What Happened: The State Council Customs Tariff Commission announced on Tuesday that it will be imposing tariffs on certain US imports, effective from Feb. 10. The decision comes in response to the U.S. government&#8217;s decision to levy a 10% tariff on all Chinese goods.
According to the announcement, the tariffs will be as follows:
1. A 15% tariff on coal and liquefied natural gas (LNG).
2. A 10% tariff on crude oil, agricultural machinery, high-displacement vehicles, and pickup trucks.

The turbine will combine Baker Hughes&#8217; gas turbine technology with Hanwha&#8217;s ammonia combustion system.
Baker and Hanwha plan to complete full engine testing with ammonia by the end of 2027, after which the ~16MW turbine will be available for commercial orders.
Argent LNG Contract: The company has been chosen by Argent LNG as the liquefaction solution and services provider for its proposed LNG <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/25/02/g43427007/argent-lng-selects-baker-hughes-as-technology-provider-strengthening-project" rel="noreferrer noopener">export facility in Port Fourchon, Louisiana</a>.
Baker Hughes will supply liquefaction technology, power generation equipment, and gas compression systems for the facility, which aims to produce approximately 24 MTPA of LNG.
Last month, Baker Hughes reported fourth-quarter adjusted EPS&nbsp;of $0.70, beating the consensus of $0.63 and sales&nbsp;of $7.36 billion, exceeding <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/25/01/g43356061/baker-hughes-announces-fourth-quarter-and-full-year-2024-results" rel="noreferrer noopener">the street view of&nbsp;$7.08 billion</a>.

Baker Hughes Lands ExxonMobil Guyana Deal, Partners With Hanwha On Ammonia Turbines

U.S. stock futures dropped sharply on Monday after U.S. President Donald Trump imposed tariffs on three of its major trade partners, Canada, China, and Mexico.
The new tariffs will begin Tuesday, with a 10% levy on China and a 25% levy on a few Canadian and Mexican imports, each. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce warns of supply chain disruptions and higher family costs, citing concerns over trade with Mexico worth $46 billion in agricultural products, and Canada valued at $97 billion in energy supplied.
The U.S. dollar index strengthened over 1% following this announcement.
All major index futures were down, with the Russell 2000 falling more than 2%. This drop comes after the indices had posted gains for three consecutive weeks.
Companies reporting earnings this week include Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMZN#NASDAQ">AMZN</a>), Google parent Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GOOGL#NASDAQ">GOOGL</a>) (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GOOG#NASDAQ">GOOG</a>), Palantir Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PLTR#NASDAQ">PLTR</a>), and Fortinet Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FTNT#NASDAQ">FTNT</a>).
The 10-year Treasury yield stood at 4.54%, while the two-year yield was at 4.27%. According to the CME Group's FedWatch <a href="https://www.cmegroup.com/markets/interest-rates/cme-fedwatch-tool.html">tool</a>, there is an 86.5% chance that the Federal Reserve will keep interest rates unchanged for the March meeting.

The SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>) and Invesco QQQ Trust ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QQQ#NASDAQ">QQQ</a>) both experienced negative premarket trading on Monday. SPY fell 1.51% to $592.76, and QQQ plunged 1.72% to $513.33, according to <a href="https://pro.benzinga.com/dashboard">Benzinga Pro</a> data.
Cues From The Last Session
Energy, IT, and materials stocks led the decline on Friday as the U.S. markets reacted to new tariffs on the country's three largest suppliers &#8211; Canada, Mexico, and China.
Communication services and consumer discretionary stocks were exceptions. The news overshadowed strong earnings from Exxon Mobil Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XOM#NYSE">XOM</a>).
On the economic front, the U.S. personal income rose 0.4% in December (up from 0.3% in November), while personal spending climbed 0.7% to an annualized rate of $20.387 trillion. The core PCE price index increased 0.2%.

