Minas Gerais and will serve as an academic hub for the other medical campuses in the state. Afya will confirm the expected timing of the first intake, contingent on the completion date of the closing process.</p>
<p>The aggregate purchase price is R$ 100 million, and the Net Debt will be deducted at closing. The price and payment conditions are R$ 60 million will be paid in cash at the closing date, and R$ 40 million will be paid in three annual installments adjusted by the Brazilian interbank interest rates ("CDI").</p>
<p>Furthermore, there is a potential for 60 additional seats. If approved by the Ministry of Education ("MEC") within 36 months from the closing date, it will result in an additional payment of R$ 1 million per granted seat, limited to 60 seats.</p>
<p>Afya expects an EV/EBITDA of 3.3x at full maturity and post synergies in 2030 with expected Net Revenues of R$ 52.4 million, of which 100% will come from Medicine.</p>

Afya To Acquire Faculdade Única De Contagem For R$100M, Adding 60 Medical School Seats In Minas Gerais With Potential For 60 More, Targeting R$52.4M Annual Revenue And 3.3x EV/EBITDA By 2030

<p><strong>FuelCell Energy Inc</strong> (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FCEL#NASDAQ">FCEL</a>) shares are trading lower after the company <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/24/12/g42573324/fuelcell-energy-reports-fourth-quarter-and-full-fiscal-year-2024-results" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">reported its fourth quarter 2024 results.</a></p>
<p>The company&#8217;s total revenues grew 120% year-over-year to $49.326 million, beating the consensus of $39.716 million.</p>
<p>Product revenues rose to $25.4 million for the three months ending October 31, 2024, from $10.5 million a year earlier. The increase was driven by $18.0 million from the GGE Agreement for fuel cell module replacements in Korea and $7.7 million from a sales contract with <strong>Ameresco </strong>for a 2.8 MW platform for the Sacramento Sewer District.</p>
<p>Service agreements revenue rose to $5.6 million from $(0.8) million, driven by two module exchanges during the quarter. Generation revenue increased 40.3% to $12.0 million due to the <strong>Toyota </strong>and <strong>Derby </strong>projects.</p>
<p>Advanced Technologies revenue grew to $6.4 million, supported by <strong>ExxonMobil</strong>&#8216;s Rotterdam project and government contracts, offset by $0.8 million lower revenue from the EMTEC Joint Development Agreement.</p>
<p>The company reported a loss per share of $2.21, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/earnings" rel="noreferrer noopener">missing the consensus loss of $1.75</a>. The company reported a gross loss of $10.9 million, down from the previous year&#8217;s $1.5 million loss.</p>
<p>Operating expenses for the quarter decreased to $30.1 million from $34.9 million the previous year. Adjusted EBITDA loss improved to $25.3 million in the quarter from the $30.8 million loss a year ago.</p>
<p>In November, FCEL announced a <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/guidance/24/11/42011849/restructure-and-recharge-fuelcell-cuts-workforce-plans-to-reduce-operating-costs-by-15-in-2025" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">global restructuring </a>in the U.S., Canada, and Germany to reduce operating costs by 15% in fiscal 2025, including a 13% workforce reduction. Delays in solid oxide and carbon capture product timelines mean it will <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/calendars/guidance" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">not meet revenue targets provided in fiscal 2022. </a></p>
<p>However, FuelCell expects a material revenue improvement in fiscal 2025, driven by contracted deliveries, including replacement modules for GGE.</p>
<p>As of October 31, 2024, FuelCell&nbsp;had $318.0 million in cash, restricted cash, and short-term investments, down from $403.3 million in 2023. This included $148.1 million in unrestricted cash, $109.1 million in investments, and $60.8 million in restricted cash.</p>
<p>During the quarter, the company sold 1.9 million shares under its Amended Open Market Sale Agreement at $11.23 per share, generating $21.5 million in gross proceeds and $20.8 million net after $0.6 million in fees.</p>
<p>As of October 31, 2024, FCEL&#8217;s backlog rose 13.1% to $1.16 billion year-over-year, driven by the GGE Agreement. The backlog includes product, service, and generation agreements, with a weighted average term of 16 years.</p>
<p><strong>Price Action:</strong> FCEL shares are trading lower by 3.05% at $9.52 at the last check Thursday.</p>
