Market Share Isn't Everything; Samsung's Mobile Biz Revenue Is Half Of Apple's

Smartphone fans and investors are gearing up for an epic battle between
Apple Inc.
(NASDAQ:
AAPL
)'s
iPhone 8
and Samsung's new flagship phone, the
Galaxy S8.

Samsung will showcase its new phone at a special event on March 29 and there is a lot riding on Samsung's shoulders. For starters, the company's reputation for offering high-end phones to rival iPhones was shattered last year after it was forced to discontinue its Note 7 due to a faulty battery.

Needless to say, to win back Samsung's once die-hard loyalists, the company needs its Galaxy S8 to be a "grand slam."

But here is where the Samsung versus Apple becomes complicated. As noted by Statista, although Samsung has fallen behind Apple in terms of mobile device sales recently, the South Korea-based company is still No. 1 in the smartphone market based on unit sales.

However, when switching over to revenue, Samsung falls well short of Apple to the point where Samsung's entire mobile business is half the size of Apple's.

For example, in 2016, Samsung's mobile business collected $80.9 billion in revenue versus Apple (both iPhone and iPad), which collected $158.5 billion in revenue.

Here is a summary of Samsung versus Apple's revenue base going back to 2012, courtesy of Statista's data:

  • 2012: Samsung - $95.4 billion versus Apple's $118.3 billion.
  • 2013: Samsung - $128.2 billion versus Apple's $125.9 billion.
  • 2014: Samsung - $98.4 billion versus Apple's $148.5 billion.
  • 2015: Samsung - $85.4 billion versus Apple's $176.8 billion.
