Elon Musk Sparks Debate On Generative AI And Adult Content With Grim Reaper Meme

Twitter and Tesla Inc. TSLA CEO Elon Musk was once concerned about the future of artificial intelligence. He then became utterly passionate about this technology. But now it appears he is again on the crusade of sharing memes about AI and its adverse effects.

What Happened: On Wednesday, Musk shared a meme with his 131.4 million followers on Twitter featuring a grim reaper knocking on doors like Home Video, the Internet and generative AI.

The meme in question isn’t targeting AI in particular but, in fact, it focuses on how adult content has evolved over the period. However, it does appear to highlight how AI and deepfake technology can encourage inappropriate adult content.

Here’s how people reacted:

Why It’s Important: Over the last few weeks, several users on social media platforms like Meta Platforms Inc.‘s META Facebook came across ads for a deepfake app that shows "Harry Potter" fame Emma Watson‘s face being swapped onto a suggestive video.

Some female Twitch streamers also shared similar issues and said they felt violated.

In May last year, Musk himself was subjected to a deepfake video when an AI version of himself was seen promoting a cryptocurrency scam.

Musk co-founded OpenAI, the startup that created ChatGPT. He left the organization in 2018 over some disagreements. Last week, he criticized OpenAI’s ChatGPT as being too “woke.”

Musk has also been critical of OpenAI’s evolution. Previously he said it was created to serve as a “counterweight to Google” but has become a “closed source, maximum-profit company effectively controlled by Microsoft.”
