Elon Musk reacted to an old comment made by Jane Goodall regarding the human population on Wednesday.
The statement was made at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland in January 2020.
In the video shared by a Twitter user, the primate expert can be heard saying, “We cannot hide away from human population growth because it underlies so many of the other problems.”
“All these things we talk about wouldn’t be a problem if there was the size of the population that there was 500 years ago.”
The Twitter CEO responded to the video by saying, “This philosophy is the death of humanity.”

Why It Matters: Goodall has made similar arguments for years. Earlier, excerpts of the World Economic Forum video have been used to spread misinformation on COVID-19, according to PolitiFact.
Earlier in the video, she addressed how improving women’s education leads to a drop in family size and it was the growing human population that was destroying forests in Tanzania.
Musk has repeatedly warned of population collapse and has said that humans “are absurdly concentrated on a tiny percentage of Earth’s surface.”
He cited population collapse due to low birth rates as a “much bigger risk” to Civilization than global warming and said that “If the alarming collapse in birth rate continues, civilization will indeed die with a whimper in adult diapers.”