Insights From Analysts
The newly issued tariffs as highlighted by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will be used to bring manufacturing back to the U.S. It will also be used to raise revenues to help pay for extending Trump&#8217;s 2017 tax cuts and as a lever to negotiate with other countries as an alternative to sanctions.
However, Ed Yardeni and Eric Wallerstein in their QuickTakes note mentioned that &#8220;During Trump 1.0, tariff hikes by the U.S. seem to have depressed merchandise imports in 2018 and 2019. But they also depressed U.S. exports because global economic growth was weakened by trade tensions.&#8221;
Ryan Detrick, the chief market strategist at Carson Research highlighted in an X post that February is historically the worst month during a post-election year.

He added that the S&amp;P 500 has been up eight of the past nine quarters. &#8220;One of these days it&#8217;ll fall and that is perfectly normal.&#8221;
According to Ivan Martchev, investment strategist at Navellier &amp; Associates, &#8220;Seasonality is not a promise.&#8221;
Martchev highlighted that December was supposed to be strong, but it turned out to be weak. He added that since 1928, September has been the weakest seasonal month, but last year only the first week was down while the rest of the month was strong.
&#8220;So as we approach February which is weak over the long term, we must remember that seasonality is a guideline, but it can deviate widely each year,&#8221; he added.

Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XOM#NYSE">XOM</a>) reported stronger-than-expected fourth-quarter earnings.
On the economic data front, U.S. personal income increased 0.4% month-over-month in December compared to a 0.3% gain in November. Personal spending climbed by 0.7% month-over-month to an annualized rate of $20.387 trillion in December. The core PCE price index in the US increased by 0.2% from the previous month for December.
Most sectors on the S&amp;P 500 closed on a negative note, with energy, information technology, and materials stocks recording losses on Friday. However, communication services and consumer discretionary stocks bucked the overall market trend, closing the session higher.
The Dow Jones closed lower by around 337 points to 44,544.66 on Thursday. The S&amp;P 500 fell 0.50% to 6,040.53, while the Nasdaq Composite fell 0.28% at 19,627.44 during Friday's session.

Shares of oil and gas companies are trading lower as investors evaluate the February 1st tariff deadline for Mexico, Canada and China.

Major stock indices have completed their recovery following Monday's sharp drop, buoyed by tech stocks rallying on the back of solid earnings <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/econ-s">and positive macroeconomic data.</a>
The S&amp;P 500 index stands at 6,118 points at midday trading in New York, not far from the all-time high of 6,128 points reached last Friday.
The Personal Consumption Expenditure price index — the Fed's preferred inflation gauge — <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/25/01/43390001/feds-favorite-inflation-gauge-rises-as-predicted-consumer-spending-jumps-at-fastest-pace-in-9-months">came in line with expectations in December</a>, easing market participants&#8217; concerns over interest rates. Fed futures continue to reflect expectations for two rate cuts by the end of the year.
Meanwhile, personal spending posted a robust 0.7% increase in December, signaling strong consumer appetite in the final month of the year — a promising sign for corporate earnings.
The Magnificent Seven — as tracked by the Roundhill Magnificent Seven ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MAGS#NASDAQ">MAGS</a>) – soared 1.6% on Friday, effectively erasing weekly losses after plunging as much as 3.1% on Monday due to the DeepSeek selloff.
Yet, within the elite group, NVIDIA Corp. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>) remains 12% lower than last Friday's close, with Friday&#8217;s gains primarily driven by Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) and Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMZN#NASDAQ">AMZN</a>)

Investors await the Personal Consumption Expenditure data for December, which will be released before the market opens.
The 10-year Treasury yield is currently at 4.53%, and the two-year yield is at 4.21%. The CME Group&#8217;s FedWatch <a href="https://www.cmegroup.com/markets/interest-rates/cme-fedwatch-tool.htm">tool </a>indicates an 82% probability that the Federal Open Market Committee will maintain current interest rates in March 2025.

