Stocks turn higher after new report shows sales of new homes rise, but Greece debt problem looms

A second straight upbeat home sales report is giving stocks a lift.

The Commerce Department says Friday that sales of new homes jumped 27 percent in March, a month after hitting record lows. Stocks got a boost a day earlier after a better-than-expected report on existing home sales.

Shares of homebuilders are climbing on the upbeat reports.

Stocks had been mixed earlier in the morning as investors tried to balance easing concerns about Greece’s debt problems with some mixed earnings reports.

The Dow Jones industrial average is up 28.57, or 0.3 percent, at 11,162.86. The Standard & Poor’s 500 index is up 2.47, or 0.2 percent, at 1,211.14, while the Nasdaq composite index is up 3.23, or 0.1 percent, at 2,522.30.
