If this article from
Boy Genius Report is true, it could be game over for Google's (NASDAQ:
GOOG) Android operating system.
There are rumors that Apple (NASDAQ:
AAPL) will be releasing unlocked versions of its iPhone 4 directly to consumers. An unlocked version means it has no contract, and can go to any carrier that customers wish. An unlocked iPhone will probably be sold at full retail price, meaning that a few customers will be able to purchase the phone without a subsidy, but this is additional revenue for the Cupertino-based company. If this goes better than expected, then Apple can be expected to release more versions of unlocked iPhones in the future, which could significantly eat into Android's lead.
The models supposedly being released are the 16GB white and black versions, as well as the 32GB versions.
Shares of Apple are up in pre-market trading.