Insights From Analysts
According to the analysts at BlackRock, strong corporate earnings have set the tone for the fourth-quarter season in swing.
&#8220;Even with higher-for-longer interest rates, we think U.S. stocks can keep outperforming this year. We stay overweight. Resilient economic growth is helping sectors beyond tech. That's partly driven by artificial intelligence (AI) spurring earnings beyond the initial winners during an economic transformation and policy change, we think. Yet we eye risks to risk appetite changing this year depending on earnings and policy.&#8221;
With interest rates in focus Ed Yardeni and Eric Wallerstein of Yradeni Research, said in their QuickTakes note that Fed Chair Jerome Powell&#8217;s basic message during his press conference was that the Fed is in no hurry to lower interest rates, but the Fed still intends to lower them over time.
Hence, they described it as a &#8220;dovish pause&#8221;.
Approaching the week from a technical perspective Jeff Buchbinder, the chief equity strategist at LPL Financial said that the S&amp;P 500 remains near record-high territory amid improving market breadth and momentum. &#8220;Technical damage within the heavy-weight tech sector has been minimal as buyers stepped up near support from the mid-January lows.&#8221;
Despite Monday's pullback, sector breadth is also holding up relatively well, with the majority of tech stocks trading above their 200-day moving average, Buchbinder added.
&#8220;However, technical damage has been more pronounced on a relative basis, as the tech sector vs. S&amp;P 500 ratio chart recently dropped to multi-month lows,&#8221; he said.

Exxon Mobil (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XOM#NYSE">XOM</a>) reported quarterly earnings of $1.67 per share which beat the analyst consensus estimate of $1.56 by 7.05 percent. This is a 32.66 percent decrease over earnings of $2.48 per share from the same period last year. The company reported quarterly sales of $83.426 billion which missed the analyst consensus estimate of $86.634 billion by 3.70 percent. This is a 1.09 percent decrease over sales of $84.344 billion the same period last year.

The iPhone maker reported first-quarter adjusted earnings of $2.40 per share, beating analyst estimates of $2.36 per share. However, sales of its iPhone handset device declined to $69.14 billion from $69.70 billion in the year-ago period. Apple shares gained 3% to $244.79 in the after-hours trading session.</li>

Apple, Exxon Mobil And 3 Stocks To Watch Heading Into Friday

The CNN Money Fear and Greed index showed some improvement in the overall market sentiment, while the index remained in the &#8220;Neutral&#8221; zone on Thursday.
U.S. stocks settled higher on Thursday, with the Dow Jones index gaining more than 150 points as investors assessed the recent earnings reports from mega-cap tech stocks.
Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) reported weaker-than-expected fourth-quarter earnings and sales results. The company, meanwhile, said it expects its vehicle business to return to growth in 2025. Meta Platforms Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/META#NASDAQ">META</a>) reported better-than-expected fourth-quarter sales results on Wednesday. Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MSFT#NASDAQ">MSFT</a>) reported its second-quarter GAAP earnings of $3.23 per share, beating the $3.11 consensus estimate.
President Donald Trump confirmed Thursday the United States will impose 25% tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico starting Saturday, Feb. 1.
On the economic data front, U.S. initial jobless claims fell by 16,000 from the previous week to 207,000 in the week ending January 25, compared to market estimates of 220,000. The U.S. economy expanded at an annualized rate of 2.3% in the fourth quarter, down from 3.1% in the previous quarter and versus market estimates of 2.6%.
Most sectors on the S&amp;P 500 closed on a positive note, with utilities, real estate and health care stocks recording gains on Thursday. However, information technology stocks bucked the overall market trend, closing the session lower.
The Dow Jones closed higher by around 169 points to 44,882.13 on Thursday. The S&amp;P 500 rose 0.53% to 6,071.17, while the Nasdaq Composite rose 0.25% at 19,681.75 during Thursday's session.
Investors are awaiting earnings results from Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XOM#NYSE">XOM</a>), Chevron Corporation (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CVX#NYSE">CVX</a>) and Phillips 66 (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PSX#NYSE">PSX</a>) today.
At a current reading of 48.1, the index remained in the &#8220;Neutral&#8221; zone on Thursday, versus a prior reading of 46.5.
