GM, Ford EV Vehicles Called Out by US Transport Safety Watchdog for Road Safety Issues

  • National Transportation Safety Board Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy flagged concerns about the higher risk of severe injury and death for all road users from heavier curb weights and increasing size, power, and performance of vehicles on roads, including electric vehicles.
  • Homendy called out the General Motors Co GM GMC Hummer EV weighing over 9,000 pounds with a gross vehicle weight rating of 10,550 pounds
  • The battery pack alone weighs more than 2,900 pounds, about the weight of a Honda Motor Company, Ltd HMC Honda Civic
  • Homendy also mentioned Ford Motor Co F Ford F-150 Lightning being 2,000 - 3,000 pounds bulkier than the non-electric version. 
  • Ford's Mustang Mach-EVolvo AB VOLVF Volvo XC40 EV, and Toyota Motor Corp TM RAV4 EV were all roughly 33% heavier, leaving a significant impact on safety for all road users, Homendy said.
  • Homendy hailed the government's support to reduce emissions via clean energy vehicles but warned that it should not be at the cost of road accidents and deaths.
  • Price Action: GM shares were down 0.32% at $37.70 premarket on the last check Thursday.
